Hosea 4 - Warning For Religious But Ungodly People
——————————————————————
Wow Hosea 4 gets intense.

4:3 shows the effects of sin and ungodliness - the land mourns, the people languishes (weakens and wastes away), even animals, birds and fish are affected!
v6 - God’s people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, and rejected by God
v8 - appetite for iniquity instead of appetite for God
V10 - abandoning their devotion to God
v13 - they are still religious, but their worship and offering to the Lord are unacceptable
v16 - an obstinate people God Himself cannot shepherd!
v17 - leaders FERVENTLY LOVE disgrace
v18 - the people will eventually be ashamed of their own sacrifices/worship

So intense, such a strong word even for believers today esp in a society like Singapore - successful, rich, materialistic, self-indulgent and proud - the world making its way into the church instead of the church influencing the world.

The church in Singapore needs to rise to God’s call before destruction and rejection amidst our enjoyment of the things of the world.

Tears in a worship gathering without fear of the Lord that leads to adherence to the Word in daily living are mere emotions that do not produce true conviction or conversion of the heart.

DWP #5: Letting Your Devotion Go Public

Leading worship is not just about telling the congregation what to do and how to approach God which many worship leaders do, but leading worship is also very much about letting your devotion go public!

Worship leaders need to model what it means to truly worship. When we worship and devote ourselves to God publicly, we are leading worship by our example.

The congregation learns to worship and enter God’s presence not only by being taught and instructed, but also by catching the way and the spirit of worship from the worship leader. And I would say the latter is of greater importance.

DWP #4: Song Selection

The choice of songs in a worship set reflects where the worship leader is at in his or her walk with the Lord and where his or her heart is focused. The following are a few examples, by no means comprehensive.

If the worship leader is in need of God's grace, love and forgiveness, these themes will be dominant in the the songs they choose

If the worship leader is very much into creative musical interpretations of songs, excellent musicianship, they would choose songs that emphasise that.

If the worship leader is hungry for a move of God, for more of Him and for revival, they would choose songs that reflect that hunger and desire.

DWP #3: The Anointing

Excellent musicianship is empty without the anointing.
Without the anointing, it is mere performance and showmanship. Without the anointing, it is a carnal effort. Without the anointing, we are merely entertainers, not worshippers and definitely not ministers.

With the anointing, excellent musicianship turns into divinely powerful musicianship that fights spiritual battles, breaks down spiritual strongholds, leads both the worship ministers and congregation into the holy of holies to encounter the living God face to face, facedown, to wait on Him, to hear from Him, be transformed and commissioned by Him.

God's anointing is preceded by a groaning prayerful hunger and desire for more of God - not only on the part of the worship leader but every member of the worship team.

Every worship minister ought to grow in becoming a prayer warrior, an intercessor. While there is a main worship leader, everyone else on the platform is a co-worship leader - not a mere singer or musician.

The moment we get that, we will get serious and hungry, we will pray and groan, we will long and yearn to enter into the presence of God to encounter Him and most importantly, on a daily basis, we will pursue holiness. After all, who may ascend the hill of the Lord but the one who has cleans hands and a pure heart?

Holiness and consecration are part of a daily process, not just the few days before we are on duty to serve in the team. As for the few days before, further consecration may be needed and that is why some would fast (even from normal activities and regular entertainment) and pray more, unclutter their usually busy lives and minimise all distractions.

We should also spend more time entering into God's presence through prayer, worship and the meditation of the Word at a personal level so that we may lead others to where we have first been. How can one lead others to where they have not been?

If you want the visitation of God in your church worship, you need the anointing and when the anointing comes, even the non-believers present will fall on their knees and worship and exclaim that "truly God is among you"!

1Cor.14:24 But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, 25 as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

DWP #2: Keep It Simple

I don’t know about you, but for me, while there are many great modern worship songs out there with profound lyrics that communicate deep theologies, sometimes with up to four or five verses, coupled with a beautiful and stirring chorus plus a tag that sounds like a completely different song (another beautiful song added to an already beautiful song), yet the songs that really work for me most of the time – by that, I mean songs that lead me right into the presence of God, songs that really draw me near to the Lord, songs that strangely warm my heart and bring tears to my eyes, are the ones with simple words.

An example is the song Draw Me Closer which we used to sing many years ago …..

Draw me closer, Lord
Draw me closer, dear Lord
So that I might see You
So that I might see You
Lord, I want to see You

Another example is Kent Henry’s I Want to be More Like You …..

I want to be more like You
I want to be more like You
I want to be a vessel You work through
I want to be more like You

A new example is the song Only Just Begun by Sean Feucht …..

Won't you come like you always do
As we gather to worship you
Won't you come like you always do
As we gather to worship you

We've only just begun
To love on you

Let us fill the atmosphere
with the sound of our love
Let us fill the atmosphere
with the sound of our praise

Simple worship often leads us to deeper worship.

DWP #1 What’s So Bad About a Little Finger-Picking?

I remember hearing a pastor share many years ago in his teaching on musicianship and worship-leading without distraction.

He demonstrated and sang, “This is my desire to honor You, Lord with all my heart I worship You. (2 bar transition) All I have within me …..” He played his guitar straight and simple as he sang the first time.

Then he repeated the same phrase, this time, during the 2 bar transition, he did some fancy finger-picking before going on to sing, “All I have within me ….”

He stopped, looked at the group and said, “if you are not careful, your musicianship can become a distraction and you lose your focus on God. It feels shiok (good) when we do that finger-picking but it could take our eyes off the Lord.”

(Not that finger-picking and ad libs are always a bad thing but they can become distracting.)

I thought that was a truly deeper worship principle!
