MEMORIAL OF SAINT ROSE OF LIMA |
Secondary Patroness of the Philippines

Historians remember St. Rose of Lima for her piety and chastity. Born in 1586 in Lima, Peru to Spanish colonists, and named Isabel Flores de Olivia, she was exceptionally beautiful.

Her beauty was so great that she was nicknamed "Rose," a name that remains with her to this day. According to legend, a servant had a vision where her face turned into a rose. At her confirmation in 1597, she officially took the name of Rose.

From an early age, Rose wanted to become a nun. She often prayed and fasted in secret. She performed secret penances, some of which were painful and severe. She performed daily adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and took daily communion.

As a young woman, her beauty began to attract suitors. To deter these men, St. Rose marred her face, rubbing it with pepper to make it blister. She cropped her hair short.

Her parents opposed her plan to take a vow of chastity. This resulted in a clash of wills, because her parents wanted her to marry. Her father eventually relented and gave her a room to herself.

St. Rose kept herself cloistered in her room, spending long periods in prayer. It was said she slept only two hours per night so as to have more time for prayer.

She quit eating meat altogether, an extreme dietary restriction for that time.

When she turned 20, she was permitted to join the Third Order of St. Dominic. She continued a life of extreme prayer, fasting and penance. On one occasion she burned her hands as a self-imposed act of penance.

She was known to wear a heavy silver crown, with spikes that could pierce her flesh. The spikes reminded her of the Crown of Thorns. At one point, one of the spikes become so lodged in her skull that the crown was removed with great difficulty.

St. Rose died in on August 25, 1617, at the age of 31. According to legend, she accurately predicted the date of her death. Her funeral was a major event attended by all the city's authorities.

Pope Clement IX beatified her in 1667 and Pope Clement X recognized her as a saint, canonizing her in 1671. Her feast day is August 23 around the world, although some countries, like Peru, celebrate her on August 30.

St. Rose is the patroness of embroiderers, gardeners, florists, those who suffer ridicule for their piety, and people who suffer family problems.

TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
August 23, 2026

First Reading:
Isaiah 22:19-23

Thus says the LORD to Shebna, master of the palace:
"I will thrust you from your office
and pull you down from your station.
On that day I will summon my servant
Eliakim, son of Hilkiah;
I will clothe him with your robe,
and gird him with your sash,
and give over to him your authority.
He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
and to the house of Judah.
I will place the key of the House of David on Eliakim's shoulder;
when he opens, no one shall shut,
when he shuts, no one shall open.
I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot,
to be a place of honor for his family."

Responsorial Psalm:
"Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands."
Psalm 138:1-2, 2-3, 6, 8

Second Reading:
Romans 11:33-36

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!
How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways!
For who has known the mind of the Lord
or who has been his counselor?
Or who has given the Lord anything
that he may be repaid?
For from him and through him and for him are all things.
To him be glory forever. Amen.

Alleluia:
Matthew 16:18

You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

Gospel:
Matthew 16:13-20

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and
he asked his disciples,
"Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"
They replied, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
Simon Peter said in reply,
"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Jesus said to him in reply,
"Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.
For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
And so I say to you, you are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
Then he strictly ordered his disciples
to tell no one that he was the Christ.

OVERCOMING THE GATES OF HELL | Today is the 21st Sunday in Ordinary time, In the Gospel, Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, โ€œWho do people say that the Son of Man is?โ€ They replied, โ€œSome say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.โ€ He said to them, โ€œBut who do you say that I am?โ€ Simon Peter said in reply, โ€œYou are the Christ, the Son of the living God.โ€

Reflect today on the significance of the papacy. Even now, in the successor of Saint Peter, the words of Simon continue to echo throughout the world: โ€œYou are the Christ, the Son of the living God.โ€ This is the popeโ€™s first and most important dutyโ€”to bear witness to Christ, the Son of God. Despite the personal weaknesses of some popes and the saintliness of others, it is Jesus who established Peter and his successors as the visible foundation of the Church. Pray for the Holy Father, and trust in the timeless witness of every pope since that first moment in Caesarea Philippiโ€”a witness upheld not by human strength, but by Christโ€™s own promise. To profess faith in the papacy is to profess faith in the One who instituted it and endowed it with His divine authority.

MEMORIAL OF THE QUEENSHIP OF MARY |
Patroness of Barangay Tictapul

The Memorial of the Queenship of Mary, celebrated every year on August 22nd, honors the Blessed Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth. This feast was established by Pope Pius XII in 1954 through the encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam (โ€œTo the Queen of Heavenโ€), affirming the ancient and profound belief of the Church that Mary, by her singular role in salvation history, shares uniquely in the kingship of her Son, Jesus Christ.

This celebration falls eight days after the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, signifying the close relationship between Maryโ€™s glorification in heaven and her queenship. Just as Christ is exalted as King of Kings following His Resurrection and Ascension, Mary, assumed body and soul into heaven, is crowned as Queen, seated beside her Son in glory.

The foundation of this belief is found in Sacred Scripture. The angel Gabriel proclaims at the Annunciation that Maryโ€™s Son, Jesus, will inherit โ€œthe throne of Davidโ€ and โ€œHis kingdom will have no endโ€ (Luke 1:32โ€“33). As the Mother of the eternal King, Mary participates in His reign, not as a rival, but as a loving mother who intercedes, guides, and protects her children. In biblical tradition, the Queen Mother (Gebirah) in Israel held a place of honor beside the king, advocating for the people. Likewise, Mary, the Mother of Christ the King, intercedes for us as our heavenly Queen and Mother of Mercy.

Maryโ€™s queenship is not about worldly power or grandeur but about service, humility, and maternal love. She is crowned in glory because she fully embraced Godโ€™s will, saying โ€œyesโ€ to His plan of salvation. Her queenship is a sign of hope for all believers, reminding us of our ultimate destiny to reign with Christ in eternal life.

Prayer to Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth

O Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth,
you are crowned with glory by your Son,
the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Teach us to follow your example of faith, humility, and obedience,
that we may serve Christ with joyful hearts.

Intercede for us, O loving Mother,
that we may remain steadfast in trials,
faithful in love, and hopeful in the promise of eternal life.
Lead us closer to Jesus, your Son,
so that one day we may share in His heavenly kingdom,
where you reign as our Queen and Mother.

Mary, Queen of Heaven, pray for us!
