A CALL FOR MUTUAL RESPECT AND HARMONY IN SINGAPORE

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore is troubled to learn of recent acts of provocation against our Jewish community in Singapore.

We do not condone aggression or hostility, regardless of the issues at hand, and unequivocally reject all forms of hatred and violence.

Let us continue to actively work for a just society where every individual and community is respected and protected, for there can be no true peace without justice. In the face of challenges, we urge constructive dialogue, peaceful resolution, and reconciliation, with mutual respect as the foundation of our interactions.

Happy Deepavali to all Hindu friends in Singapore and in the rest of the world!

Dear Hindu friends, happy and blessed Deepavali!

May your celebrations commemorating good King Rama’s return from exile, after he defeated the evil Ravana, be filled with “dancing, music, and festive joy” – the theme of this year’s Light-up Aattam, Paattam, Kondattam.

The return of the dazzling and colourful Utsavam street parade after six years of absence truly attests to your community’s faith, hope, and resilience in prevailing over the darkness of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Deepavali festivities are gestures of fraternity, uniting all Singaporeans in celebrating the rich diversity and vibrancy of our multi-cultural society. It invites everyone to walk and work together in wisdom, compassion and commitment.

Thank you for sharing the gift of Deepavali with us – the Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore rejoices with you.

On October 18, Catholics and other Christians around the world celebrate the feast of St. Luke, the physician and companion of St. Paul whose gospel preserved the biography of Jesus Christ.

St. Luke wrote a greater volume of the New Testament than any other single author, including the earliest history of the Church. Ancient traditions also acknowledge Luke as the founder of Christian iconography, making him a patron of artists as well as doctors and other medical caregivers.

Luke came from the large metropolitan city of Antioch. In Luke's lifetime, his native city emerged as an important center of early Christianity.

Educated as a physician in the Greek-speaking city, Luke was among the most cultured and cosmopolitan members of the early Church. Scholars of archeology and ancient literature have ranked him among the top historians of his time period, besides noting the outstanding Greek prose style and technical accuracy of his accounts of Christ's life and the apostles' missionary journeys.

Other students of biblical history adduce from Luke's writings that he was the only evangelist to incorporate the personal testimony of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose role in Christ's life emerges most clearly in his gospel.

Some traditions hold that Luke became a direct disciple of Jesus before his ascension, while others hold that he became a believer only afterward. After St. Paul's conversion, Luke accompanied him as his personal physician-- and, in effect, as a kind of biographer, since the journeys of Paul on which Luke accompanied him occupy a large portion of the Acts of the Apostles. Luke probably wrote this text, the final narrative portion of the New Testament, in the city of Rome where the account ends.

Luke was also among the only companions of Paul who did not abandon him during his final imprisonment and death in Rome. After the martyrdom of St. Paul in the year 67, St. Luke is said to have preached elsewhere throughout the Mediterranean, and possibly died as a martyr.

Dear Buddhist friends,

This Vesak, as you renew your commitment to walking the Noble Eightfold Path to end suffering and achieve enlightenment through the practice of Right Understanding, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration, may you do so with steadfastness, courage and unwavering hope.

As Singapore celebrates SG60 this year, may our hearts be filled with gratitude for our founding leaders, and the Pioneer and Merdeka generations from our various faith communities who suffered side by side with dignity – and ultimately prevailed – to build the cohesive and close-knit multi-racial and multi-religious society we enjoy today.

In these uncertain and unsettling times, let us forge ahead together in determination, joy and hope to leave a lasting legacy of prosperity, peace and harmony for future generations of Singaporeans, and to be a shining example of unity and solidarity for the world.

On behalf of the Catholic community in Singapore, we wish you a happy and holy Vesak Day!

+William
