Observed on the Friday before Palm Sunday, Viernes de Dolores (Friday of Sorrows) marks the beginning of a more intense preparation for Holy Week. This day is dedicated to honoring the deep sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she accompanied her Son, Jesus Christ, on the path toward His Passion.

It invites the faithful to reflect on the Seven Sorrows of Maryโ€”from the prophecy of Simeon to the burial of Jesusโ€”reminding us of a motherโ€™s silent suffering and steadfast faith. As we draw nearer to Holy Week, may this day lead us into deeper prayer, repentance, and a more meaningful participation in the saving mysteries of Christ.

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ANNUNCIATION IS COMING!

March 25 is the Annunciation of the Lordโ€”a sacred moment when heaven touched earth in the most quiet yet powerful way.

On this day, we remember the visit of the Angel Gabriel to the Blessed Virgin Mary, bringing the message that she had been chosen to become the Mother of the Savior. This was not just an announcementโ€”it was an invitation. God, in His humility, waited for Maryโ€™s free โ€œyes.โ€ And with her response, โ€œLet it be done to me according to your word,โ€ the plan of salvation began to unfold in a new and visible way.

The Annunciation teaches us something deeply important: God does not force His will upon us. He invites. He calls. He waits. Maryโ€™s fiat was an act of total surrender, trust, and love. She did not fully understand what lay aheadโ€”the suffering, the sacrifice, the sorrowโ€”but she trusted in Godโ€™s promise. Her yes opened the door for Christ to enter the world.

It is also significant that this feast falls during Lent, a season of repentance and preparation. While Lent calls us to reflect on sin and conversion, the Annunciation reminds us of hope. Before the Cross, there was a โ€œyes.โ€ Before the suffering, there was trust. Before redemption, there was surrender.

In a way, we are all invited to live our own Annunciation. God speaks to us dailyโ€”in prayer, in Scripture, in the quiet movements of our hearts. Like Mary, we are given the choice to respond. Will we say yes, even when it is difficult? Will we trust, even when we do not fully understand?

As Holy Week approaches, the Annunciation becomes even more meaningful. The Child conceived in Maryโ€™s womb is the same Jesus who will suffer, die, and rise again for our salvation. Her yes was not just for a momentโ€”it was a lifelong offering that led her to stand faithfully at the foot of the Cross.

This March 25, let us honor Mary not only with words, but with imitation. Let us say our own โ€œyesโ€ to Godโ€”in our struggles, in our sacrifices, and in our daily lives.

For in every sincere โ€œyesโ€ to God, Christ is born again in our hearts.

Father of love, source of all blessings, help us to pass from our old life of sin to the new life of grace. Prepare us for the glory of your kingdom. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

DEAR, MAMA MARY

I know that today is your Birthday, but I think, the gift is all mine because I have you. โ™ฅ๏ธ Thank you for being a Mother to me. Thank you for your fiat! I will forever love you. Happy Birthday!

Truly yours, a Marian devotee.

HABEMUS PAPAM!

White smoke rises from the Sistine Chapel, announcing that the College of Cardinals has elected a new Pope!

Let us offer fervent prayers of thanksgiving to God, asking the Holy Spirit to grant wisdom, strength, and guidance to our new shepherd as he leads the Universal Church. May Mary, the Blessed Mother, watches over him and the entire Church with her maternal care.

With joy, let us eagerly await the the Holy Father's first appearance on the balcony, where he will be introduced to the world as the 267th successor of St. Peter as the Bishop of Rome.

GOOD FRIDAY IS A DAY OF FASTING & ABSTINENCE

A friendly reminder from your HugotSeminarista family:

The 18th Day of April is Good Friday. As Catholics, we are encouraged to do the following practices: FASTING and ABSTINENCE.

(1) FASTING
- It is a form of penance that involves limiting kinds or amount of food or drink consumption.
- Catholics who are 18-59 years old are eligible to this practice.
- Days of fasting (with abstinence) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
- During fasting, the faithful should only eat 1 regular meal and 2 small meals (should not exceed the main amount of the main meal)
- Fast is broken by eating between meals and by drinks which could be considered food (milk shakes, but not milk).

(2) ABSTINENCE
- It is another form of penance that involves refraining from kinds of food or drink.
- This should be practiced by Catholics who are 14 years old and above (until death).
- During abstinence, the faithful should refrain from eating meat (i.e. flesh and organs of mammals and birds), but may consume fish and shellfish.
- Days of abstinence are Fridays in Lent.

N.B. Some people can be excused from fasting and abstinence. They are:

- persons with disabilities which make it difficult to understand or observe the practice (e.g. people with mental health concerns)
- the sick, frail, pregnant, or nursing women, according to need for meat or nourishment
- manual laborers, according to need
- guests at a meal who cannot excuse themselves without giving great offence or causing enmity
- those in other situations of moral or physical impossibility to observe the penitential discipline

GOOD FRIDAY OF THE LORD'S PASSION

On this day, when 'Christ our passover was sacrificed,' the Church meditates on the passion of her Lord and Spouse, adores the cross, commemorates her origin from the side of Christ asleep on the cross, and intercedes for the salvation of the whole world. On this day, in accordance with ancient tradition, the Church does not celebrate the Eucharist: Holy Communion is distributed to the faithful during the Celebration of the Lord's Passion alone. Good Friday is a day of penance to be observed as of obligation in the whole Church, and indeed through abstinence and fasting. All celebration of the sacraments on this day is strictly prohibited, except for sacraments of Penance and Annointing of the Sick.

GOOD FRIDAY โœ๏ธ

Good Friday, a day of sorrow and remembrance for Christians, is named "Good" because of its religious significance. Christians believe that Jesus's death on the cross was the ultimate sacrifice for humanity's sins, saving mankind from death.
