A DEFINITION AND PURPOSE OF THE LAW. Romans 3:19-20.
 What is the Law? The law is the Torah (the Pentateuch and, by extension, the Old Testament).
 What is the purpose of the law?
— It reveals sin and man’s guilt before God.
— There is no way it can remove guilt or making us righteous before God.
— It shows us the way to obtain forgiveness (for example: the sacrifice rites in the sanctuary).
— It shows God’s character.
B GOD’S JUSTICE. Romans 3:21-23. (see the chart in the next page)
 Only the righteous—those who obey the law perfectly—can be accepted by God’s righteousness.
— No one of us is righteous nor can become righteous.
 Jesus lived a righteous live. That live is accepted by God.
— When a sinner accepts the sacrifice of Jesus by faith, God accepts Jesus’ perfect life instead of the sinner’s. Then, that sinner is declared righteous.
C JUSTIFIED BY HIS GRACE. Romans 3:24.
 We are justified when we are declared righteous before God.
 The way God has provided to declare us righteous is redemption through the death of Jesus.
 That declaration of righteousness has nothing to do with anything we could do; we don’t deserve it. We receive it only by grace, as a gift from God.
D PROPITIATION. Romans 3:25-27.
 Jesus comes between the sinner and God like that, so the divine righteousness is fulfilled and the sinner is accepted by his faith in Jesus.
 God is righteous, so that is the only way to fulfil divine righteousness and accept the sinner without breaking the law.
E JUSTIFIED BY FAITH. Romans 3:28.
 Deeds have nothing to do with justification, because we can’t do anything to be justified.
 We can only be justified by faith in the expiatory sacrifice of Christ.
 Does justification by faith exempt us from keeping the law?
— Certainly not; because if someone is forgiven, how could he keep sinning?

A CONFLICT OVER THE COVENANT.
 THE OLD COVENANT:
— Great promises: A better life in return for obedience.
Leviticus 18:5.
 THE NEW COVENANT:
— Better promises: Salvation by faith only through Jesus’ blood.
Romans 5:9.
 The Old Covenant was expressed relative to blessings or curses whether the law was observed or not. It was like that because of the hardness of their hearts (Mark 10:5), but they received salvation only by their faith in the Lamb of God, who was going to die for them.
B CONFLICT OVER THE LAW.
 Jewish Christians wanted the Gentile Christians to keep the Law passed on by Moses (and the pharisaic tradition).
 God ordered several kinds of laws in the Old Testament:
— Moral law. For example: The 10 commandments.
— Ceremonial law. For example: Animal sacrifices.
— Civil law. Ejemplo: For example: Don’t modifying the boundaries of fields.
— Health law. For example: Quarantine.
— Various laws. For example: Leaving the leftovers on the fields for the poor.
 Which of those laws must we observe as believers? Why?
C CONFLICT OVER SALVATION.
 The Pharisees thought that salvation could not be gained without observing strictly the law. Acts 15:1.
 In Romans, Paul wanted to make clear that salvation is a free gift that God gives to those who believe in Jesus’ expiatory sacrifice.
D RESOLVING CONFLICTS.
 The conflict over observing the Jewish law and tradition could have destroyed the church, but thanks to the Holy Spirit it was resolved in a wonderful way (Acts 15).
 Although Jewish believers weren’t to impose their rules and traditions on Gentiles, the council wanted to make sure that the Gentiles didn’t do things that would have been deemed offensive to the Jews who were united with them in Jesus.
E AVOIDING COMING CONFLICTS.
 Despite the conclusion of the assembly of Jerusalem, some teachers kept insisting and creating great problems in some churches.
 Paul fought those movements in Galatians and Romans, teaching them to withstand those errors.

IKSYON-BUOD 9: Ang Panawagang Pastoral ni Pablo
Susing Talata.
(Galacia 4:16).
Noon at Ngayon.

06. THE HOLY SPIRIT AND LIVING A HOLY LIFE
A God’s holiness. Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 4:8.
 God is Holy. He is pure, perfect, just, good and he totally shuns evil.
 God’s absolute power and wisdom are governed by His character that only wants good. His Holiness makes that possible.
B Man’s holiness. Hebrews 12:14.
 Holiness is to be more like Jesus every day. We can achieve holiness by the power of the Holy Spirit as we mingle with God in prayer and with His Word. Holiness is the result of contemplating the beauty of Christ’s character.
 Divine holiness is intrinsic to God’s character. Our holiness is a process that goes on for our entire life.
C Achieving holiness. 2 Thessalonians 2:13. 2 Corinthians 3:18.
 We are justified by faith in the blood of Christ. Then, the Holy Spirit begins His sanctifying work in us.
 Holiness comes into conflict with our sinful nature. How can we walk in the Spirit and stop satisfying our own sinful desires (Galatians 5:16-17)?
 We must look unto Jesus and not unto us. He is “the author and finisher of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:2). When we look unto Jesus, He’ll give us strength to live a victorious life.
D The rule of holiness. Romans 7:12.
 How can I know if I’m holy? I’m holy if I reflect God’s character.
 How can I know that I’m reflecting God’s Character? I’m doing so if I fulfill the Law, since the Law is the reflection of His character.
 Let’s study the characteristics of the Law and compare them to God’s character:
— THE LAW: HOLY (Romans 7:12); JUST (Romans 7:12); GOOD (Romans 7:12); LOVE (Romans 13:10)
— GOD: HOLY (Isaiah 6:3); JUST (1 John 1:9); GOOD (Psalm 25:8); LOVE (1 John 4:8)
E Pursuing holiness. Psalm 15.
 Living a holy life is a result of a character that’s been transformed by the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22).
 The Holy Spirit moves us to habits that bring communion with God. He guides us to dedicate time to listen to His voice in prayer and by studying His Word. Those habits create a character in us that leads us to love God and detest sin.
 We must remember that it’s the Spirit’s work that transforms us. It requires our effort and will, but it’s His work, not ours: “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6).

lesson for this coming Sabbath:
The Baptism and Filling of the Holy Spirit
Read for This Week's Study: Mark 1:8; Eph. 5:18; Acts 13:52; Luke 11:8-10; Acts 5:32; Gal. 5:16-26.
Memory Text: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10, NIV).
A The baptism of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 3:11.
 The baptism of John (water) and the baptism of Jesus (Spirit and fire) complement each other. The baptism of the Spirit could come first sometimes.
— Acts 2:38. Pentecost: Repentance  baptism of water  baptism of the Holy Spirit.
— Acts 10:43-48. Cornelius’ house: Repentance  baptism of the Holy Spirit  baptism of water.
 In baptism we are identified with Christ, and Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit so that we can live in His power and proclaim the good news.
 The baptism of the Spirit is an experience that brings the believers together (1 Corinthians 12:13).
 Water does not change anyone, it’s just an external demonstration of our personal atonement with God. The Spirit does change our lives. How has the Holy Spirit transformed your life?
B Living in the Holy Spirit. Acts 13:52.
 The baptism of the Spirit must be a constant experience in our lives. We must be filled with the Holy Spirit every day, we must surrender our will to God and let Him guide us.
C Conditions.
 Repentance (Acts 2:37-38): Feeling sorry about sin and desiring to change our hearts and minds completely.
 Faith (Galatians 3:14): Believing God’s promises and trusting Him.
 Persistence (Luke 11:8-10, 13): Praying persistently to be ready for God’s blessings and to come near Him.
 Obedience (Acts 5:32): Showing our faith by following God’s will.
 Leaving every uncleanliness behind (Judas 18-21): Rejecting sin completely.
D Results. Philippians 2:13.
 When God helps us with fulfilling those requirements, our lives are unavoidably transformed by the Holy Spirit as we are filled by Him.
 God is the One who help us with fulfilling the conditions to receive the Holy Spirit. He also brings the results of a transformed life.
 He will never do that work without our cooperation. We must surrender our will to His will.
“The Spirit illumines our darkness, informs our ignorance, and helps us in our manifold necessities. But the mind must be constantly going out after God. If worldliness is allowed to come in, if we have no desire to pray, no desire to commune with Him who is the source of strength and wisdom, the Spirit will not abide with us…
The religion of Christ means more than the forgiveness of sin; it means that sin is taken away, and that the vacuum is filled with the Spirit. It means that the mind is divinely illumined, that the heart is emptied of self, and filled with the presence of Christ. When this work is done for church members, the church will be a living, working church.”
