Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:
“When Allah sent His Messenger ﷺ, most of the adherents of the various religions accepted his call, and that of his successors after him, willingly and by their own choice.
He never compelled anyone to accept the religion. Rather, he fought only those who fought him and waged war against him.
As for those who lived peacefully with him and entered into a truce with him, he neither fought them nor compelled them to enter his religion, in obedience to the command of his Lord سبحانه وتعالى, when He says:
‘There is no compulsion in religion. The right way has become distinct from the wrong.’
(Qur’an 2:256)
This is a negation expressed in the sense of a prohibition; that is: ‘Do not compel anyone to accept the religion.’”
