Church Planters Commissioned for Mission Work in Freetown and the North
The Rt. Rev. Thomas A. I. Wilson, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Freetown including the North, on Sunday, 24th May 2026, commissioned a new batch of church planters during a special service held at St. John Anglican Church, Brookfields.
The commissioning ceremony followed the successful “Healthy Church Training” organised by the Diocese in partnership with Anglican Missions Africa from 6th to 10th May 2026. The training equipped participants with practical knowledge and spiritual guidance for effective evangelism, discipleship, and church planting ministry.
During the service, eight group leaders signed a commitment agreement on behalf of their respective teams, pledging themselves to plant one or two churches in their identified communities, as agreed during the training sessions. The commitment demonstrates the Diocese’s renewed vision for evangelism and church expansion across Freetown and the Northern regions of Sierra Leone.
In his charge to the church planters, Bishop Wilson encouraged them to remain faithful to the Great Commission and to serve with humility, commitment, and dependence on God. He further prayed for God’s guidance, protection, and empowerment upon their ministry journey.
The commissioning service was witnessed by the Very Rev. Elkana Thomas, Dean of the Cathedral Church of St. George, and the Venerable Samuel Fortunatus King, Archdeacon of Freetown, alongside clergy, church leaders, and members of the congregation.
As part of the commissioning exercise, the church planters received ministry, teaching, and training materials to guide their mission work in the communities.
The Diocese expressed confidence that the newly commissioned church planters would contribute significantly to the spread of the Gospel and the establishment of eleven (11) healthy Anglican congregations throughout Freetown, the Peninsular, and the Northern Archdeaconry.
