National Union of Muslim Students (NUMS) Elects New President from EBK University EBKUST
By: Alhaji Mohamed Wusha-Conteh
The National Union of Muslim Students (NUMS) has successfully elected a new National President, with this year’s leadership emerging from the University of Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology Makeni (EBKUST). The announcement was made following a highly organized and transparent electoral process, co-facilitated by members of the NUMS Alumni Representatives.
The election held over the weekend, brought together representatives from Muslim students in the various universities campuses nationwide and the process was praised for its openness, fairness, and the active participation it encourages among student members.
The newly elected president, Ibrahim Sorie M. A. Kamara, from the EBKUST, expressed deep gratitude to the students for their trust and vowed to promote unity, development, and spiritual growth among Muslim students in various campuses across the country.
In a joint statement, members of the NUMS Electoral Committee and Alumni Association noted that the election was a testament to the maturity and democratic values within the union. “This was not just an election; it was a celebration of leadership potential, inclusivity, and the bright future of Muslim youth in Sierra Leone,” said Dr. Imam Kalokoh.
Many current NUMS members echoed that sentiment. "For the first time in recent memory, students from every corner of the country had a voice in selecting their leaders,” said Fatmata Ruth Bangura, Lady President IPAM. “It’s not just about who won — it's about how we all participated in a system that respected our voices.”
What stood out this year was the deliberate inclusiveness of the newly formed executive. Students from all major public and private universities, including Fourah Bay College, IPAM, COMAHS, Freetown Polytechnic, Njala University, Ernest Bai Koroma University, and Limkokwing University, secured positions in the executive. This diverse representation is expected to bring balance and fresh perspectives to the leadership.

*‼️OFFICE OF THE NATIONAL CHIEF IMAM, NUMS-SL‼️*

*Subject: Embracing the Virtues of Sha'ban: A Call to Increase Worship and Sunnah Fasting*

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the noble Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his family, companions, and all those who follow his guidance.

As we have entered the blessed month of Sha'ban, I extend this message of encouragement to all Muslim students and the wider Muslim community to recognize its immense virtues and seize the opportunity to increase in acts of worship, especially Sunnah fasting.

*Sha'ban is a month of spiritual preparation for Ramadan* and a time when our deeds are presented before Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasized its significance and encouraged fasting during this period.

Evidence from the Sunnah
It was narrated by Aisha

"I never saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) complete a full month of fasting except in Ramadan, and I never saw him fast more in any month than he did in Sha'ban."
(Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Furthermore, Usama ibn Zaid (رضي الله عنه) reported:

"I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting any month as much as Sha'ban.’ He said, ‘That is a month to which people do not pay much attention, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which deeds are presented to the Lord of the Worlds, and I like that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.’"
(Reported by An-Nasa’i and Ahmad, authenticated by Al-Albani)

This hadith highlights the spiritual significance of Sha'ban and the Prophet's desire to be in a state of fasting when his deeds were presented before Allah.

*Encouragement to Fast and Increase in Worship*

In addition to fasting, we are encouraged to engage in other acts of worship, such as:

◾Recitation of the Qur’an
◾Seeking forgiveness (Istighfar)
◾Giving charity (Sadaqah)
◾Performing extra prayers (Nafl Salah)

The Prophet (ﷺ) also reminded us of the blessings of good deeds in this sacred time:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَابْتَغُوا إِلَيْهِ الْوَسِيلَةَ وَجَاهِدُوا فِي سَبِيلِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
(المائدة: ٣٥)

"O you who have believed, fear Allah and seek the means (of nearness) to Him and strive in His cause that you may succeed."
(Surah Al-Ma'idah: 35)

*Final Words of Encouragement*

As Muslim students, we must use this month wisely to strengthen our connection with Allah and develop the discipline needed for Ramadan. Let us follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) by increasing our fasting and righteous deeds, ensuring that we enter Ramadan spiritually prepared and closer to Allah.

May Allah grant us the ability to take full advantage of this blessed month, accept our fasting and good deeds, and allow us to witness Ramadan with renewed faith and sincerity🤲🤲
