The Ten Courts of the Underworld, each ruled by a righteous judge, govern the karmic judgment of good and evil deeds within the six realms of reincarnation. After death, the deceased proceed through the ten courts in sequence, where each court examines specific transgressions and virtues. Based on their accumulated merits and offenses, the final court determines their rebirth. The judgment process is precise and just, reflecting the inescapable law of cause and effect — a solemn reminder for the living to cultivate goodness, respect the heavenly order, and guard the heart.

第一殿 · First Court

秦广王 · King Qinguang

掌管人间寿命生死。初步查验亡者一生善恶。善者可早日转生,恶者送往其他殿审判。

Governs the lifespan and death of humans. Conducts an initial examination of the deceased’s good and evil deeds throughout life. Those who are good may be reborn quickly; the wicked are sent to other courts for judgment.

第二殿 · Second Court

楚江王 · King Chujiang

审判伤害他人、欺压弱小等罪行。依罪业轻重接受惩戒。

Judges crimes such as harming others and oppressing the weak. Punishments are administered according to the severity of the karmic offenses.

第三殿 · Third Court

宋帝王 · King Songdi

审查忤逆父母、不敬长辈等行为。着重伦理道德方面的因果。

Examines acts of filial impiety and disrespect toward elders. Focuses on the karmic consequences related to ethics and morality.

第四殿 · Fourth Court

五官王 · King Wuguan

审判不孝、不义及违背良心之事。衡量亡者悔改之心。

依公平原则复核案件。不论贫富贵贱,一律平等审理。

决定亡者投生去处。依功过安排转世为人、天人或其他众生。掌管六道轮回的转生程序。

十殿阎君 ≠ 十八层地狱

两者是不同层面的概念,并非互斥,而是并存且分工明确。

The Ten Courts and the Eighteen Hells are not contradictory but rather complementary — each serves a distinct function within the underworld system.

一、十殿阎君:审判机构

功能:亡者过世后,依序经过十殿,由十位阎君审判一生善恶功过。

性质:类似司法系统中的法庭,决定亡者的罪业轻重与投生去向。

结果:判决后,轻罪者转生,重罪者送往地狱受刑。

1. The Ten Courts: Judicial Body

Function: After death, the deceased proceed through the ten courts, where the ten kings judge the good and evil deeds of their entire life.

Nature: Comparable to a court of law, determining the severity of karmic offenses and the destination of rebirth.

Outcome: Those with minor offenses may be reborn; those with severe offenses are sent to the hells for punishment.

二、十八层地狱:刑罚执行机构

功能:已判定有罪的亡者,被送往地狱接受刑罚。

性质:类似司法系统中的监狱与刑场,按罪业轻重、刑期长短,分别送入不同层级的受刑处所。

《王道》

中华文化常表述:不行霸道,行王道。
何谓王道?以什么内容称之王道?

“三横为天道、地道、人道,一竖贯通三道为王”——出自东汉《说文解字》对“王”字的解读,属儒家政治哲学的理想化阐释。

王道,就是以“贯通天地人三道”的智慧与德性来治理天下之道。

具体内容可分三层:

1. 天道:法自然,顺时势
王道不以强力扭曲规律,如春不废耕、秋不妄征。明君观天象、察四时,政令与自然节律相合,此为“法天”。

2. 地道:厚德载物,养民生
大地生长万物而不占为己有。王道重农桑、开财货之道,使百姓有恒产、有安居,如大地般承载众生,此为“法地”。

3. 人道:仁义为本,民心为根
不行威吓与诈术,而以教化、诚信、公正得民心。孟子云:“以力假仁者霸,以德行仁者王。”

不了解三道的内在融入,就不知道何为“王”,更行不了王道。
因为“王”不是权力的顶端,而是三才之道的枢纽点。一个人若只懂人道权谋,不通天地之理,最多是霸主;能贯通三道者,才是圣王。

故儒家讲“内圣外王”,道家讲“道法自然,而后王天下”——殊途同归。
这一竖,其实画的就是“道”本身。

【道要怎样修?】

道也者,不可须臾离也,可离非道也——道不能片刻离开,可离开便不是道。生活就是道,把日常生活做好,就是修道。

生活很复杂,不完全是善的,也有很坏的地方。罪恶都是从细微处来的,修道者一定要在许多细微处小心,不要让魔鬼钻进来。

【修道就是修德】

道是看不见的,但至公至正。德是道表现于外的,所以修道就是修德。什么是德?礼义廉耻是德,孝悌忠信也是德。必须实践,空口说话不会修德。持斋清口、减少杀孽、烧香念经、多行善事,都是自修之道,但必须身体力行、多立功德、宣扬正道,才是修道。修一分德,即进一分道。

【How Should the Way Be Cultivated?】

The Way cannot be left for an instant. What can be left is not the Way.

The Way cannot be separated from us even for a moment — if it can be left aside, it is not the true Way. Life itself is the Way. To live daily life well is to cultivate the Way.

Life is complex. It is not entirely good; there are also places of great evil. Sins and transgressions all arise from subtle, seemingly insignificant beginnings. Therefore, those who cultivate the Way must be mindful in these small matters, lest the devil find a way to enter.

【Cultivating the Way Is Cultivating Virtue】

The Way is invisible, yet it is utterly just and upright. Virtue is the outward manifestation of the Way. Therefore, to cultivate the Way is to cultivate Virtue.

What is Virtue?

· Propriety, righteousness, integrity, and a sense of shame — these are Virtue.
· Filial piety, fraternal respect, loyalty, and trustworthiness — these are also Virtue.

Virtue must be put into practice. Empty words alone will not cultivate Virtue.

Observing a vegetarian diet, purifying one’s speech, reducing the taking of life, burning incense, reciting scriptures, and performing good deeds — all these are means of self-cultivation. However, one must personally practice them, accumulate merit and virtue, and propagate the right path. Only then can it be called cultivating the Way.

For every measure of Virtue cultivated, one advances one measure further on the Way.

天道奥义 · 第五章 道与人

【白话简释】

人与道,本来是一体的。道从未离开人,是人自己离开道。道不远人,人自远道。

道没有形状,也没有固定的境界。人之所以觉得道遥不可及,是因为被身体、物欲、分别心所遮蔽。

身体是灵性的樊笼,也是罪惡的根源。但修行不是糟蹋身体,而是借这个身体去修,不为衣食住行所困。

一念善,就是道;一念恶,就是魔。善念上升,恶念下坠。道高一尺,魔高一丈,不是因为道弱,而是因为人心里恶念比善念更容易生起。

真正的长生,不是肉体不死,而是灵性永恒。不生不灭的,才是真道。

修行有三个要点:

第一,立信。信仰不立,精神散乱。

第二,定课。每日读经、反省、静默,不间断。

第三,发愿。发心济人救人,良知良能才能被真正唤醒。

修天道,不是离开人去做事,而是在人世间修。天道无私,只看你有没有德。有德者,道自来归。

【结语】

道不离人,人自离道。
一念善即道,一念恶即魔。
身体是樊笼,借假可修真。
长生非肉体,灵性本不生。
立信、定课、发愿,三者为修行之要。
天道无私,惟德是辅。
德若不修,道远人;
德若日进,人与道合。

Chapter Five: Tao and Human Beings

Human beings and Tao are originally one. Tao has never left human beings; it is people who have left Tao. Tao does not distance itself from people; people distance themselves from Tao.

Tao has no shape, nor any fixed realm. The reason a person feels Tao is impossibly far away is because they are obscured by the physical body, material desires, and the mind of discrimination.

The body is the cage of the spirit and also the root of evil. But cultivation does not mean abusing the body; rather, it means using this body to cultivate, without being trapped by clothing, food, shelter, and transportation.

One thought of goodness is Tao; one thought of evil is a demon. Good thoughts rise upward; evil thoughts sink downward. When Tao rises one foot, a demon rises ten feet. This is not because Tao is weak, but because evil thoughts arise more easily in the human mind than good thoughts.

True immortality is not the undying physical body, but the eternity of the spirit. That which is unborn and undying is the true Tao.

There are three essential points in cultivation:

First, establish faith. Without a firm faith, the spirit becomes scattered and confused.

Second, set a regular practice. Recite scriptures, reflect, and observe silence daily, without interruption.

Third, make a vow. Aspire to help and save others. Only then can innate conscience and innate capacity be truly awakened.

Cultivating Heavenly Tao does not mean leaving human society to practice; rather, it means cultivating within this human world. Heavenly Tao is impartial; it only looks at whether one has virtue. When virtue is present, Tao returns of its own accord.

Conclusion

Tao does not leave human beings; human beings leave Tao.
One good thought is Tao; one evil thought is a demon.
The body is a cage; through the illusory, one may cultivate the real.
Immortality is not the physical body; the spirit is unborn.
Faith, regular practice, and vow — these three are the essentials of cultivation.
Heavenly Tao is impartial; it only assists virtue.
If virtue is not cultivated, Tao distances itself from people.
If virtue advances daily, human beings and Tao become one.

尽人事
听天命
数兮易

【简释】

活佛示谕:修行者当尽心于人事,放下对结果的执着。数理本有变易,此乃天地自然之理,明白此义,自得心安。

“尽人事”
尽心尽力,做该做的事;所谓“尽”,非执着于固定范围,而是在人事无常的动态中,尽心而已。

“听天命”
尽了全力之后,放下对结果的执着,不怨不尤,顺其自然。须知“天命”有其先天因数,由此产生后天有相之引导。

“数兮易”
数理本有变易,无常是常。

“理然矣”
此乃天地自然之理,本该如此。

【结语】

所谓“尽人事”,非执着于固定范围,亦非以人力强求必成。世间人事,如流水行云,本无常住之形。尽心者,如舟子掌舵于波涛之中,不求浪静,但守其舵。

“听天命”者,非消极放任,乃知人力有限、天命有导。天命自有先天因数,由此在后天产生有相之引导,如舟行有航道,不迷方向。

数之变易,如潮汐之涨落,非人力可止;理之自然,如日月之升沉,非人意可改。明此,则尽心而无累,随缘而不堕,顺天命之导而不执。

此即“尽人事,听天命”之演道源义。

Exhaust human effort

Numbers are subject to change

【Simplified Explanation】

The Living Buddha proclaims: Practitioners should give their utmost to human affairs, yet let go of attachment to results. Numerical principles are by nature subject to change — this is the constant principle of Heaven and Earth. One who understands this finds peace of mind.

“Exhaust Human Effort”
Give your best and do what ought to be done. “Exhaust” does not mean clinging to fixed boundaries, but rather giving one’s utmost within the dynamic and impermanent flow of human affairs.

“Abide by the Will of Heaven”
After exerting full effort, let go of attachment to results — neither complain nor regret, but follow the natural course. One must understand that the “Will of Heaven” has its innate factors, which then manifest as phenomenal guidance in the latter sphere.

“Numbers Are Subject to Change”
Numerical principles are inherently changeable; impermanence is the constant.

“This Principle Is Indeed So”
This is the natural principle of Heaven and Earth; it is inherently right and proper.

【Conclusion】

To “exhaust human effort” does not mean clinging to fixed boundaries, nor forcing outcomes through sheer will. Human affairs are like flowing water and drifting clouds — they have no permanent form. One who gives their best is like a boatman steering through stormy waves: he does not demand the waves to subside, but simply holds the rudder steady.

To “abide by the will of Heaven” is not passive resignation, but the recognition that human power is limited and that Heaven’s guidance is ever present. The Will of Heaven has its innate factors, which manifest in the phenomenal world as guiding signs — just as a boat follows the channel, never losing its direction.

The transformation of numbers is like the rise and fall of tides — beyond human control. The natural principle is like the rising and setting of the sun and moon — beyond human intention. Understand this, and you shall give your best without burden, follow conditions without falling astray, and follow Heaven’s guidance without attachment.

This is the illustrated meaning of “Exhaust Human Effort and Abide by the Will of Heaven.”

【薪】尽烟消岂忍看
【火】微不续道将残
【相】携莫谓无轻重
【传】德千钧众肩担

——本济公活佛是

【简释】
活佛以藏头“薪火相传”示谕,寄望德教理念与德业世代延续,永不熄灭。

【薪】尽烟消岂忍看
传承之薪若断,道脉将坠入烟消般的黑暗。门生及修道人,岂能忍心坐视?

【火】微不续道将残
火势渐微,若不续燃,道必衰残。

【相】携莫言无轻重
同德携手行道,莫因偏执己见,不分轻重而行。

【传】德千钧教务担
传承德教,重任逾千钧,教务需众人共担。

【结语】
活佛示谕:薪火一断,道脉将陷于烟消之暗,焉能坐视?火微如缕,续之则生;传德千钧,愿诸门生,明辨轻重,同心荷担,使德教薪火,代代不熄。

【English Explanation】

By employing the hidden initial phrase "Passing the Torch," the Living Buddha conveys his divine instruction: May the core teachings and virtuous mission of De Jiao be transmitted from generation to generation, never ceasing.

When the fuel is exhausted and the smoke fades, how could one bear to watch?
If the torch of transmission is broken, the path of Dao will fall into a darkness akin to vanishing smoke. How could disciples and cultivators bear to stand by indifferently?

If the dwindling flame is not sustained, the Dao will surely wither.
Though the flame is weak, if it is not replenished, the Dao will inevitably decay and decline.

Walk together, but do not act without discerning what is weighty and what is light.
Fellow practitioners of virtue should advance side by side. Do not act stubbornly based on partial or biased views, disregarding the proper order of importance.

The thousand-jun weight of transmitting virtue rests on the shoulders of congregational affairs.
The sacred duty of perpetuating De Jiao is heavier than a thousand jun (an ancient unit of weight). The responsibility for congregational affairs must be borne by all together.

【结语 / Conclusion】

The Living Buddha instructs: Once the torch is broken, the Dao lineage will fall into the darkness of oblivion. How could you stand by and watch? Though the flame is as thin as a silk thread, tending it will bring it back to life. The transmission of virtue weighs a thousand jun. May all disciples discern clearly between the weighty and the light, and shoulder the burden with one heart, so that the torch of De Jiao may pass from generation to generation, never to be extinguished.

In these four lines, the Living Buddha Ji Gong employs a double acrostic — the first characters read “Zheng Jue Kai Zhi” (Right Awakening Opens Wisdom), and the third characters read “Zi Jing Bing Wu” (Purple Scripture, Year Bing Wu) — instructing that one should observe the karmic circumstances and conceptual transformations of Zi Jing Ge in the Year of Bing Wu through the dimension of Right Awakening and the opening of wisdom.

【Zheng】·【Zi】
Through the dimension of “Right Awakening Opens Wisdom,” observe the karmic encounters and sacred mission of Zi Jing Ge.

【Jue】·【Jing】
Awaken to the causes and consequences surrounding the founding of Zi Jing Ge; understand its historical context, as well as the vow made by the former worthies of Zi Jing Ge before Xie Tian Ge — the celestial institution that governs all Dejiao societies in the human realm — to establish Dejiao for the salvation of the world.

【Kai】·【Bing】
The transformation of the fire hexagram in the Year of Bing Wu marks the very beginning of change and renewal for Zi Jing Ge.

【Zhi】·【Wu】
The election of trustees in the Year of Bing Wu, through which those with karmic affinity are chosen to carry forth the mission, is itself the embodiment of the spiritual dimension of “Right Awakening Opens Wisdom.”

【Conclusion】

The Living Buddha Ji Gong proclaims: In the Year of Bing Wu, Zi Jing Ge must take Right Awakening and the opening of wisdom as the foundation of practice, observe the changes of karmic conditions, understand the vow made by former worthies before Xie Tian Ge, respond to the transformation of the fire hexagram, and elect those destined trustees who shall bear the sacred mission. Only thus can the legacy be carried forward and the torch of Dejiao’s salvation be transmitted without interruption.

【救】世何论问
【世】溺一念诚
【使】命传薪火
【命】传是方舟
—— 本济公活佛是

【救世使命】

藏头“救世使命”,活佛示修行者当以普度众生、护持正法为己任。

These four lines form an acrostic reading “Jiu Shi Shi Ming” — meaning “The Mission to Save the World” — in which Ji Gong Living Buddha instructs practitioners to take as their own duty the universal salvation of all beings and the upholding of the right Dharma.

【救】世何论问
救世何须议论?不问如何,不问为何。护持正法,即是本分。

【Jiu】 To save the world, why engage in debate?
No need to ask how, no need to ask why. Upholding the right Dharma is itself one’s sacred duty.

【世】溺一念诚
世溺苦海,一念真诚,便是弘愿。

【Shi】 The world drowns — a single thought of sincerity
The world sinks in the sea of suffering; a single thought of genuine sincerity is itself the great vow.

【使】命传薪火
怀使命感者,方能薪火相传。

【Shi】 The mission is to pass on the torch
Only those who carry the sense of sacred mission can transmit the torch from generation to generation.

【命】传是方舟
使命所传,即是方舟。

【Ming】 The transmission is the ark
That which the mission transmits is itself the vessel of salvation.

【结语 / Conclusion】

救世无须多问,唯以一念真诚,行普度之愿。使命在身,薪火不断;使命所至,方舟济世。

To save the world, there is no need for excessive questioning. Only with a single thought of sincere devotion can one carry out the great vow of universal salvation. When the mission is within, the torch burns unbroken; wherever the mission reaches, the ark ferries beings across the sea of suffering.
