The Mission was officially registered in 1965.

Founded in 1965, the Singapore Buddhist Youth Mission spreads the Dharma, inspires all, and serves the community through practice, education & culture.

Singapore Buddhist Youth Mission — Origin & Development

📍 1957 — Auspicious Beginnings

A miraculous fruiting of rambutan flowers at Bright Hill Temple was seen as a sacred omen, symbolizing Dharma flourishing and prosperity. This event drew countless devotees and sowed the karmic seed for the Mission’s founding.

🏯 1964–1966 — Founding the Mission

In 1964, Venerable Hong Chuan initiated the idea of forming a youth Dharma group. In 1966, the first general meeting was held at Bright Hill Temple, marking the official establishment.

🚐 1966–1972 — Three Relocations & Early Growth

1️⃣ First move (1966): from Bright Hill to Aljunied Rd 104D.
2️⃣ Second move (late 1966): to the 2nd floor of Poh Hai Chan Monastery, Geylang; membership grew to 800+.
3️⃣ Third move (1972): purchased 18 Hougang Fuan Rd for $110,000, officially opened in October 1972.

🛕 1970s–1980s — Propagation, Practice, Education

The Hougang premises became a vibrant platform for Dharma talks, sutra study, youth development, and community service, nurturing generations of Buddhist youths.

🏗️ 1984–1988 — Clementi New Premises

Due to regulations on private residential use, land at Clementi was purchased in 1984, groundbreaking in 1985, and the new premises completed in 1988—fulfilling the late President Chou’s aspiration.

🌿 1995–2005 — Hougang Branch Formation & Closure

The Hougang branch was registered in 1995 but ceased activities in 2005 due to neighbourhood and site issues.

🏗️ 1998–2002 — Expansion & Buddha Installation

Second-floor expansion started in 2000 and was completed in 2002. During the Buddha installation ceremony in 2001, a halo appeared in the sky—deeply inspiring devotees.

📌 Summary

From its auspicious beginnings in 1957, the Singapore Buddhist Youth Mission has grown through founding, relocations, self-building, expansion, and heritage transmission. It stands today as a vital platform for Dharma propagation, practice, education, and culture—carrying the Buddhist youth spirit for over half a century.

# # # Episode 20 | What Is Theravāda Buddhism?

---

Many people ask:

**“Is Theravāda Buddhism only found in Southeast Asia?”**

Theravāda is the Buddhist tradition mainly found today in:

**Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos.**

🌿 **Why is it sometimes called “Southern Buddhism”?**

Historically, Buddhism spread southward from India to Sri Lanka and later became deeply established across much of Southeast Asia.

📖 **What does Theravāda emphasize?**

Theravāda places strong emphasis on preserving early Buddhist scriptures and monastic discipline.

Common areas of practice include:

**morality, meditation, mindfulness, wisdom,
the Four Noble Truths, and the Noble Eightfold Path.**

🧘 **Is it only for monks?**

No.

Lay Buddhists also practise through:

**generosity, moral conduct, listening to the Dharma, meditation, and mindfulness.**

# # # Key Message

**Theravāda Buddhism is the major Buddhist tradition of Sri Lanka and much of Southeast Asia.**

It emphasizes early teachings, monastic discipline, meditation, and mindfulness.

Like other Buddhist traditions, its aim is to:

**reduce suffering, cultivate wisdom, and progress toward liberation.**

# # # Episode 19 | How Did Buddhism Spread from India to the World?

---

Many people ask:

**“If Buddhism began in India, how did it spread to so many countries?”**

Buddhism began in **ancient India**.

After attaining enlightenment, Shakyamuni Buddha spent more than forty years teaching people about suffering, cause and effect, and the cultivation of morality, concentration, and wisdom.

After the Buddha’s passing, his disciples continued to preserve the teachings, maintain the monastic community, and carry the Dharma to other regions.

🌏 **How did Buddhism spread?**

It happened gradually through:

**monastic teachers,
trade and travel,
royal support,
and cultural exchange.**

Around the third century BCE, **Emperor Ashoka** strongly supported Buddhism and sent missions to different regions, helping Buddhism spread beyond India.

Over time, Buddhism reached:

**Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, China, Tibet, Korea, Japan**, and many other places.

🪷 **Why does Buddhism look different in different countries?**

As Buddhism entered new cultures, it adapted to local languages, customs, art, and ways of life.

That is why rituals, robes, temples, and practices may look different.

But the core teachings remain connected to the Buddha’s Dharma.

# # # Key Message

**Buddhism began in India and gradually spread across Asia and the world through teaching, travel, royal support, and cultural exchange.**

Different traditions developed,
but they all trace their roots back to the Buddha’s teachings.

National Day Group Singing of The Song of the Triple Gem

On this special occasion celebrating Singapore’s National Day, everyone gathered together to sing the well-known Buddhist hymn, The Song of the Triple Gem.

The Song of the Triple Gem praises the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, reminding us to take refuge in the Triple Gem and to live with compassion, wisdom and purity.

Singing The Song of the Triple Gem on National Day was more than a solemn and heartwarming group performance. It also reflected how Buddhists, while practising the Dharma, continue to cherish our nation, our society and the land we all call home.

The Dharma teaches harmony, compassion and mutual respect. These values also resonate with Singapore’s spirit of racial and religious harmony.

As everyone sang The Song of the Triple Gem together, the moment became not only a tribute to the Triple Gem, but also a shared aspiration to bring greater kindness, inclusiveness, responsibility and peace into our society.

以佛法净化人心,以和合凝聚大众;

May the Dharma purify our hearts and harmony unite our community.
As we celebrate National Day, may Singapore continue to prosper and may its people live in peace and happiness.

# # # Episode 18 | Why Do Buddhists Circumambulate the Buddha?

---

Many people see Buddhists walking around a Buddha image, stupa, or shrine and ask:

**“Why do they keep walking around it?”**

Circumambulation is not simply walking in circles.

It is a practice of **respect, recollection, and mindfulness**.

🙏 **Why clockwise?**

Traditionally, Buddhists circumambulate clockwise, keeping the sacred object on their right side.

This developed from an ancient Indian gesture of respect.

🌿 **What can we do while walking?**

We may:

**recite the Buddha’s name,
chant a mantra,
reflect on the Buddha’s qualities,
or simply walk mindfully.**

The number of rounds is not the main point.

What matters is whether the practice helps the mind become calmer and more focused.

# # # Key Message

**Circumambulation uses our footsteps as a form of practice.**

Step by step, we cultivate respect, mindfulness, and a more settled mind.

# # # Episode 17 | Why Do Buddhists Chant Mantras?

---

Many people ask:

**“Are Buddhist mantras mysterious spells?”**

In Buddhism, mantra chanting is not simply about mysterious sounds.

It is a practice that helps us **focus the mind, cultivate mindfulness, and recollect the qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas**.

🙏 **Why chant mantras?**

The mind is easily distracted.

Repeating a mantra with focus can help us:

**reduce scattered thoughts,
calm emotions,
strengthen concentration,
and maintain mindfulness.**

🌿 **Must we understand every syllable?**

Understanding the meaning and background is helpful.

But even if we do not yet understand every syllable, we can still chant with sincerity and concentration.

The goal is not to chase “mystical power”, but to use the practice to become more steady, clear, and wholesome.

# # # Key Message

**Mantra chanting uses sound to gather the mind.**

What matters is not only how many times we chant, but whether we become:

**more focused,
more mindful,
more compassionate,
and more aware.**
