'The 27th night of Ramadan is the night an illiterate man in a cave was commanded to read—and with that, set off the single most significant event in the history of all existence.
It’s the event for which the universe was willed into being. It’s the moment for which every atom and every planet and every speck of dust was brought into existence. God created everything so that Muhammed ibn Abdullah could become The Messenger of God, on him are God’s blessings and peace.
And this earth shattering, time stopping, destiny defining event started with one word.
What did God send His angel to say? IQra. Read.
The thoughtful sensitive man in the cave was terrified as the powerful presence embraced him so firmly that he thought he’d be crushed.
“I cannot read” he pleaded.
“Read.” Again the crushing embrace that nearly stopped his breath. The restriction of not being able. Of not having the ability to do what is being demanded. Of not knowing how. Of not seeing the path.
“I cannot read” more desperately now. He wished with all his being in that moment that he could comply, that he could obey this overwhelming force that had filled his solitude. But he could not. He did not have the ability to read.
‘Read in (and with and by) the name of your Lord that created..”
It was only then that his restriction expanded, that his sense of helplessness dissolved. Not alone. But with God. Read in His Name. The Magestic, The True, The All Powerful. The One Who Created .
‘Created humans from a thing that clings..’
Our origin is in a state of clinging from the womb, the rahm, the Rahmah of Allah. We are all just clinging to God’s infinite Compassion with every breath. No power is from us. We have no ability from ourselves. We are all illiterate to the reality of our lives except those who read in His name.
Tonight and every night let us read in the name of Our Lord. Read the signs of God in the creation. In our lives. In all that occurs. Let us read in our Lord’s name when we feel we cannot do it. When we feel helpless. When we feel alone. Let us recognize our dependence as clinging creatures to God’s Merciful Majesty and let this reality dissipate our self doubt'
