First Evangelical Reformed Church Holding forth the Word of Life (Philippians 2:16) Introduction
First Evangelical Reformed Church is a gathering of Christian believers.

Our members come from all walks of life. That which binds us together is our common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Evangelical
We are a gospel church. We confess that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation. Whoever confesses his sins to God and turns to Jesus Christ by a true faith will be saved. We publish this saving gospel to the lost world in preaching and in evangelism. Reformed
We stand

in the heritage of the Reformation of the 16th century. We confess the truths of sovereign and particular grace, meaning that it is God’s grace alone that powerfully regenerates a sinner, enabling him to repent and believe. What we believe is summarized in three historical Reformed creeds:

The Heidelberg Catechism
The Belgic Confession
The Canons of Dordt

These creeds have been the confessions of the Reformed Churches all over the world since the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century. A Reformed Church, like any faithful Christian Church, adheres to all the fundamental tenets of the Christian faith. We believe in the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus is very God and very Man. We believe that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. We believe the Bible to be our sole authority, and that it is inspired by God and is therefore without error. On top of this, a Reformed Church emphasizes the teaching of God’s sovereignty. We teach that God is sovereign in all that He plans and does. GOD IS SOVEREIGN IN CREATION AND PROVIDENCE
He spoke, and all things came into existence. By His power and wisdom, He continues to uphold and govern the world, and directs it according to His good purpose. He also rules over all creatures, including man, angels and the Devil so that all of their activities serve the kingdom of Jesus Christ. GOD IS SOVEREIGN IN SALVATION
The Bible teaches that man is dead spiritually. Because of this spiritual deadness, we have no power at all to exercise any faith in God. On the contrary, we constantly resist and oppose the things of God. Without God and resisting God, we have no hope of eternal life. But instead of leaving the whole world to perish in sin, God has chosen a people from eternity to be saved through the death of Jesus Christ. He regenerates their hearts through the Holy Spirit and gives them faith to believe in His Son. God continues this saving work until they finally arrive at His presence in heaven. We confess therefore that our salvation from beginning to end is a work of God’s sovereign grace. To God be the glory alone!

Mark 10:13-31, 45
Speaker: Pastor Jonathan Yap

True belonging in God's kingdom requires adopting the posture of a needy child. Instead of relying on self-sufficiency, pride, or worldly riches, believers are called to embrace a spirit of total dependence on Christ. Using the example of a rich man who struggled to surrender his possessions, the message highlights how idols can blind us to our spiritual condition. Ultimately, salvation is not earned through human effort but is a divine work of grace. By humbly receiving from God and supporting one another in faith, followers find a new, eternal security that transcends worldly loss.

Genesis 27-28
Speaker: Pastor Mark Chen

God is sovereign over our sin and steadfast in His love towards us.

Despite Jacob deceiving his father Isaac to bless him instead of Esau and fleeing in fear of his brother, God did not forsake him but called him back to seek forgiveness and continued to bless him as He had intended.

Mark 10:32-45
Speaker: Pastor Chong Nam Tuck

This sermon contrasts the worldly desire for status with the biblical definition of true greatness. While Jesus was earnestly preparing to bear the judgment of the cross, His disciples were distracted by prideful ambitions for power and recognition, and this sinful craving for self-exaltation plagues all human hearts today too. The antidote to this brokenness is the gospel: Jesus, the eternal God, modelled ultimate humility by coming not to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom to free us from the debt of sin. Consequently, true greatness in God's kingdom is not about how high we can climb, but how low we are willing to humble ourselves. Empowered by the Holy Spirit and motivated by profound gratitude for our unearned salvation, believers are called to reject self-promotion, embrace humility, and lovingly serve others, realizing that the Christian life is not about becoming greater, but becoming smaller so that Christ may be exalted.

Genesis 23-24
Speaker: Pastor Jonathan Yap

As Abraham neared the end of his journey, he faced two profound acts of faith — burying his beloved wife Sarah in a land not yet his, and securing a wife for Isaac from his own family. Neither act was small. Yet Abraham acted on God's promises without the hindsight we carry today — knowing how faithfully God fulfilled every word: a people as numerous as the stars, and a promised land secured eternally in His kingdom. May Abraham's example anchor your faith in the same God who presides over all.

Genesis 26
Speaker: Pastor Mark Chen

5 April 2026

Repeated sins are not a new phenomenon even for believers - we have a well-recorded intergenerational example with Isaac repeating the sins of Abraham. Yet God is gracious to preserve His covenant with Isaac and also us, not on the basis of our righteousness which has failed, but on the basis of the covenant of grace made with Abraham that we also enjoy today. Shall we look to Christ’s death and resurrection as our everlasting hope to walk this Christian life?

Bible text: Genesis 9:18-10:1
Speaker: Pastor Jonathan Yap

With the conclusion of the great flood, one may expect happily ever after, but in this sin-filled world there’s no fresh reset. Noah and his household then went on to sin and another set of blessings and curse were promulgated. Will we stop looking to men and instead look to a perfect Christ for our salvation?

Gen 3
Pastor Mark Chen

Before the first couple fell into sin, they felt no shame to appear naked. But married couples today also do not feel shameful. So, covering with fig leaves is symbolic to show mankind's alienation from God and from each other due to sin. Likewise, covering with a coat of skin is to show God's grace in providing the only way of salvation for mankind. Hear what this means today.

Evening Service

The legalist comes up with laws in a misplaced zeal for God, but they end up in moral dilemmas which violate the two basic commandments: love God and love neighbour. Are we ready to put away such mindsets for a simple trust in the Lord?

Ruth 1:16-2:23
Speaker: Pastor Jonathan Yap

Do you know kindness begets kindness?
God blessed Ruth for the kindness she had shown to Naomi by providentially leading her to reap in the fields of Boaz, who so reflected God’s kindness towards her that she found satisfaction in the covenant love of God in a foreign land.
Knowing God’s love and providence for us, we should not be afraid to sacrificially serve others with love and kindness, despite our own worries and cares, so that they might also know Him.
