Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna with their four-month-old Grand Duchess Olga, in March 1896. Her parents were overjoyed and insisted that they were not disappointed that their first child was not a boy. When the Tsar was congratulated by the court chamberlain, Nicholas declared, "I am glad that our child is a girl. Had it been a boy he would have belonged to the people, being a girl she belongs to us."

Nicholas II and family in a formal photograph taken for the occasion of Tsarevich Alexei's Christening in Peterhof Palace (September 3, 1904). Among his godparents were his paternal grandmother, Empress Maria Feodorovna, his great-uncle, Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich; his oldest sister, Grand Duchess Olga; his paternal great-grandfather King Christian IX of Denmark; his mother's maternal uncle, King Edward VII of the United Kingdom, his maternal uncle, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine, and his mother's first cousin, Wilhelm II, German Emperor. Alexei's birth was greeted with widespread joy, because he was the first son the Tsar had had after four daughters.

Nicholas II is wearing the uniform of the Colonel-in-chief of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards -he was appointed the first colonel-in-chief of the 2nd Dragoons in 1894-. Queen Victoria, Empress Alexandra's grandmother, met her goddaughter Olga for the first time and declared "the baby is magnificent."
