God's righteousness apart from our works can be found in the story of the thief on the cross. Despite his life of wrongdoing, this man found himself crucified alongside Jesus. In his final moments, he acknowledged Jesus as Lord and pleaded, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom" (Luke 23:42, NIV).

In response, Jesus assured him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43, NIV). This powerful moment demonstrates the incomparable righteousness of God. The thief did not have the opportunity to perform good deeds or earn salvation through his actions. Yet, he was granted the gift of eternal life by the righteous and merciful hand of God.

This story serves as a profound reminder that our salvation is not contingent upon our own works, but solely on the righteousness and faithfulness of God. Just as the thief on the cross experienced, we too can rest assured in the promise that God will fulfill His plans for us, for He is faithful to His word. Let us therefore place our trust in Him, knowing that His righteousness transcends our shortcomings and secures our eternal destiny.

Jesus commended the Philadelphians because they had “kept the word of my perseverance” (Rev. 3:10). What is the word of his perseverance and how do we keep it?

The word of his perseverance is the good news that Jesus has persevered and overcome the world. It’s the joyful revelation that because Jesus has done it all, you have nothing to prove.

To keep the word of his perserverance is to continue trusting in Jesus who persevered.

Some twist our Savior’s beautiful words into a Christian fitness test. They say you have to persevere and endure to be saved. You have to keep Christ’s commands and maintain an erect and noble bearing under pressure.

Fail to persevere and you risk punishment, even damnation.

No, no, no. We are not kept from the hour of testing because we endure; we are kept because Christ has endured.

To keep his word (Rev. 3:8) or keep his deeds (Rev. 2:26) or keep his faith (Rev. 2:13) or keep the word of his perseverance (Rev. 3:10) is to believe in Jesus and his finished work. It’s guarding the truth, continuing in the faith, or continuing in the grace of God, and staying settled on the rock.

It is refusing to be tempted into the dead works of religion and unbelief.

THE BROTHERS OF JOSEPH

Genesis 50:15-17
[15]When Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, If Joseph hated us, and made us up for all the evil that we have done unto him!
[16]And they said unto Joseph, Thy father gave this commandment before he died:
[17]So shall you speak to Joseph: Oh! Forgive your brothers the trespasses and their sin, for they have done you wrong! Now forgive the sin of servants of thy father's God! Joseph wept when he heard these words.

Indeed, having done Joseph wrong and thereafter discovered that Joseph was not dead, Joseph's brothers had no peace anymore, so Joseph made them know that it was the will of God that he was sold and brought to Egypt, for it was for their own good, to save their lives by great deliverance (Gn 45). So with these words, Joseph was telling them openly that he had no problem with them, that he had already forgiven them long ago, and Manassah is the proof, because Manassah means: God has made me forget all my troubles and all my father's house (Gn 41:51).

Sadly, Joseph's brothers continued to live under guilt. Reason why their insurance was based on Jacob. They thought because of Jacob, Joseph wasn't going to make them back for all the wrong they did!

When man has sinned and disobeyed the word of God, he is under the wrath of God. So in his heart he thinks that his "good works", his tithes and gifts, his life of discipline, his devotion to God's work, his efforts to flee from sin will be able to pacify God's wrath upon him and make him find favor before God. Just like the brothers of Joseph. For them, their assurance was upon the life of Jacob, but for many, it is based on their good works and others.

What is your assurance of going to heaven?

Joseph is the image of Christ

Joseph's brothers sold Joseph, and Joseph suffered because of their sin. But God rather raised him up and appointed him lord of all Egypt to save the same people who sold him.

We have sinned but the punishment for our sins fell on Christ. Christ suffered for our sins, broken for our iniquities, and on his resurrection on the third day from the dead, he made us righteous and sinless before God. God raised him to perfection and Christ has become the author of eternal salvation for us. This is why God remembers our sins or iniquities anymore. Isaiah 53, Rm 4:25, Heb 5:9

"When Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, If Joseph hated us..." "

There is no if. It's true: God don't hate us anymore. Romans 5:1 certifies it by saying, Therefore, having been justified by faith, WE HAVE PEACE WITH GOD through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Just like Joseph's brothers, many even so called Christians do not believe in this truth.

Instead of believing Joseph's words not to worry about the wrong they had done to him, his brothers continued to live in fear of suffering the penalty for their sin, while relying on Jacob's life. And instead of believing in the eternal remission of sins by the precious blood of Christ, many continue to rely on works and efforts, and therefore, they come before God every day asking for forgiveness of sins already forgiven and God doesn't even remember.

Just as Jacob died and the assurance of Joseph's brethren volatilisa, so shall your works be consumed by the fire of God's judgment, and having no assurance in you anymore, you shall be thrown into the fire of hell, according to it is written: He who does not He who does not believe will be condemned (Mc 16:16). Condemned forever in the pond of fire and suffering.

Reject your thoughts and believe the good news!

Condemnation is the number one symptom of a law-based life for the law is a ministry that condemns (2 Cor 3:9).

Before the cross, Adam’s sin meant condemnation for all men (Rom 5:18). But now there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus (Rom 8:1).

Before the cross, God held us responsible for our sins and not even sacrifices could clear a guilty conscience (Lev 5:17; Heb 9:9). There’s only one thing guaranteed to clear a guilty conscience and that is the blood of Jesus (Heb 10:22).

A mind bewitched by law refuses to believe what Jesus has done and remains under condemnation. But a mind captivated by his grace sees the cross and the empty tomb and responds with “Thank you, Jesus!”

By God’s perfect standard, all of us are unworthy, all of us fall short. Yet God qualifies the worst of us and makes us his beloved sons. Not one of us deserves this. That’s why it’s called grace.

The sign of Jonah was Jesus rising from the dead after three days (Matt. 12:39-40). But there’s more to the sign of Jonah than this.

- Jonah spent three and nights days in the belly of a fish (Jonah 1:17); Jesus spent three days and nights in the belly of the earth

- Jonah, as good as dead, rose from the depths (Jonah 2:10); Jesus rose from the dead

- After he rose, Jonah preached for 40 days (Jonah 3:4); after he rose, Jesus preached for 40 days (Acts 1:3)

- Jonah was sent to a city known for its wickedness (Jonah 1:2); Jesus was sent to a city that killed the prophets (Matt. 23:37) and killed him

- Jonah, understood something of the grace (hesed) of God (Jonah 2:8, 4:2); Jesus came from the Father full of grace (John 1:14)

- After 40 days of Jonah’s preaching, there was an outbreak of divine compassion or grace (Jonah 4:11); after 40 days of Jesus’ preaching, there was an outbreak of the Holy Spirit, a.k.a. the Spirit of Grace (Acts 2:2)

- When the people of Nineveh heard the message, they were cut to the heart and repented (Jonah 3:5); when the people of Jerusalem heard the message, they were cut to the heart and repented (Acts 2:37)

The stories of Jonah and Jesus reveal what can happen when the grace of compassionate God comes to a city full of sinners. Nineveh and Jerusalem deserved judgment, but both were overturned by the gospel of grace that comes through Jesus.
