Yesterday, we welcomed the seasonal divide with the Setsubun Service at our temple.
Setsubun 节分会 is an observance that marks the transition between seasons practiced in Japan. The word Setsubun meant “to divide the seasons,” referring to the day before the first day of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. It was especially valued as it was considered the beginning of the year, and over time, this day came to be emphasized. As a result, this day has become an established event known as Setsubun.
Since ancient times, it has been believed that during seasonal transitions, the harmony of body and mind becomes easily disturbed. Because of this, unseen impurities or negative forces were likened to “ogres,” and people scattered beans (福豆) to drive them away to welcome a pure and renewed season. 👹
Setsubun is also an important turning point for each of us to reflect upon our own hearts and let go of delusions and attachments. ✨
