Statement of Sympathy to the Whole Ateneo De Zamboanga University Community

Juntos en Dolor, Firmes en Fe, Unidos por Justicia
(One in Grief, Steadfast in Faith, United for Justice)

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Zamboanga stands in solidarity with the Jesuit community, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University family, and all those affected by the tragic shooting incident.

We join the entire ADZU community in profound grief over the loss of young lives and in deep concern for those who have been wounded, traumatized, and deeply affected by this tragedy.

We assure the learners, teachers, personnel, families, and the entire academic community of our prayers, presence, and solidarity as we journey toward healing and recovery. In this painful moment, may no one feel alone. The Catholic faithful of Zamboanga are one with you.

We continue to believe in the power of faith formation and catechesis in nurturing the hearts and minds of our young people and teachers, forming communities rooted in compassion, respect, dialogue, responsibility, and peace. Our schools must remain safe spaces—places where young people can learn, grow, discover their dignity, and become instruments of peace.

As we mourn, we also affirm our commitment to truth, justice, and accountability. The Catholic faithful stand with the victims and their families in seeking a thorough investigation and appropriate accountability. We pray that the authorities may be guided by wisdom, fairness, courage, and a sincere commitment to justice.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”— Psalm 34:18

May the Lord embrace those who mourn, comfort those who are afraid, heal those who are wounded, and strengthen those who carry the weight of this tragedy. May He grant eternal rest to those who have died and consolation and strength to their families.

In this moment of sorrow, we choose prayer over fear, compassion over condemnation, truth over speculation, and justice over vengeance.

We grieve with you. We pray with you. We stand with you.We walk with you toward healing, justice, and peace.

EPISCOPAL ORDINATION ANNIVERSARY
Most Reverend Julius S. Tonel, D.D.
Archbishop of Zamboanga

The Archdiocese of Zamboanga cordially greets His Excellency, the Most Reverend Julius S. Tonel, Archbishop of Zamboanga, as he celebrates his 18th Episcopal Ordination Anniversary today.

Let us pray.

O God, eternal shepherd of the faithful, who tend your Church in countless ways
and rule over her in love, grant we pray, that Julius, your servant, whom you have set over your people, may preside in the place of Christ over the flock whose shepherd he is, and be faithful as a teacher of doctrine, a Priest of sacred worship
and as one who serves them by governing.

Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Ad multos annos Archbishop Joy!

The Social Communications Ministry of the Catholic Church extends its deepest grief and solidarity to all those affected by the distressing shooting incident involving young students in our beloved Zamboanga City.

In times of crisis, our duty as Christians extends beyond our physical places of worship into digital spaces. Social media can be a powerful tool for solidarity, but when used recklessly, it deepens wounds, spreads falsehoods, and inflicts further trauma on innocent lives.

We urgently appeal to the faithful, the youth, and all citizens to exercise utmost prudence and charity online. Before reposting a screenshot, forwarding a message, sharing a name, or repeating a rumor, pause and ask:

Is this verified?
Is it from a credible source?
Is it necessary to share?
Could it cause further fear, harm, or pain?

Fact-checking does not mean ignoring what happened. It means choosing to understand the situation based on facts rather than assumptions. Let us wait for verified statements from proper authorities and official sources. Not every post, screenshot, eyewitness account, or message circulating online tells the complete story, and an unverified claim can easily turn into harmful misinformation when amplified.

Most importantly, let us allow the authorities to conduct their investigation. Investigations take time, and a delay in answers does not mean answers are not being sought. We do not need to fill the silence with speculation.

We can ask for truth without pointing fingers.
We can seek accountability without spreading hate.
We can remain concerned without becoming careless with information.

As followers of Christ, let us ensure that our digital presence brings comfort rather than chaos, truth rather than speculation, and healing rather than division. Let us guard our words, protect the vulnerable, and remain united in prayer for peace in our city.

Our Lady of the Pillar, intercede for Zamboanga City and protect our children.
