Indonesia Interested in Joining Makkah Joint Defence Agreement

Indonesia has shown interest in joining the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, a trilateral defence framework established by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye. The development could potentially broaden the agreement’s regional reach and add Southeast Asia’s largest Muslim-majority country to the emerging security framework.

The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement was signed in Makkah on August 7, 2026, by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The agreement provides for enhanced defence cooperation and collective deterrence, including a provision that an armed attack against one of the three signatories would be regarded as an attack against all.

Indonesia’s Interest

Indonesia’s interest comes as the Makkah agreement begins moving from a political understanding toward a more institutionalized defence partnership. On August 31, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan agreed to establish a permanent secretariat in Saudi Arabia to support cooperation under the agreement.

Pakistan has also stated that the Makkah Accord is purely defensive, is not directed against any particular country, and remains open to other regional states that are willing to uphold its principles and resolve disputes through peaceful means.

Potential Significance for Indonesia

If Indonesia eventually joins, its participation could give the agreement a stronger Asian and maritime dimension. Indonesia has one of the world’s largest Muslim populations and maintains extensive diplomatic, economic and defence relationships across the Middle East and Asia.

Indonesia’s involvement could also create opportunities for greater cooperation in areas such as defence technology, military training, maritime security, defence industries and strategic coordination.

For Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, Indonesia’s potential participation could further expand the network of countries cooperating under the Makkah framework.

A Developing Regional Defence Framework

The agreement is still in its early stages. Its three founding members have begun institutionalizing cooperation, including plans for a Saudi-based secretariat and greater collaboration in defence industries, joint production and technology development.

Indonesia’s reported interest therefore comes at a significant moment as the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement develops from a three-country arrangement into a potentially broader regional security framework.

However, Indonesia’s interest should not be presented as confirmed membership unless Jakarta formally announces that it has decided to join the agreement. At present, the key development is reported interest rather than confirmed accession.

U.S. Approves Potential $5 Billion JDAM-ER Sale to Saudi Arabia

The United States has approved a potential $5 billion Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Saudi Arabia involving thousands of Joint Direct Attack Munition Extended Range (JDAM-ER) guidance kits, general-purpose bombs and related support equipment.

The proposed package is aimed at strengthening Saudi Arabia’s precision-strike capabilities by providing additional guidance systems that can improve the accuracy and range of compatible aerial munitions.

Under the proposed sale, Saudi Arabia would receive 10,004 JDAM-ER guidance kits along with associated bombs and support. Boeing would serve as the principal contractor for the package.

What the Package Includes

The proposed deal includes 5,004 KMU-572 tail guidance kits paired with 500-pound BLU-111 bombs. It also covers 5,000 KMU-556 guidance kits and 2,000-pound BLU-117 bombs.

JDAM-ER technology converts conventional bombs into more capable precision-guided weapons by adding guidance and extended-range capabilities. This allows aircraft to engage targets with greater accuracy while providing additional operational flexibility.

Boost to Saudi Precision-Strike Capabilities

The proposed sale would give Saudi Arabia access to a substantial number of additional precision-guidance systems and compatible munitions. This could enhance the Royal Saudi Air Force’s ability to conduct precision air operations and expand its existing strike capabilities.

The package also includes related equipment, services and logistical support necessary for the integration and operation of the systems.

Broader U.S.-Saudi Defense Cooperation

The proposed $5 billion sale represents another major element of U.S.-Saudi defense cooperation. The United States has long supplied Saudi Arabia with aircraft, weapons, air-defense systems and other military equipment.

If finalized, the agreement would further deepen defense ties between Washington and Riyadh while supporting Saudi Arabia’s efforts to modernize and expand its precision-strike capabilities.

Note: The approval represents a potential Foreign Military Sale; it is not, by itself, confirmation that the entire package has been delivered or that the final purchase has been completed.

A 17-year-old girl from North Carolina has been charged with helping in the May 18 shooting at a mosque in San Diego, California, in which three people were killed.
A grand jury in North Carolina accused the girl of helping the attack by recording and sharing a live video of the shooting.
Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill said officials decided to charge her under North Carolina state law because she can be tried as an adult there.
If she is found guilty, she could face life in prison without parole under North Carolina law. Federal charges, on the other hand, could result in a sentence of around three to four years.
