01.06.2026

Entering the Avatamsaka Dharma Realm, Returning to Amitabha’s Ocean of Vows — SBL Avatamsaka Dharma Assembly Commences

On 1 June 2026, the Lodge solemnly commenced its 21-day Avatamsaka Dharma Assembly at the Bhadrapala Hall on Level 5. This auspicious event attracted nearly 340 devotees, who gathered to recite the sutra, cultivate blessings and wisdom, and share in the Dharma together.

The assembly is centred on the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Adornment Sutra), often honoured as the “King of Sutras” for its profound teachings and vast vision of the Dharma Realm. It is regarded as the first scripture expounded by the Buddha after his enlightenment, revealing the boundless wisdom and enlightened state of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

Spanning eighty fascicles, the Avatamsaka Sutra encompasses a vast and profound vision of the Dharma, revealing the perfect interpenetration of principle and phenomena while guiding beings to awaken their inherent wisdom. Through the celebrated account of Sudhana’s fifty-three spiritual visits, practitioners are led into the wondrous realm of the Huayan Dharma Realm and, ultimately, under the guidance of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, toward Amitabha Buddha’s Ocean of Vows. Well-known passages such as “One flower contains a world” and “All phenomena are created by the mind” continue to be widely quoted and cherished today.

Throughout the assembly, devotees gather each morning at 8.30am to recite the Avatamsaka Sutra under the guidance of the Venerables. To further dedicate merits to all beings, seven sessions of the Yogacara Ulka-mukha Ceremony will also be conducted during the assembly, offering to the Buddhas and celestial beings, while providing food and blessings to suffering spirits.

We warmly invite devotees and members of the public to join this auspicious Avatamsaka Dharma Assembly. Through the recitation of this profound sutra and the resonant sounds of Buddhist chants, may all cultivate blessings and wisdom, deepen their spiritual practice, and forge wholesome affinities with others.

May the merits generated from this assembly be dedicated to world peace, harmony among nations, favourable weather, and the happiness and well-being of all people.

🙏 Homage to the Buddhas and Bodhisattva Mahasattvas of the Avatamsaka Assembly

A Day of Supreme Auspiciousness — SBL Holds Vesak Day Offering Ceremony

Following the Bathing Buddha Ceremony on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month and the Light Transference Ceremony held on the evening of the 14th day, SBL conducted its Vesak Day Offering Ceremony at 9:00 a.m. in the Buddha Hall today. The ceremony commemorated the Birth, Enlightenment and Parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha — three significant events traditionally observed together on Vesak Day. Nearly 550 devotees gathered in reverence to participate in this meaningful ceremony.

The ceremony began with 70 students from the Miaoji Children’s Dharma Class presenting “Song of the Triple Gem” and “Praise to the Buddha”. Their pure and heartfelt voices, accompanied by the sound of the wooden fish, filled the hall with joy and devotion. This was followed by the offering procession, during which devotees respectfully passed ten symbolic offerings — incense, flowers, lamps, fragrant water, fruits, tea, food, treasures, jewels and robes — expressing gratitude, reverence and devotion to the Buddha.

At the same time, a parallel offering ceremony was held at the Guanyin Auditorium on Level 7, where children and parents participated together under the guidance of Miaoji Children’s Dharma Class teachers. The atmosphere was both warm and dignified, reflecting the importance of Buddhist education and family cultivation in the Dharma.

In his address, SBL President Mr. Tan Lee Huak reminded the congregation that the uncertainties and conflicts occurring around the world today highlight how precious peace truly is, and how rare and precious human life can be. He encouraged everyone to uphold the Buddha’s teachings of compassion, wisdom, non-violence and harmlessness, while cherishing peace and making good use of this precious opportunity to practise the Dharma for the benefit of oneself and others.

Mr. Tan further shared that Buddhism has always been rooted in compassion and altruism. By reducing greed, anger and ignorance, and nurturing kindness and wholesome intentions, individuals can help lessen conflict and division in society, contributing to greater harmony and stability in the world. He also encouraged devotees to treasure the opportunity to encounter and practise the Buddha’s teachings, to cultivate wholesome deeds diligently, and to deepen their faith and aspiration through mindfulness of the Buddha, steadily progressing on the path towards the Pure Land.

The ceremony concluded with a collective prayer for the Buddha Dharma to long endure, for the Dharma Wheel to continue turning, for world peace, favourable weather, social harmony and lasting peace, and for all beings to be free from suffering and attain enlightenment.

【Light Transference Ceremony: Passing on the Flame of Wisdom and Blessings — SBL Holds Solemn Vesak Light Transference Ceremony】

🪷 Lights kindling lights, radiance illuminating radiance; a single lamp of wisdom dispels the darkness of ignorance.

On the eve of Vesak Day at 7:30 PM, the Lodge solemnly held a Light Transference Ceremony. Directors, members, volunteers, and devotees faithfully gathered in the Buddha Hall. More than 500 participants, each holding a lotus lamp, took part in this auspicious ceremony together.

The assembly recited the Heart Sutra, Praise to the Buddha, and the Aspiration Prayer for Offering Light. Accompanied by the recitation of the Buddha’s name, the participants circumambulated the monastery. The lights of wisdom stretched endlessly, and the lodge was serene and dignified.

SBL’s Chief Dharma Master, Venerable Yanxu, then led the assembly in the recitation of the Aspiration Prayer for Offering Light:

May all sentient beings, attain the Immeasurable Light, with great loving-kindness and compassion, and protect all in the ten directions.
May all sentient beings, attain the Boundless Light, to obtain the Middle Path's wisdom, and depart from the harbour of wrong views.
May all sentient beings, attain the Unimpeded Light, with the mind like empty space, that includes the limitless ten thousands forms.
May all sentient beings, attain the Incomparable Light, returning to without that attained, and one true ultimate form.
May all sentient beings, attain the Flame King Light, so the Avīci Hell, is to be suddenly illuminated.
May all sentient beings, attain the Pure Light, to transform lustful desire's fire, and become bright light's treasury.
May all sentient beings, attain the Joyful Light, to eliminate anger, with compassionate mind facing one another.
May all sentient beings, attain the Wisdom Light, in dream's mountains and rivers, at water's moon's place for practicing the path.
May all sentient beings, attain the Uninterrupted Light, to grieve on birth and death, and plant the diligence banner.
May all sentient beings, attain the Difficult-To-Conceive Light, with mental activities eliminated, and connection with response difficult to measure.
May all sentient beings, attain the Unnamable Light, with spoken words severed, and wonderful sound spreading far and wide.
May all sentient beings, attain the Surpassing Sun-Moon Light, to diligently cultivate pure karmas, for the mind to flower and blossom.

Countless lotus lamps came together to form a radiant sea of lights, as the assembly reverently offered lamps in homage to the Buddha with utmost sincerity and respect. Amid the harmonious chanting and the gentle glow of the lights, everyone joined their palms with devotion, passing on the lamp of wisdom sincerely, and together offered prayers: may the Dharma flow endlessly, may the lamp of wisdom shine without end, may there be peace in the world, and may all beings be freed from suffering, attain happiness, and ultimately realize Buddhahood.

净智庄严功德海;

【Sakyamuni Buddha’s Sacred Birthday: A Great Cause and Condition in the Saha World — Bathing The Buddha Ceremony Solemnly Held at the Lodge】

🪷 A ladle of fragrant water cleanses away defilements;
a single thought of reverence nurtures a pure mind.

24 May 2026 (the 8th day of the 4th lunar month) marks the Sacred Birthday of our Fundamental Teacher, Sakyamuni Buddha, also known as the Festival of Bathing the Buddha—an important day in Chinese Mahayana Buddhism commemorating the Buddha’s birth. At 9:30 a.m., the Lodge solemnly held its annual Bathing the Buddha Ceremony in the Buddha Hall. More than 400 devotees gathered in sincere reverence to pay homage to the Buddha and participate in the bathing ritual, sharing in the Buddha’s compassion and blessings.

More than 2,500 years ago, the Buddha was born beneath an Asoka (Sal) tree in Lumbini Garden of the ancient Indian kingdom of Kapilavastu. According to Buddhist scriptures, when Prince Siddhartha was born, nine dragons spouted water to bathe him, symbolising the appearance of a sage in the world—pure and undefiled. In later generations, Buddhist disciples established the Bathing the Buddha Festival based on this account, using fragrant water to bathe the statue of the infant prince as an expression of gratitude to the Buddha, while rejoicing that all sentient beings in the Three Realms may establish the causes and conditions for liberation through the Buddha’s birth and teachings.

The Sutra on the Merits of Bathing the Buddha records that when bathing the Buddha, one should sincerely recite the Bathing The Buddha Verse:

“As I now bathe all Thus Come Ones,
May pure wisdom adorn the ocean of merits and virtues;
May sentient beings troubled by the five defilements be freed from the dust of afflictions;
And together realise the pure Dharma Body of the Thus Come Ones.”

The verse expresses the aspiration that, through sincere devotion and the offering of fragrant water to bathe the Buddhas, all beings may be freed from afflictions and impurities, purify body and mind, increase blessings and wisdom, and ultimately realise the pure Dharma Body together.

Bathing The Buddha is not merely an outward act of reverence; it also reminds us to constantly reflect on our own minds and cleanse ourselves of inner afflictions such as greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, and doubt. With a pure mind, we learn from the Buddha’s spirit of compassion and wisdom—this is the true meaning of Bathing the Buddha.

The Lodge’s Bathing the Buddha pool will remain open until 31 May (Sunday), from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. The public is warmly invited to participate in the ritual and share in the Buddha’s blessings.

At 1:30 p.m. that same day, the Threefold Refuge and Five Precepts Ceremony was held in the Buddha Hall. Approximately 107 devotees made solemn vows before the Triple Gem—the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha—on this exceptionally auspicious day, officially becoming disciples of the Buddha. Among them, 53 disciples further undertook the Five Precepts: refraining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, and intoxicants. By ceasing evil, cultivating good, and purifying body and mind, they commit themselves to practising according to the Buddha’s teachings and progressing along the path to liberation.
