✨ Less is more ✨
Here are 3 things great worship keys players do
1. Play less than they can
This is counter-intuitive, especially as keys players with so much available to us to use. Staying with a simple, uncomplicated motif(short recurring musical idea) will help us easily focus on what is happening in the room, rather than being distracted by coming up with an amazing line.
2. Follow the Spirit, not just chords
Our role as a worship team is to minister to God! One of the best ways to do that is to make space – whether for people to minister to Him, or for Him to move. If you feel the Spirit of God is leading the band somewhere, trust and respond accordingly. You are here to serve what God wants to do…
3. Support, not dominate
Following the existing melodies and rhythmic accents always works because it will keep us aligned with the song and the band. We learn to move together with the band, paying attention to who is playing what, what the worship leader is doing, and how to support. & when it’s time for keys to step forward, we do it with the same confidence that the rest of the band is supporting us.
TLDR:
Support is always about being aligned — simple techniques inspired by the song (eg. following a motif, repetition, keeping it small) are excellent ways to support well without overwhelming yourself and others. In these cases, less is more!
