Zhang Guolao is one of the most legendary immortals among the Eight Immortals. The word “Lao” (Old) was not part of his name, but a respectful title given to him by later generations.
According to legend, he was a Taoist sage who lived in seclusion within the mountains of Hengzhou during the Tang dynasty. He claimed to be several hundred years old, appearing and disappearing freely without a trace. But what fascinated people most was his magical white donkey! 🐴✨
Zhang Guolao was famous for riding his white donkey backwards, calmly facing the opposite direction as he travelled. The donkey itself was said to be no ordinary creature — it could travel thousands of miles in a single day, and when resting, it could be folded up like paper and stored inside a box. Whenever needed again, a splash of water would instantly bring it back to life.
Emperor Tang Xuanzong greatly admired Zhang Guolao and invited him to the imperial court many times, treating him with the highest respect and granting him the title “Tongxuan Xiansheng”. Yet Zhang Guolao cared little for fame or wealth, repeatedly declining imperial rewards before eventually disappearing once more into the mountains.

Lan Caihe is one of the most free-spirited figures among the Eight Immortals. In folk legends, Lan Caihe was originally male, yet often dressed in feminine clothing, carrying a flower basket while singing and wandering through the streets — a figure both eccentric and immortal-like, unforgettable to all who encountered him.
It is said that Lan Caihe was once a wandering Taoist priest, while some legends believe he was the reincarnation of the Barefoot Immortal. He was often seen wearing ragged blue robes, with one foot in a boot and the other barefoot. Though his behavior appeared strange or even mad, he always carried an air of immortality.
According to legend, Lan Caihe loved carrying a pair of singing clappers while walking through towns, drinking wine and singing freely along the way — appearing half-drunk, half-crazy, yet deeply carefree. Because of this, he became a symbol of freedom and spiritual ease. 🌿
The flower basket he carried also represents blessings, abundance, and good fortune, making Lan Caihe a beloved immortal in folk culture. 🧺✨

Tieguai Li, one of the Eight Immortals. According to folklore, his original name was Li Xuan.
It is said that he was once a handsome man who later chose to retreat into the mountains to cultivate the Dao. Before leaving his body behind to journey spiritually to a sacred mountain in search of immortals and wisdom, he instructed his disciple to cremate his body only if he did not return within seven days. However, when the disciple’s mother fell seriously ill, he cremated the body on the sixth day instead.
When Li Xuan’s spirit returned, his body had already turned to ashes. With no choice, he entered the body of a recently deceased beggar. From then on, he appeared as a ragged, lame man leaning on an iron crutch, earning the name “Tieguai Li”.
Despite his shabby appearance, Tieguai Li possessed great magical powers. His iron crutch was not just a walking stick, but a mystical treasure said to help him travel through the skies and across great distances instantly. The gourd he carried at his waist was also believed to contain sacred medicine for healing the sick and even powers to subdue demons and evil spirits.

Mangzhong(Grain in Ear) is the 9th of the 24 Solar Terms, usually occurring around 5 June each year.
The name “Mangzhong” carries two meanings:
• “Mang” refers to awned grains such as rice, wheat, millet, and sorghum
• “Zhong” means both “seed” and “to sow”
👉 In essence, Mangzhong marks the time when crops with awns are ready for harvest, while it is also the ideal season for sowing new crops
🌱 Why is it also called “Mangzhong”?
There is a common saying: “Mangzhong, busy planting”. This is because it coincides with the peak of the “Three Summer” farming period:
• Summer harvest – reaping mature crops
• Summer planting – sowing the next cycle
• Summer field management – tending and maintaining crops
During this time, farmers are extremely busy, which is why Mangzhong is often associated with the idea of intense agricultural activity.

Today marks the Birthday of Master Physician Hua Tuo. 🙏
Hua Tuo, courtesy name Yuanhua, was a renowned physician of the late Eastern Han Dynasty. He was honoured together with D**g Feng and Zhang Zhongjing as the “Three Great Physicians of Jian’an”, and is also recognised alongside Bian Que, Zhang Zhongjing, and Li Shizhen as one of the “Four Great Physicians of Ancient China”.
✨ Hua Tuo was highly skilled in internal medicine, surgery, acupuncture, gynaecology, and paediatrics, with exceptional expertise in surgical treatment. Because of this, later generations respectfully honoured him as the “Father of Surgery”.
It is said that he invented “Ma Fei San”, an ancient herbal anaesthetic that allowed patients to undergo treatment in a near-unconscious state — regarded as a major breakthrough in the history of ancient Chinese medicine.
In addition, Hua Tuo also created the famous health-preservation exercise known as the “Wu Qin Xi”, inspired by the movements of the tiger, deer, bear, monkey, and bird. Through these exercises, he promoted the idea of “nurturing health through movement”, which continues to influence wellness practices today.
In Taoist belief, Master Hua Tuo is respectfully honoured as “Qing Nang Ji Shi Hua Zhen Ren” and “Shen Gong Miao Shou Hua Zhen Ren”, and remains deeply revered by devotees. ✨
📍 At Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple, sacred images of Master Hua Tuo is enshrined for devotees to offer prayers and seek blessings for good health, peace, and well-being. 🙏

Today marks the Birthday of the Great Emperor of Purple Subtlety.
In the Taoist celestial hierarchy, the “Three Pure Ones” are regarded as the highest deities, while the “Four Sovereigns” assist the Jade Emperor in governing Heaven, Earth, and all realms. The Great Emperor of Purple Subtlety is one of these revered Four Sovereigns.
Also known as the “Zhong Tian Zi Wei Bei Ji Tai Huang Da Di”, Great Emperor of Purple Subtlety is honoured as the “Lord of the Stars”. According to Taoist belief, He governs the sun, moon, stars, seasonal changes, and celestial phenomena, while overseeing the gods of the heavens and mountains. He is therefore also regarded as a powerful deity associated with wind, rain, and thunder.
Ancient people believed that the North Star occupied the most central and exalted position in the sky, and thus it was called “Ziwei”. Taoist scriptures describe it as the “Lord of All Stars” and the “Origin of All Deities”. For this reason, the imperial palace of ancient Chinese emperors later became known as the “Zi Jin Cheng”, symbolising supreme honour and authority.
Throughout history, the Great Emperor of Purple Subtlety was deeply revered by many Chinese emperors, especially during the Song Dynasty, when He was often worshipped together with the Jade Emperor. ✨
📍 At Lorong Koo Chye Sheng Hong Temple, sacred images of the Great Emperor of Purple Subtlety is enshrined for devotees to offer prayers and seek blessings for peace, smooth fortune, and lasting prosperity. 🙏

Today marks the Birthday of Goddess of Flowers Blossom, also known as the “Golden Flower Festival”.
Goddess of Flowers Blossom, also known as Jinhua Shengmu or Lady Jinhua, is revered in Chinese folk belief as a goddess of childbirth and child protection. She is especially worshipped in Guangdong and Guangxi, and is often regarded as one of the “Goddesses of Fertility”.
According to legend during the Ming Dynasty, the wife of a Guangzhou imperial inspector encountered difficulties during childbirth. Exhausted and distressed, the inspector dreamt of an old man who told him, “Invite a girl named Jinhua, and both mother and child will be safe.”
He immediately ordered his men to search throughout the city for women named “Jinhua”. When the final girl — only fourteen years old — entered the residence, the inspector’s wife successfully gave birth to a baby boy, and both mother and child were safe and well.
Since then, the belief in Goddess of Flowers Blossom’s blessings for safe childbirth and family prosperity has spread widely, and the “Golden Flower Festival” gradually became an important folk celebration in the Cantonese region. ✨
