Ash Wednesday is February 18th!
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the penitential season of Lent. You may not know it, but if you are a Catholic living (even temporarily) in Poland, you are under the authority of the Polish bishops. This means that we all need to obey the rules for fasting and abstinence as set forth by the bishops of Poland, even if the rules are different in our home countries.
This Sunday's bulletin has an article about the Precepts of the Church which includes the rules about fasting and abstinence.
You can also read about Fasting and Abstinence in Lent on our website here: https://www.pastoralcentre.pl/index.php/observing-lent/
A more general article about Being a Catholic in Poland includes the Holy Days of Obligation in Poland and the difference between rules for Fasting and Abstinence in Poland compared to other places (especially the US, where the rules are definitely different!).
You can check that article here: https://www.pastoralcentre.pl/index.php/being-catholic-in-poland/
Ash Wednesday itself is a day of fasting and abstinence, so be sure to get the information you need in order to observe Ash Wednesday and Lent correctly.

Sunday, 18 January: Traditional Polish Opłatek sharing and Christmas Carols at our Social Hour

Opłatki are embossed wafers that taste like communion wafers, but are not, of course, consecrated hosts. Sharing Opłatki is a lovely Polish custom on Wigilia (Christmas Eve). It is also customary for other groups - colleagues, friends, church groups - to share Opłatki at celebrations in the weeks after Christmas.

It starts with recalling the Nativity of Jesus, and continues with participants breaking off a piece of another person's wafer and offering the person good wishes for the coming year. Then the exchange is reversed - a kind of 'breaking bread' ceremony. You can read all about it on our website: https://www.pastoralcentre.pl/index.php/oplatki/

At the social hour, we'll have printed versions of the readings that you can take home afterwards if you want to share Opłatki with family and friends at home. We'll also have Christmas Carol booklets, and if we remember this year, we'll be able to sing carols together!

Post-Christmas Pastoral (Kolęda) Visits

It is traditional in Poland for priests to visit the homes of their parishioners in the period between Christmas and February 2nd (the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple). Since the Covid-19 pandemic, it has become common for parishes to offer a way for people to sign up for a pastoral visit, rather than just going to every home in the parish and knocking on the door. (In Św Karol parish, this is done by means of slips of paper found in the church before Christmas.) Depending on the practice in your local parish, you may not be informed about the dates for visits on the particular streets of your parish unless you go to your parish and read a poster or look up parish announcements online.

When the priest comes to your house, it is customary to have a few things set up for his visit:
-- a crucifix,
-- a Bible,
-- some candles.
These are usually arranged in a prominent spot, on a white cloth.
It’s optional to have your own holy water and something to sprinkle it, or plain water to be blessed by the priest. If you have this, the priest can use it to bless your home and family.

You can buy a ‘kit’ for Kolęda visits in religious goods shops or online; or you can just look at the pictures to get an idea how to set up a table or other prominent place with your crucifix, Bible and candles, usually arranged on a white cloth. Here’s a link to a shop with pictures: https://www.ksiegarniaswpawla.pl/zestawy-koledowe.html Such a kit can also be used whenever a priest visits your home to bless it, or when visiting the sick or bringing Holy Communion to a dying person at home. You can also use the elements of such a kit as a kind of altar for personal or family prayer.

If you live in the south of the city (Krzyki, Grabiszynska areas), we highly recommend the religious goods shop where the parish buys its supplies. Konkordia is family-owned and operated out of the family home (quite close to Carrefour and the Borek shopping center, a short walk from the swimming pool at the Modlińska bus stop in Racławicka street). Konkordia has better prices than the Cathedral shop or other religious-goods shops in the city. (You will often see priests shopping there – even priests who work at the Cathedral.) A young man working there also speaks English, which is a big help. Here’s a link to find directions: https://g.co/kgs/1Jw3G9b Be aware that they sell on a cash-only basis, and take real money with you if you intend to buy anything at Konkordia.

On January 6th, people who attend the English Mass will be able to take home a paper that has prayers and a procedure for you to bless your own home instead of having a visit from the priest. At the end of the visit, it is customary for the priest to mark your door using blessed chalk. Blessed chalk is usually available from churches on January 6th (a donation is customary). You can read about this practice here: https://culture.pl/en/article/why-do-poles-write-kmb-on-their-doors You can use the paper provided at the English Mass to use the blessed chalk and mark your own door.

It is customary to make a donation to the parish during Kolęda visits. This is done by enclosing your donation in a sealed envelope. There is no standard donation; it is voluntary (not obligatory; if you cannot afford a donation, you can still invite the priest! Do not let a lack of money stop you from having this visit.) The amount is at the discretion of the householder. You don’t put your name on the donation; it is anonymous. No one will know how much you donate.

If you are visited by a priest from your local parish, the traditional procedures will be expected: having a white cloth with a crucifix, Bible and candles; possibly having your own holy water and something to sprinkle it with; a donation in an envelope; a donation (in coin) for any altar-servers who accompany the priest. The priest may register you as a member of the parish during the visit (if you are not already registered), asking you the names and ages of members of the household, if they have all the sacraments they should have, and if there is anything the family needs from the parish. Children may be asked questions about their understanding of their religious formation as well. Also, typically these visits last about 15 minutes, as the priest usually has many visits to make in an evening (after all his regular parish duties are done). Kolęda visits may be a good time to get the priest’s contact details and invite him for a further visit, but it is usually NOT possible for a priest to have a meal or tea, etc., as he has many people to visit in each place, and is usually walking from flat to flat, possibly until rather late in the evening.

4 January
Karla and Julien and their family are hosting the image of Our Lady of Grace this week. May the intercession of our Lady bring forth a shower of graces for them and their extended families. Amen. Alleluia!

The Men of St Joseph had their first meeting of 2026 this week. Men! It's not too late to up your game as a Christian man. You can still join the Men of St Joseph and attend their meetings every month.

Don't forget that we will start our Marriage Course for 2026 in February, if we have enough couples to run the course. Engaged couples need to sign up before January 31st. Most years, people don't sign up before the course begins and then expect us to let them join after two or three weeks of the course, which is impossible. So if you know any English-speaking engaged couples, please encourage them to hurry up and sign up for the marriage course. The course in February-March is the ONLY time we will have the course in 2026.

Pastoral Centre to Paris! Taizé Meeting, 2025

Ming and Stefanus from our Pastoral Centre community travelled to Paris to take part in the European Taizé meeting there, making a new friend along the way and being met by our Lua, who is a veteran of six European Taizé meetings himself.

The next Taizé Youth Meeting will run from 28 December 2026 until 1 January 2027 Lódź, Poland. It's open to young people 18-35 years old. Even if you're waiting for a visa and can't leave Poland, you can attend the next Taizé Youth Meeting, where you are likely to meet people from all over the world - including your home country.

Have a look at the pictures to see what a Taizé Youth Meeting is like. Connect with Lua if you'd like to explore Taizé prayer meetings in Wrocław or learn more about the Taizé community in France. And of course catch Stefanus or Ming after Mass or at one of our events to hear their stories of the Taizé Youth Meeting in Paris.

Huge thanks to Lua for preparing the photos as well as details of every aspect of the Taizé Youth Meeting!
