The Baghdadi Builders of Singapore tells the inspiring story of a small but influential community whose contributions helped build modern Singapore and enrich its multicultural heritage.

A big thank you to Geraldine GJ for taking the time to cover this important topic. We truly appreciate the effort you've put into sharing your knowledge and helping others learn about the local Jewish communityโ€™s history.

Keep up the great work!

Today, we celebrate Racial Harmony Day โ€” a reminder that Singapore's strength lies in our diversity.

Our different cultures, languages, traditions, and beliefs make our community richer and stronger. By showing kindness, respect, and understanding every day, we continue to build a society where everyone feels they belong.

Let's cherish our shared values, embrace our differences, and work together to keep the spirit of harmony aliveโ€”not just today, but every day.

Happy Racial Harmony Day! โค๏ธ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ

Harmony Fest 2026 celebrates Singaporeโ€™s rich multicultural and multi-faith tapestry, bringing communities together to foster understanding, respect, and meaningful connections. We were delighted to be part of this celebration and to share the beauty of the Jewish faith, artefacts, traditions, and heritage with visitors. Through collaborating with the MCCY in developing a booth to represent Judaism, introducing Jewish values, and the important milestones that shape Jewish life cycles โ€” from celebrations and customs to the practices that connect generations.

Even though we were not able to be there on the day due to sabbath observance, our heartfelt thanks to our partners at Harmony Circles and of Culture, Community and Youth - MCCY for making this Harmony Fest a meaningful platform for interfaith exchange and community harmony possible and hope to be able to participate again in the future.

Earlier today, at 24 Waterloo Street, the heart of Jewish life in Singapore and home to the Maghain Aboth Synagogue and Jacob Ballas Centre, the Jewish Community of Singapore gathered to bid farewell to a dear friend and loyal guardian of the community, Karunahkaran S/O Sinniah Pillai.

Rabbi Mordecai Abergel offered words of remembrance and blessing as members of Singaporeโ€™s Jewish Welfare Board and the wider community gathered to pay their respects. Karuโ€™s casket was brought to Waterloo Street, where his family spoke movingly of his deep love and lifelong devotion to the community he served so faithfully.

For close to 70 years, Karu, and his late father Sinniah before him, were part of the fabric of our community grounds, helping generations of Singaporean Jewish families and countless visitors preserve our dietary laws while extending warmth, dignity, and hospitality to all.

In sorrow, we also reflect on the longstanding friendship and mutual respect between the Jewish and Hindu communities in Singapore, a bond built over generations through service, trust, and shared humanity.

It highlights missed chances to step in and the subtle warning signs of self-radicalisation that went unnoticed.

Its message is clear: anyone can be vulnerable, and early reporting can make a difference in getting help in time.

Catch the film on MHAโ€™s YouTube channel, and look out for it at community events, schools, and engagement sessions happening across Singapore.

At the RRG Iftar event on 23 Feb, Minister Shanmugam Shanmugam Sc reminded us that โ€œSingapore remains a small oasis of peace in an uncertain world, peace we must cherish and protect together.โ€ He also affirmed that โ€œWhatever happens externally in the world, we try not to bring those problems in here.โ€

Rabbi Mordechai Abergel, Chief Rabbi of Singapore, who gave his speech for the RRG Iftar event via a recorded video as he was overseas, echoed the Ministerโ€™s message of shared responsibility, saying, โ€œIt is up to us and our communities to protect and maintain the delicate fabric of our unique society, a role model of religious tolerance and respect throughout the world.โ€ Rabbi Abergel also condemned the October 7 terror attack against Israel by Hamas, as well as the loss of innocent Palestinian lives in the conflict that followed.

The Jewish community has been privileged to call Singapore home since 1830. Leaders such as Sir Manasseh Meyer, David Marshall, Singaporeโ€™s first Chief Minister, and Jacob Ballas, prominent stockbroker and philanthropist, contributed meaningfully to our nationโ€™s development. Together with fellow Singaporeans of all faiths, we remain committed to building a secular, harmonious, and pluralistic society where diversity strengthens us and peace endures.
