Sa napakaraming bansa sa mundo, bukód tanging Pilipinas lámang ang may nakalaang gintong panahon taón-taón upang gunitain, pahalagahan, at alayan ng pagdakila ang wikang Pambansa. Ang gawaing itó ay pinasimulan ni dating Pangulong Ramon Magsaysay noóng 26 Marso 1954 sa bisa ng Proklamasyon Blg. 12 na nagtatadhana sa pagdiriwang ng linggo ng wika tuwing 29 Marso–4 ng Abril bílang pagbibigay parangal sa kaarawan ni Francisco Balagtas na isa sa mga nagbigay prestihiyo sa wikang Tagalog. Subalit makalipas lámang ang mahigit isang taón, noóng 23 Setyembre 1955, sa bisa ng Proklamasyon Blg. 186 ay pinalitan ang petsa ng pagdiriwang ng linggo ng wika tungong 13-19 Agosto bílang pagbibigay-pugay sa kaarawan ni dating Pangulong Manuel L. Quezon na malaki ang naging hirap tungo sa pagkakaroon natin ng Wikang Pambansa.

Ang mga batas na nabanggit ang siyang dahilan kung bakit nakalakihan na nating lahat ang pagdiriwang ng Linggo ng Wika magmula elementarya hanggang kolehiyo na mas pinaigting pa ni dating Pangulong Fidel V. Ramos noóng 1997 sa bisa ng Proklamasyon Blg. 1041 na nagtatakda sa buóng buwan ng Agosto taón-taón bílang Buwan ng Wika kalakip ang tagubilin sa iba’t ibang sangay at tanggapan ng pamahalaan partikular na sa mga paaralan na ipagdiwang ang naturang okasyon sa pamamagitan ng mga gawaing kababakasan ng kalinangan ng lahing Pilipino.
