With support from Christian Aid Sierra Leone, The Inter-Religious Council of Sierra held a one-day national workshop focused on strengthening the role of religious leaders and faith actors in promoting gender equality and women’s economic rights through faith-based messages and community engagement. The workshop brought together Christian and Muslim faith leaders, government actors, youth, and women from across the country.
Sessions explored gender equality and equity, women’s rights in religious contexts, and systemic barriers limiting women’s economic empowerment. Participants also examined the powerful role of faith leaders in shaping attitudes and behaviors, engaged in practical sermon and message development, and held group discussions on economic challenges faced by women and faith-based responses to close existing gaps.
Together, we reaffirmed faith leadership as a catalyst for justice, dignity, and economic inclusion for women.

Vehicle Handed Over to Inter‑Religious Council to Support Peacebuilding Efforts

Freetown, Sierra Leone —5 August 2025

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen peacebuilding, national unity, and good governance across Sierra Leone, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Minister, officially handed over a vehicle to the Inter‑Religious Council (IRC).

The handover ceremony, held today, marks a significant step in enhancing the operational capacity of the IRC to reach more communities, amplify diverse voices, and support inclusive dialogue at the grassroots level. The provision of this vehicle will enable the Council to increase its mobility across districts, expanding its ability to engage citizens in peace advocacy and conflict resolution initiatives.

Speaking at the event, representatives from UNDP Sierra Leone reiterated their commitment to supporting national institutions that promote peace and social cohesion. They emphasized that sustainable peace requires consistent engagement, accessibility, and the active inclusion of all communities in dialogue processes.

The Office of the Chief Minister welcomed the support, noting that the vehicle will be instrumental in bridging communication gaps and reinforcing government efforts to ensure nationwide stability through partnerships with civil society actors like the Inter‑Religious Council.

The Inter‑Religious Council expressed gratitude for the support and pledged to intensify its work in communities to promote religious tolerance, dialogue, and national harmony.

This intervention is part of UNDP’s broader strategy to strengthen peace infrastructure in Sierra Leone by supporting key partners and institutions at national and local levels.

PRESS RELEASE

The events of yesterday 26th November 2023, in which unidentified and unauthorized persons broke into the armory at the Wilberforce barracks, carting away unspecified number of weapons and the related incident of breaking into the Male Correctional Centre at Pademba Road, with the resulting release of some inmates is of grave concern to the Inter-Religious Council Sierra Leone.

Such events are a direct challenge to our ongoing national peace building efforts, with potential to derail our democratic process. The Inter- Religious Council Sierra Leone condemns such acts of violence and the usual ensuing loss of life, including that of innocent citizens.

It is therefore our hope that those responsible for those acts would be arrested and given fair and speedy trial according to law.

In the meantime, the Inter-Religious Council assures the Government and people of Sierra Leone of their fervent prayers for peace and stability in our country.

Statement by the President of the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone

My dear brothers and sisters

On behalf of the Interreligious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL), and on my own behalf as its President, I would like to convey to you our warmest greetings and sincere wishes for continued peace, unity and prosperity.

I would also like to praise and appreciate the Almighty God/Allah for the abundant blessings and favors he has bestowed on us as a country and as a people, and we pray that he will continue to guide and protect us.

My dear brothers and sisters
As you may be aware IRCSL was founded by our foresighted religious leaders and other eminent national stakeholders at the height of the devastating and horrible civil war some 27 years ago in 1997.

Their noble objective was to find a holistic, comprehensive, and enduring solution for our nation.
Once again, we are being challenged to consolidate the peace and strengthen our national unity and social cohesion.

The IRCSL has been working relentlessly, before, during, and after the June 24 general elections with various election management bodies, national and international stakeholders, and partners to safeguard national peace and unity in the country.

The Council is pleased to note that, with the exception of some reported incidents of politically-related violence, hate speech, the overall situation of the electioneering process was relatively peaceful, free and fair.

However, the IRCSL wishes to note that certain grievances and complaints have been made during the electioneering process with regard to issues of transparency and accountability, victimization of political opponents, loss of lives and destruction of properties which are currently under discussion in order to find amicable solutions.

While active engagements have been initiated with key stakeholders to resolve all outstanding issues related to the electioneering process, the IRCSL would like to kindly appeal to all of us to be peaceful, compassionate and law-abiding.

Our nation's resolve and commitment to safeguard the peace, unity and social cohesion is been tested again and we cannot afford to betray our spiritual believes and traditional values of friendship, good neighborliness, and compassion which constitute the real assets of our nation.

I want to thank you all for your attention.
I pray that God/Allah may bless our nation.

Signed

Most Rev Dr. Edward Tamba Charles
