CHURCH NEWS | The Church Appeals to No One but the Truth: Church Speaks on Claims of “Selective Silence"
Amid recurring criticism that the Church “chooses who to call out” or remains silent on certain issues, the Catholic Church reiterates a clear and consistent principle: she does not serve political interests, nor does she align herself with any individual or group.
Rooted in her moral mission and guided by the teachings of the Catholic Church, the Church speaks whenever truth, justice, and the dignity of persons are at stake, whether addressing corruption allegations, irregularities in public funds and infrastructure such as flood control projects, or broader social and moral concerns.
However, whenever clergy or Church representatives speak out against corruption and social injustice, comment sections are often flooded with accusations that the Church is “silent” on other issues, including problems within the Church itself. These claims are frequently repeated as if they were fact, despite being easily disproven through basic verification and accessible records of Church statements and pastoral interventions.
A simple fact-check or honest review of Church pronouncements would show that the accusation of “selective silence” does not hold. While the Church does not deny the reality of internal challenges and continues to address them within her own structures of reform and accountability, it is incorrect to claim that she is silent when she consistently speaks on both internal and societal concerns.
What is often overlooked is that engagement requires attention: public statements are widely available, but not always read in full context. As a result, selective perception can create the impression of silence where there is, in fact, a continuous moral voice.
“The Church appeals to no one but the truth,” a pastoral reflection emphasizes. “She speaks not to take sides, but to call every side back to conscience.”
