Zhang Guolao is one of the most legendary immortals among the Eight Immortals. The word “Lao” (Old) was not part of his name, but a respectful title given to him by later generations.
According to legend, he was a Taoist sage who lived in seclusion within the mountains of Hengzhou during the Tang dynasty. He claimed to be several hundred years old, appearing and disappearing freely without a trace. But what fascinated people most was his magical white donkey! 🐴✨
Zhang Guolao was famous for riding his white donkey backwards, calmly facing the opposite direction as he travelled. The donkey itself was said to be no ordinary creature — it could travel thousands of miles in a single day, and when resting, it could be folded up like paper and stored inside a box. Whenever needed again, a splash of water would instantly bring it back to life.
Emperor Tang Xuanzong greatly admired Zhang Guolao and invited him to the imperial court many times, treating him with the highest respect and granting him the title “Tongxuan Xiansheng”. Yet Zhang Guolao cared little for fame or wealth, repeatedly declining imperial rewards before eventually disappearing once more into the mountains.
