SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST | May 24, 2026

The Solemnity of Pentecost is celebrated fifty days after Easter. It is the feast on which we remember the gift of the Holy Spirit that overturns the confusion of Babel (see Gn. 11:9). In Jesus, who died, rose and ascended into Heaven, the peoples once again understand each other through one sole language, the language of love.

During the first half of the 3rd century, Tertullian and Origen were already speaking of Pentecost as a Feast that followed the Ascension. As the pilgrim Egeria attests, Pentecost was a Feast that was already celebrated in Jerusalem in the 4th century. It proposed the theme of the renewal that the coming of the Spirit works in the hearts of men and women.

Pentecost has its roots in the Feast of Weeks celebrated by the Jewish people. This was an annual agricultural festival surrounding the first fruits of the spring harvest and celebrated the year’s harvest. Later, it was connected with the revelation of God to Moses, the Ten Commandments. Then, for Christians, it would become the moment in which Christ, having returned to the glory of the Father, would make himself present in the hearts of men and women through His Spirit, the law given by God written in their hearts: “The new and definitive Covenant is no longer founded on a law that is written on two stone tablets, but on the action of the Spirit of God which makes all things new and is etched on hearts of flesh” (Pope Francis, General Audience, 19 June 2019).

With Pentecost, the Church was born and her evangelizing mission began.

SACERDOTAL ORDINATION ANNIVERSARY
May 23, 2026

The Archdiocese of Zamboanga extends its greetings and prayers on the occasion of the Anniversary of the Ordination to the Presbyterate of Rev. Fr. Reynaldo Francisco, Rev. Fr. Rene Rivero, Rev. Fr. Oscarlito Bisnar, Jr., and Rev. Fr. Mark Ivan Monjardin.

Ad multos annos, padres!

Let us remember their intentions and we pray for these priests as we say:

O Jesus, our great High Priest, hear our humble prayers on behalf of your priests, Rev. Fr. Rey, Rev. Fr. Rene, Rev. Fr. Don-Don, and Rev. Fr. Ivan. Give them a deep faith, a bright and firm hope, and a burning love, which will ever increase in the course of their priestly life.

In their loneliness, comfort them; In their sorrows, strengthen them;
In their frustrations, point out to them that it is through suffering that the soul is purified; and show them that they are needed by the Church, needed by souls, needed for the work of redemption.

O loving Mother Mary, Mother of Priests, take to your heart your sons who is close to you because of their priestly ordination, and because of the power which they received to carry on the work of Christ in a world which needs them so much.

Be their comfort, be their joy, be their strength, and especially help them to live and to defend the ideals of consecrated celibacy.

Amen.

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD
Seventh Sunday of Easter | May 17

First Reading:
Acts 1:1-11

In the first book, Theophilus,
I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught
until the day he was taken up,
after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit
to the apostles whom he had chosen.
He presented himself alive to them
by many proofs after he had suffered,
appearing to them during forty days
and speaking about the kingdom of God.
While meeting with them,
he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem,
but to wait for “the promise of the Father
about which you have heard me speak;
for John baptized with water,
but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

When they had gathered together they asked him,
“Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons
that the Father has established by his own authority.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
throughout Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth.”
When he had said this, as they were looking on,
he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.
While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going,
suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them.
They said, “Men of Galilee,
why are you standing there looking at the sky?
This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven
will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”

Responsorial Psalm:
"God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord."
Psalm 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9

Second Reading:
Ephesians 1:17-23

Brothers and sisters:
May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,
give you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation
resulting in knowledge of him.
May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened,
that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call,
what are the riches of glory
in his inheritance among the holy ones,
and what is the surpassing greatness of his power
for us who believe,
in accord with the exercise of his great might,
which he worked in Christ,
raising him from the dead
and seating him at his right hand in the heavens,
far above every principality, authority, power, and dominion,
and every name that is named
not only in this age but also in the one to come.
And he put all things beneath his feet
and gave him as head over all things to the church,
which is his body,
the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way.

Gospel:
Matthew 28:16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee,
to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.
When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.
Then Jesus approached and said to them,
“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

60TH WORLD COMMUNICATIONS SUNDAY

On the Seventh Sunday of Easter, the Church also celebrates the World Day of Social Communications. This celebration was instituted by Pope Paul VI in 1967 following the Second Vatican Council's decree Inter Mirifica. This year's theme is "Preserving human voices and faces", highlighting the responsibility of communicators to uphold truth and authentic relationships in a rapidly evolving digital world shaped by modern media.

In Pope Leo XIV's message for this year's celebration, he highlighted that technology must always serve the human person and never replace genuine human encounter. He also emphasizes that every face and voice reflects the sacred dignity of the person created in the image of God. The Holy Father calls communicators, especially the youth, to promote truth, critical thinking, ethical responsibility, and compassionate dialogue in today's digital age, ensuring that communication continues to build communion rather than division.

PAROCHIAL FEAST OF OUR LADY OF PEACE AND GOOD VOYAGE | May 16

The image of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage is also known as the Virgin of Antipolo. It is a 17th century Roman Catholic image of the Blessed Virgin Mary and one of the most celebrated images in the Philippines, gaining devotees since the mid-19th century, having been mentioned by Jose Rizal in his writings.

In 1626, Governor-General Juan Niño de Tabora brought the image from Mexico through the galleon El Almirante. His safe voyage across the Pacific Ocean was attributed to the image, which was given the title of “Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage”.
