Maundy Thursday
"I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another."
— John 13:34
=====================================
Today, on Maundy Thursday, the Church commemorates the Last Supper, a time of solemn reflection and prayer as we remember the events leading to Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum, a three-day period of deep meaning and significance for our Church.
The New Commandment:
----------------------------
The word "maundy" comes from the Latin word "mandatum," which means "commandment." At the Last Supper, Jesus gave His disciples a new commandment — to love one another as He had loved them. Like the disciples, we are called to spread God's unconditional love with those around us as followers of Christ.
The Washing of Feet:
----------------------
Jesus also demonstrated true servant leadership and humility when though their Lord and Master, He chose to wash the feet of His disciples, even the one whom He knew was to betray Him.
The Last Supper:
------------------
At the Last Supper, Jesus also broke bread and poured wine for His disciples, saying "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." He then took the cup of wine, saying "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood." This act of breaking bread and pouring wine has become for us a symbol of Jesus' perpetual presence.
The Agony in the Garden:
----------------------------
On Maundy Thursday, we also remember the Agony in the Garden, when Jesus prayed in anguish before His arrest and crucifixion. In His moment of agony, Jesus showed us the depth of His humanity and His willingness to do the will of His Father, even in the face of great suffering.
=====================================
As we reflect on Maundy Thursday and the events of the washing of feet, the Last Supper, and the Agony in the Garden, let us remember Jesus' final act of service and love, His commandment to love one another, and strive to follow His example by serving others and drawing closer to God.
