Today, the Church rejoices at the morning star of our hope — the birth of Mary, the humble handmaid of the Lord, the Mother of Jesus, and our beloved Mother.

Before the world heard her fiat, God had already prepared her heart.
Before she held the Saviour in her arms, she was held in the loving plan of God.

In Mary, we glimpse the beauty of a heart completely open to God — humble enough to listen, courageous enough to surrender, and faithful enough to follow wherever He leads.

Today, the Catholic Church celebrates the FEAST OF SAINT TERESA OF CALCUTTA, a woman whose life became a powerful witness to Christ’s love for the poorest and most forgotten.

Born Gonxha Agnes Bojaxhiu to Albanian parents in what is now Skopje, North Macedonia, Saint Teresa grew up with a strong desire to serve God. At the age of 18, she entered the Loreto Sisters in Dublin and later traveled to India, where she took the name Teresa.

For many years, she taught at a girls’ school in Calcutta. Although she worked among students from comfortable families, she could not ignore the extreme poverty and suffering surrounding the city.

Then, in 1946, while traveling by train to Darjeeling, Sister Teresa experienced what she described as a “call within a call.” She believed Christ was asking her to leave the convent and serve Him directly among the poorest of the poor.

With permission from the Church, she left the Loreto Sisters and began a new mission. After receiving basic nursing training, she returned to Calcutta, moved into the slums, and opened a school for poor children.

Wearing a simple white sari with a blue border, she went from home to home, caring for the sick, comforting the dying, and reaching out to people who had been abandoned by society.

Her mission quickly grew.

Volunteers joined her, including some of her former students, while others provided food, clothing, medicine, buildings, and other necessities. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a congregation dedicated to serving those most in need.

The ministry eventually expanded to care for orphans, abandoned children, the elderly, the sick, people struggling with addiction, and those living on the streets.

For decades, Mother Teresa traveled around the world, asking people to recognize the dignity of every human person and to see the face of Jesus in the poorest of the poor.

Her dedication to the suffering earned worldwide recognition, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Yet despite her fame, she continued to describe her work simply as an act of love and service to Christ.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta died on September 5, 1997. Nearly two decades later, she was canonized as a saint by Pope Francis on September 4, 2016.

On her feast day, may Saint Teresa remind us that holiness is not always found in extraordinary places. Sometimes, it is found in a small act of kindness, a hand extended to someone who is suffering, a meal given to the hungry, or simply taking the time to care for someone whom the world has forgotten.

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

May we learn from Saint Teresa to recognize Christ not only in the Church and in prayer, but also in the poor, the sick, the lonely, and the forgotten.

*St. Alphonsus Liguori*
*Feast day: August 1*

St. Alphonsus Liguori is a doctor of the Church who is widely known for his contribution to moral theology and his great kindness.

He was born in 1696 in Naples to a well-respected family, and was the oldest of 7 children. His father was Don Joseph de’ Liguori, a naval officer and Captain of the Royal Galleys, and his mother came from Spanish descent. He was very intelligent, even as a young boy. As a boy of great aptitude, he picked up many things very quickly. St. Alphonsus did not attend school; rather, he was taught by tutors at home where his father kept a watchful eye. Moreover, he practiced the harpsichord for 3 hours a day at the heed of his father and soon became a virtuoso at the age of 13. For recreation, he was an equestrian, fencer, and card player. As grew into a young man, he developed an inclination for opera. He was much more interested in listening to the music than watching the performance. St. Alphonsus would often take his spectacles off, which aided his myopic eyes, in order to merely listen. While theatre in Naples was in a relatively good state, the young saint developed an ascetic aversion to perhaps what he viewed as gaudy displays. He had strongly refused participation in a parlor play.

At the age of 16, he became a doctor of civil law on January 21, 1713, though by law, 20 was the set age. After studying for the bar, he practiced law at the age of 19 in the courts. It is said in his 8 years as a lawyer, he never lost a case. Although, he resigned from a brilliant career as a lawyer in 1723 when he lost a case because he overlooked a small, but important, piece of evidence.

His resignation, however, proved profitable for the Church. He entered the seminary and was ordained three years later in 1726. He soon became a sought-after preacher and confessor in Naples. His so sermons were simple and well organized that they appealed to all people, both learned and unlearned. However, his time as a diocesan priest was short-lived: in 1732, he went to Scala and founded the Redemptorists, a preaching order.

He was a great moral theologian and his famous book, “Moral Theology”, was published in 1748. Thirty years later, he was appointed bishop, and he retired in 1775. He died just over 10 years later in 1787, and was canonized in 1839.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) was a Spanish priest, theologian, and mystic who founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and became one of the most influential figures of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Born into a noble Basque family, he initially pursued a military career driven by ambition and the pursuit of honor. His life changed dramatically after a cannonball severely injured him during the Battle of Pamplona in 1521. While recovering, he read about the life of Christ and the saints, leading to a profound spiritual conversion that inspired him to abandon his former lifestyle and dedicate himself completely to serving God.

After years of prayer, study, and spiritual formation, Ignatius wrote The Spiritual Exercises, a guide for prayer and discernment that continues to shape Christian spirituality today. He later founded the Society of Jesus with a group of companions, including Saint Francis Xavier, and became its first Superior General after the order was approved by Pope Paul III in 1540. Under his leadership, the Jesuits became renowned for their commitment to education, missionary work, and service, guided by the motto Ad maiorem Dei gloriam (“For the greater glory of God”). Ignatius spent his final years in Rome overseeing the growing order until his death on July 31, 1556. Canonized in 1622, he is honored as the patron saint of soldiers, military personnel, and spiritual retreats.

The feast day of St. Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated on July 28. She was born in India in 1910 and is the second canonized saint of India.

Baptized as Anna, her mother died just three months after she was born and St. Alphonsa was raised by family. After falling into a pit of burning chaff, her feet were badly burned leaving her disabled. Her grandmother was a pious woman and taught St. Alphonsa to care for the poor, lead evening prayer, and live with the joy of the faithful.

When Anna received her first Holy Communion, her heart surged with joy. She knew Jesus was living inside of her now. Later, she marked the beginning of her religious vocation to that moment of receiving her "divine Spouse" within her.

In 1927 at the age of 17 she joined the Poor Clares at Christ Convent at Bharananganam where she took the name Alphonsa. She took the habit in May 1930, and, almost instantly, endured great physical and spiritual suffering, which she endured willingly,

After enduring illnesses over many years St. Alphonsa died at the age of 35. Her tomb is a site for pilgrims due to the many reported miracles at the site. The miracle which was approved by the Vatican for her canonization was the curing of a child with a club foot. St. Alphonsa was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008.

TODAY IS THE FEAST OF SAINT CHARBEL MAKHLOUF
24 JULY

St. Charbel Makhlouf, the beloved Lebanese monk and hermit, is one of the most renowned miracle-working saints of modern times.

Since his death in 1898, the Monastery of St. Maron in Annaya, Lebanon, has documented more than 30,000 reported healings and extraordinary favors attributed to his intercession. Pilgrims from around the world continue to visit his tomb each year, seeking spiritual and physical healing.

While many of these reported healings have been recorded and investigated by the monastery, the Catholic Church applies a much stricter standard when evaluating miracles for sainthood.

For St. Charbel's causes of beatification and canonization, the Church officially examined and approved specific miracles that were deemed medically inexplicable after rigorous investigation by physicians, theologians, and Vatican authorities.

These authenticated miracles played a key role in his beatification by Pope St. Paul VI in 1965 and his canonization in 1977.

Even today, testimonies continue to arrive from people who believe they have received extraordinary graces, healings, and conversions through the saint's intercession.

Whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, these accounts have helped make St. Charbel one of the most beloved saints of the modern era and a powerful symbol of faith, prayer, and trust in God.

Dear St. Joseph, faithful guardian of Jesus and loving spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we come before you with humble hearts.
Teach us to trust God even when we cannot see the way ahead. Help us to work faithfully, love selflessly, and serve others with humility and courage.

Protect our families, guide our decisions, strengthen us in times of difficulty, and lead us closer to Jesus every day.
May your example of quiet obedience inspire us to follow God's will with confidence and peace.

ST. MARIA GORETTI: THE LITTLE MARTYR OF PURITY WHOSE LIFE CAN INSPIRE OUR GENERATION

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8)

Every generation searches for heroes. Some admire wealth, fame, beauty, or power. Yet the Church presents to the world a young girl of only eleven years whose quiet faith continues to speak more than a century after her death. That child is St. Maria Goretti, known as the Lily of Purity and the Young Martyr of Chastity.

Her life demonstrates that holiness is not measured by age but by love for God.

A Humble Beginning

Maria Goretti was born on October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, Italy, into a poor but deeply faithful Catholic family. Her parents taught her to pray, to love the Blessed Virgin Mary, and to trust God in every circumstance.

When her father died of malaria, Maria’s childhood became even more difficult. Although she was very young, she willingly helped her widowed mother by cooking, cleaning, caring for her younger siblings, and carrying out many responsibilities with joy rather than complaint.

She understood that ordinary work offered with love becomes an act of holiness.

A Child Deeply in Love with God

Maria was known for her simplicity, kindness, obedience, and prayerful spirit.

She eagerly prepared for Holy Communion and treasured receiving Jesus in the Eucharist whenever she could. Those who knew her remembered her as cheerful, generous, and deeply respectful toward everyone.

She did not seek attention or greatness. She simply desired to please God.

Her Courage in Defending Her Faith

On July 5, 1902, Maria was attacked by Alessandro Serenelli, a young man who sought to assault her.

Maria resisted, not because she hated him, but because she believed that both she and Alessandro were called to holiness. According to the traditional account, she pleaded with him to stop, saying that what he intended was sinful and would offend God.

Her resistance was an act of courage and fidelity to her conscience.

She suffered severe injuries and died the following day.

The Miracle of Forgiveness

Perhaps the greatest lesson of Maria Goretti’s life is not only her purity but also her forgiveness.

While dying, she forgave Alessandro and prayed that one day he would be with her in heaven.

Years later, while serving a prison sentence, Alessandro experienced a profound conversion. He later said that Maria appeared to him in a dream, offering him white lilies—a symbol of purity and forgiveness. After his release, he sought forgiveness from Maria’s mother, Assunta Goretti.

Remarkably, she forgave him, saying that if her daughter had forgiven him, she could not refuse to do the same.

Alessandro lived the rest of his life in repentance and prayer.

This extraordinary story reminds us that God’s mercy can transform even a deeply wounded heart.

Why Today’s Generation Needs St. Maria Goretti

Our world often confuses freedom with doing whatever we desire. St. Maria Goretti teaches another path—the freedom to choose what is good, holy, and life-giving.

Young people today can learn from her:

* That purity begins in the heart, in our thoughts, words, and actions.
* That true love always respects the dignity of another person.
* That courage sometimes means standing firm even when it is difficult.
* That forgiveness has the power to heal wounds and break cycles of hatred.
* That holiness is possible at any age.

Parents can imitate Maria’s family by making prayer part of everyday life.

Children can imitate Maria by respecting their parents, helping at home, speaking kindly, and growing in faith.

Communities can imitate her by protecting children, respecting every person’s dignity, and responding to violence with justice and compassion.

Our Generation Can Be Changed
