The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart invites us to contemplate the inexhaustible love of Christ. In His Heart we discover the tenderness of God and the strength to keep giving of ourselves, even when life feels overwhelming. To gaze upon His Heart is to be reminded that our capacity to love does not come from our own strength, but from His divine love poured into us, so that we too may love with patience, mercy, and fidelity.

FINDING THE CAPACITY TO LOVE LIKE JESUS The Gospel today is consoling to all of us without exception. All of us feel the weight and burden of life and its responsibilities.

St Barnabas shows us that true synodal leadership is rooted in humility, collaboration, and encouragement. He did not seek power for himself, but empowered others, listened to the Spirit, and placed the preaching of the Gospel above personal credit. His example reminds us that good leaders journey with their people and build up the community together.

A SYNODAL LEADER In the Church today, we are seeking leaders to be synodal in practice. Gone are the days when leaders acted in an authoritarian way, dictating what they wanted done.

Each day we are faced with choices, and the most important is whether we will live for God or for ourselves. Elijah’s challenge still echoes: if the Lord is truly God, then follow Him wholeheartedly. True discipleship is not lip service but obedience from the heart. Ultimately, embracing God’s commandments is not a restriction of our freedom, but a deliberate decision that leads to authentic liberty, lasting joy, and union with His divine will.

THE CHOICE WE HAVE TO MAKE In today’s First Reading, Elijah, who was passionate about preserving Israel’s covenant with Yahweh, reprimanded the people for being ambivalent in their faith.

Many people call themselves Christians, yet the Gospel reminds us that true discipleship is more than a name - it is a way of life shaped by the Beatitudes. To be poor in spirit, merciful, pure of heart, and meek is not weakness but the very strength of God’s kingdom at work in us. When we live this blessed life, we become salt that preserves goodness in society and light that reveals Christ’s presence in the world. Such witness is not about drawing attention to ourselves, but about letting the joy and truth of Christ shine through us so that others may be drawn to the Father.

IMPACTFUL CHRISTIANS IN THE WORLD There are Christians and then there are Christians. The truth is that whilst many may see themselves as “Christians,” there are vast differences in beliefs, interpretations, practices, devotions, and commitment.

In a world consumed by the false promises of power and pleasure, true happiness is found only by rejecting modern idolatry and anchoring our lives entirely in God. As modelled by the Beatitudes and the unwavering fidelity of the prophet Elijah, a blessed life requires total dependence on God, inner integrity, and a heart of compassionate service toward others. By firmly establishing God as our Lord, we gain the divine strength and peace necessary to live with authentic faith, even in the face of worldly opposition.

LIVING A BLESSED LIFE ENTAILS SERVING GOD AS OUR LORD All of us seek happiness in life, yet few of us have found it. Why?

We search for life in health, pleasure, and success, yet still feel empty. True life is not found in bread alone but in every word that comes from God, and most fully in Christ, who gives Himself to us in the Eucharist. To encounter Him is to discover the only food that satisfies, and the only love that endures.

DRAWING LIFE FROM THE WORD, THE EUCHARIST AND THE CHURCH We all want to live. But living goes beyond mere survival. If we are suffering because of poor health, we wish that God will take away our pain by shortening our life.

In a world that prioritises affirmation, recognition and honour, Jesus’ challenges us to examine our motives. Too often, the fear of rejection or desire for approval dilutes our witnessing, leaving the Gospel half‑spoken. Yet the call of Christ is clear: like St Paul and the widow who gave all she had, we are summoned to proclaim the truth boldly, welcome or unwelcome, trusting in God’s justice.

PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL, WELCOME OR UNWELCOME “Beware of the scribes that like to walk about in long robes, to be greeted obsequiously in the market squares, to take the front seats in the synagogue and the places of honour at banquets; these are the men that swallow the property of widows, while maki...
