I have this 12-year old girl in my weekend class with Al-Qur’an Academy. Last weekend, we discussed about what violates Tawhiid and their effect on it. Two of those are Shirk Al-Akbar and Shirk Al-Asghar.

Last night, I received incessant messages from this young fella Allahumma baarik laha talking about an incident she had earlier which reminded her of our topic. She was afraid that she was guilty of Shirk Al-Akbar and that she might not be Muslim anymore.

I explained the topic to her again and its relevance to her question until she was satisfied.

But 🥹 The innocence and spiritual sensitivity of a child 🥹

It really pays to educate our children, even with topics which we think are “too advanced” or “too difficult” for them to digest. We might as well accept the challenge of answering their questions and clarifications instead of shunning them away from the truth. We want children who grow to succeed both in dunya and deen, right? If we started their dunya journey off as early as 4 years old in nursery, then what’s stopping us from doing the same with our deen?

Their minds are still so pure that whatever we introduce to them first and consistently becomes their normal. So, parents and guardians must really bring them well. Hopefully, Islamic education is a major part of it.

WHY ARE WE NOT SEEKING KNOWLEDGE?

The necessity for knowledge is absolute
For this world and the Hereafter, it is the truth,
But while we persistently go to school since we were a young child,
Why is Islamic education not being equally prioritized?

Most of us say that being able to perform salah is already enough
To utter the shahada gets the job done,
Whatever we cannot do, "Allah will understand"
Because after all, Allah is "Ar-Rahman".

Most of us don't see the value of learning Arabic
Because the Qur'an is transcribed and translated already into English,
We also refuse to learn how to distinguish the fake from the fact
Because there is just someone whom we can ask.

Muslims love to dream of getting in to Jannah
To be united with our love ones there, including the Rasul and meet Allah,
Yet we refuse to take the path that makes getting into Jannah easy
We refuse to understand the matter that grants us His favor and mercy.

Muslims are often troubled with the nature of imaan
Of how it's never steady; it always go up then down,
Yet we refuse to cultivate the seeds from which imaan blooms
We refuse to feed our soul with its energy food.

Muslims desire to invest in what is lasting
In good deeds that weigh heavy on the Day of Accounting,
Yet we don't invest on what will last until the Hereafter;
We refuse to learn our deen and teach it to others.

Seeking knowledge is a noble act of ibadah
It shows how much we are in love and interested to know more about Allah,
It shows that being Muslims is passion, not just fashion
That being Muslims is not just a name, it's our identity as persons.

Muslims without knowledge are like lost travelers
We may enjoy the journey, until we forget why we're here,
But when we eventually become tired and hope that the journey will soon be over,
We arrive at a destination that will fuel us with nothing but regret and fear.

So even when the path of knowledge is long and tedious
We still must take it if we want to be pious,
At the end of the day, knowledge is what makes us serve our purpose:
To worship Allah and not be amongst those who are at loss.

How Can You Not Fall in Love with Arabic?

How can you not fall in love with Arabic
When it's the language that the Qur'an was revealed in,
When it's the language that your Prophet spoke
And so was the rest of his pious folks?

How can you be complacent with translations
When no other language can justly make the exact explanation,
How can you be satisfied with transliterations
When Arabic is unique in its enunciation?

You say you want to be closer to Allah
Yet, you don't give due regard to the source of Shari'ah,
You wish to make the Qur'an the spring of your heart
Yet in understanding it, you don't do your part.

The Arabic language is not just for the Arabs
In the same way that Islam not just for them,
The Arabic language is for those who truly seek Allah's love
By making the attempt to grasp what is in His direct statements
As well as in the words, actions, and prohibitions of His last prophet.

The understanding of the deen is a favor
That Allah grants to only but a few Muslims,
Mastering a foreign language may take a forevermore
But so what, if the journey itself is already a blessing?

So let this crooked tongue of mine tire
Let this out-of-tune voice be hoarse,
Let this limited brain of mine ache
So long it's for the sake of earning Allah's favor.

For indeed, Allah's pleasure can never be achieved
By laziness, entertainment, or a good sleep,
Jannah can only be attained
By those whom upon pious actions have been drained.
