A Devotee with a Strong Tendency Toward Aversion
🌿Devotee: I have a strong tendency toward aversion. I know that Ajahn used to be someone who easily got angry as well, but I also know that Ajahn teaches that we need to cultivate mindfulness (sati), stillness (samādhi), and wisdom (paññā) in order to face this situation. But whenever someone scolds me, I immediately become angry and react by scolding them back. So, I would like to ask Ajahn: in the past, when you were very angry, how did you deal with it? Thank you.
Ajahn Golf: Ajahn used many methods myself. First, we need to see the drawbacks of anger when it arises. Because anger truly brings no benefit at all, absolutely none. If we get angry, we only experience loss. If anger has no benefit, then why do we keep holding onto it? When we see the drawbacks of anger, we must use wisdom (paññā) to counteract it. We need mindfulness (sati) and wisdom. Because we cannot simply extinguish anger immediately; we need to gradually find ways to reduce it.
First, we need sufficient mindfulness to catch the emotion of anger in time, to become aware of it as soon as it arises: "Right now, I am angry." When we become aware of the angry emotion, even if it is very strong, we simply acknowledge it as it is. Contain it. Do not throw this emotion onto others. Do not express it through speech or actions. No matter how intense the emotion may be, do not release it outward. Do not allow this anger to go and strike someone else.
If we can endure in this way, then continue learning to endure until one day we discover the proper method for overcoming anger. Because once anger has already been expressed outwardly, it becomes kamma, and later we must bear its results (vipāka).
If it has not yet been expressed, it is like drafting a message that not yet been sent. We can still delete it. But if the message has already been sent, then it becomes a big problem.
When Ajahn first ordained, there was an incident that made me extremely angry. At that time, I went and paid homage to the Buddha, bowing repeatedly. I was alone in the shrine hall making prostrations.
At that time, there was almost nobody there, so nobody saw me. If people had seen me, they probably would have thought I had gone crazy, repeatedly bowing for no apparent reason, far beyond the usual three prostrations.
I just kept bowing and bowing. I do not know how many times I bowed.
Eventually my back started hurting, then other parts of my body started aching, and gradually the anger disappeared.
That was Ajahn’s method. If there is a certain defilement (kilesa) that I cannot eliminate, then I begin walking meditation (caṅkama). I continue walking until the defilement subsides. The most important thing is to remain with yourself and reflect.
Try to contain the anger and stay with yourself. When we become aware that this anger has become so strong that it is causing us suffering (dukkha), we naturally begin searching for ways to eliminate these unwholesome emotions and defilements.
Ajahn truly believes everyone here has the ability to overcome anger. But who is willing to accept and acknowledge this emotion, and then find a way to resolve it?
Can we accept that we have unwholesome habits? Can we accept ourselves and then resolve to change?
The Buddha said that if anyone can conquer this anger, they are the most excellent person in the world. Conquering a hundred or a thousand people in battle is still not as great as conquering anger just once. If we try not to engage with the emotion as it arises, soon it will fade away on its own.
It is like taming a tiger. Anger is like a tiger. If we continually obey it and keep feeding it, the tiger becomes larger and stronger. But if we stop feeding it and stop following its demands, the tiger gradually becomes weaker and weaker. Likewise, the emotion of anger will weaken and eventually lose its power.
So, remember this well: When angry, if there is something you want to say, do not say it yet. If there is something you want to do, do not do it yet. If you become angry somewhere, leave that place first.
If you are angry with someone, then step away from the crowd and spend some time alone.
Because when we are angry, it is almost like becoming insane. So, when one has "gone crazy", stay alone for a while and do not spread that madness to others. Remember that.
Then, no matter what, whether the other person was wrong or we were wrong, if we are the one who got angry first, then we are the one at fault. Who is actually right or wrong no longer matters; let it go. But if we are the one who became angry, then we are in the wrong.
The main reason anger does not subside is because we believe we are not at fault. If we are not wrong, why should we give in? But if we do give in, then we have admitted defeat, haven't we?
This anger deceives us, torments us, and destroys wholesome qualities (kusala-dhamma). Under intense anger, people can even harm their parents or commit extremely grave actions.
Such is the power of intense anger. And then, after the anger subsides, they may feel regret, but that regret cannot undo what has been done.
So, I hope everyone can make an effort not to act on anger. If we keep practicing like this, this angry emotion will gradually become lighter and weaker.
Alternatively, you can try Ajahn's method. When you get angry, go and bow to the Buddha. Or, if you want to accumulate even more merit (puñña), then bow to the person you are angry with. If you are angry with your husband, go bow to your husband. If you are angry with your child, go bow to your child.
Other people may think we have gone crazy.
