Montfort Brothers of Saint Gabriel - Singapore

Montfort Brothers of Saint Gabriel - Singapore Proclaiming the reign of Jesus through Mary in SINGAPORE since 1936. Ad Iesum per Mariam! The Institute became a pontifical congregation in 1910.

Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort, a Missionary, lived in France, during the 18th Century. From the very beginning of his evangelizing work among the common people, he felt called by the Holy Spirit to surround himself with disciples who should live the Gospel like him "in the footsteps of the Apostles". To join him in his apostolate, he gathered a few Brothers and asked them to share his way of li

fe, by the ties of obedience and poverty. At the moment of death, he entrusted them to the Divine Providence in order to carry on his work, particularly through "charitable schools". In 1722, the community settled at Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre, near the community of the Daughters of Wisdom governed by Marie Louise de Jésus. The Brothers lived with the Fathers making up the community of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. Besides teaching in charitable schools, the Brothers devoted themselves to the works of the missions and rendering material services. When Gabriel Deshayes became Superior of the Montfortian communities, in 1821, he gave a new impetus to the Brothers; stressing particularly the importance of the teaching profession. As early as 1824, more than 40 novices took their vows of Chastity, Poverty and Obedience. The rapid growth in the number of the teaching Brothers led him progressively to give them a separate organization and finally to constitute them into an autonomous Institute know as the Brothers of Christian Instruction of the Holy Spirit, which became independent after his death in 1841. From then onwards, the Institute, which was legally recognized in France in 1853 under the name of the Brothers of Christian Instruction of Saint Gabriel, spread throughout the country, assuming the charge of educating the children of the working classes and undertaking also the education of the deaf and the blind. At the end of the 19th century, the Brothers crossed the frontiers of France to establish themselves in Canada and in several countries of Europe. Today, their missionary activity extends to all the continents in a spirit of fidelity to the Church and to their origins.

Dear Friends,

This Lent, we are once again invited to share in Jesus' suffering in his Cross.

True wisdom is not to be found in the things of this world nor in the souls of those who live in comfort. It is none other than in the cross will we find Him.

Jesus Christ, the Wisdom incarnate, has so truly incorporated and united himself with the Cross that in all truth we can say: Wisdom is the Cross, and the Cross is Wisdom. (LEW 180)

Come and enter into the depths of mystery of the Wisdom of God, not in mere philosophy but in carrying the cross.

In Luke 9:23, Jesus looks at his disciples and tells them, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it."

Do you listen to the voice of Jesus who, burdened with his Cross, calls out to you, "Come after me; anyone who follows me will not be walking in the dark; be brave; I have conquered the world."?

A perfect Friend of the Cross is a true Christ-bearer, so that he or she can truly say, "I live now not with my own life but with the life of Christ who lives in me." (Gal 2:20). As a perfect Friend of the Cross, the finding of our True Cross has to be more than just a mere discovery. It must lead us to embrace and follow Jesus Christ wholeheartedly, in whom salvation is found.

Come and discover "Friends of the Cross" at Montfort Centre for 3 days and 2 nights.

The great commissioning of Jesus Christ to his disciples was at the scene of the Ascension, where he mandated them to “go and make disciples of all nations.” We are all called to be his disciples, however sometimes it feels like we are just the fans of Jesus, much like the crowd in a football stadium. We merely admire Jesus but would not be ready to take up the cross and follow him. The cost of discipleship can be your very life, and therefore it is the challenge of Christian living that we must be prepared to give our life to the Lord. It is in partaking in his suffering and death that one can have the mark of true discipleship. We have this challenge to pay the full cost of discipleship to truly follow Jesus in his mission. To do this one has to develop this sense of inner freedom, to go wherever the Spirit of God beckons us. St. Louis Marie de Montfort in his “Prayer for Missionaries” implored the Lord to grant him followers who are free, with the freedom of the Holy Spirit, and courageous to face all adversity to bear witness to Jesus Christ and his Good News. This retreat time will lead the participants to reflect and pray for with the guide of St. Louis Marie de Montfort, the freedom and courage to be true disciples of Jesus and not just admiring from the periphery.

God’s invitation to each of us is to grow to be children of God (Rm 8:14-17). The ultimate end of Christian life is to become brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ. This is about growing into the likeness of Christ (1 Jn 3:2). A true Christian will take on this new nature in Jesus Christ and thus will adopt the heart of true child of God.

Jesus during his earthly life as man was granted St. Joseph as the foster-father. God in His Wisdom has chosen Joseph for this important task to be a father to the God-Man, Jesus. The father and child relationship is of great significance in a person’s growth, this is emulated in the case of St. Joseph as the foster father of Jesus. The significance of this relationship is not only in terms of the human level, such as being a protector, a role model, a provider, etc. It has also a very significant role in terms of a person’s spiritual growth.

Being the Year of St. Joseph, as proclaimed by Pope Francis (in Patris Corde), this upcoming retreat on the Paternal Heart will lead the participants into a deeper reflection on the role of St. Joseph in one’s spiritual growth as sons and daughters of God the Father. The Paternal Heart is one that launches followers of Christ into the world bearing the Good News of God’s Kingdom, as members of God’s household (Ep 2:19).

Come and experience spiritual growth as God's children with St. Joseph!
