Met ons diepste geloof in Christus en de hoop op de wederopstanding delen wij met een zwaar hart het inslapen van onze zeer eerwaarde Vader Abt Eliyo Atto, zo verbonden met het Mor Ephrem klooster. Hij nam op woensdag 8 april 2026 in Glane, Nederland, vredig afscheid van dit leven – een moment van stille rouw voor ons allemaal.
Vader Abt Eliyo werd in 1940 geboren als zoon van Atto en Zero Dbe Misqo in Mzizah, Tur ‘Abdin, het hart van de Syrisch-orthodoxe gemeenschap in Zuidoost-Turkije. Na zijn militaire dienst en werk in een Grieks ziekenhuis in Istanboel volgde hij in 1967 zijn roeping naar het Mor Gabriel klooster, net als zijn zus Seyde Atto (†10 mei 2020), die hem een paar jaar eerder was voorgegaan. In 1976 wijdde hij zich volledig aan de studie van de Syrische taal en de leer der kerkvaders aan het Mor Ephrem seminarie in Atchaneh (Libanon), waarna hij in 1977 samen met zijn zus dayrayto Seyde door patriarch Mor Yacoub III naar het Mor Markus klooster in Jeruzalem werden gezonden, waar ze beiden met nederigheid en toewijding hebben gediend.
Op uitnodiging van de zalige aartsbisschop Mor Julius Yeshu‘ Çiçek bouwde hij vanaf 1979 mee aan de Syrisch-Orthodoxe gemeenschap in Nederland: eerst in de Mor Yuhanon kerk in Hengelo, later in het Mor Ephrem klooster in Glane. Daar diende hij met hart en ziel – eerst alleen als monnik, vanaf 1989 als priester en vanaf 1994 als abt. Nadat aartsbisschop Mor Julius Yeshu Çiçek in 1996 het Mor Augin klooster in Arth-Goldau (Zwitserland) had verworven, begeleidde Vader Abt Eliyo daar het eerste anderhalf jaar de opbouw van de gemeenschap, tot hij in 1998 terugkeerde naar het Mor Ephrem klooster.
Zijn liefde voor verre oorden en mensen liet hem veel liefde schenken én ontvangen. Altijd zocht hij het lichtende goede, bleef vriendelijk en goedmoedig, ook in tijden van beproeving. Kinderen kenden hem liefkozend als de monnik die met vreugde cadeautjes uitdeelde. Tijdens zijn liefdadigheidsreizen naar India raakte hij diep onder de indruk van de stille en oprechte spiritualiteit van de lokale gelovigen.
Getooid met de monastieke deugden – zachtmoedigheid, nederigheid, stilte, gehoorzaamheid en onophoudelijk gebed – leefde hij een leven verborgen in Christus. Als schrijver en kalligraaf verzorgde hij met grote toewijding liturgische, Bijbelse en theologische handschriften; zijn prachtig versierde Syrische Evangelie-lectionarium is een blijvende getuigenis van zijn vakmanschap en zijn liefde voor onze heilige traditie.
Nadere bijzonderheden over de uitvaart volgen binnenkort, zodat wij samen afscheid kunnen nemen.
Moge zijn nagedachtenis eeuwig leven in ons midden, en moge zijn ziel rusten bij de rechtvaardigen. Amen.

† In Memoriam: Abbot Eliyo Atto
With faith in Christ and in the hope of the resurrection, we announce the falling asleep in the Lord of the Very Reverend Father Abbot Eliyo Atto of the Mor Ephrem Monastery. He departed this earthly life on Wednesday 08 April 2026 at the Mor Ephrem Monastery in Glane, The Netherlands.
Father Abbot Eliyo was born in 1940 to Atto and Zero Dbe Misqo in the village of Mzizah in Tur ‘Abdin, the historic heartland of Syriac Christianity in southeastern Anatolia (Turkey). From a young age, he immersed himself in the Syriac language and the rich heritage of the Church Fathers. In 1967, following his late sister Seyde Atto († 10 May 2020), he entered the monastic community of Mor Gabriel Monastery. After his formation there and a period of study at the Mor Ephrem Theological Seminary in Atchaneh (Lebanon), he served with devotion at the Syriac Orthodox Monastery of Saint Mark in Jerusalem (1977–1979).
At the invitation of the late Archbishop Mor Julius Yeshu‘ Çiçek of blessed memory, he helped build the first Syriac Orthodox community in the Netherlands—first at Mor Yuhanon Church in Hengelo, and from 1981 at the Mor Ephrem Monastery in Glane. There he served faithfully as monk and priest before becoming an abbot in 1994. After Archbishop Çiçek had acquired Mor Augin Monastery in Arth-Goldau, Switzerland, in 1996, Abbot Eliyo served there for 1.5 years before returning to Mor Ephrem Monastery in 1998.
His openness to distant lands and peoples enabled him to both give and receive abundant love. He consistently sought the good with a radiant spirit, remaining kind and cheerful even amid trials. Children especially cherished him as the monk who delighted in sharing small gifts. During his charitable journeys to India, he was deeply moved by the quiet spirituality of the faithful.
Adorned with the virtues of monastic life—humility, stillness, obedience, and ceaseless prayer—he lived a life hidden in Christ. As a devoted Syriac scribe and calligrapher, he copied numerous liturgical and biblical texts. His illuminated Syriac Gospel Lectionary remains a lasting testimony to his craftsmanship and love for the sacred tradition of the Syriac Orthodox Church.
