Tomorrow, the Church joyfully celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. On this sacred day, we profess a central truth of our faith: the child born of Mary is truly God made man. By calling Mary โ€œMother of God,โ€ the Church defends the divinity of Christ and honors the woman who freely said yes to Godโ€™s saving plan.

As the New Year begins, we place our lives under the maternal care of Mary. She leads us always to her Son, teaches us to trust in Godโ€™s will, and intercedes for us as a loving mother. May this solemnity remind us that God has entered human history, not from afar, but through a motherโ€™s womb, to bring us peace, grace, and salvation.

Why does the Church discourage the faithful from practicing superstitious beliefs such as preparing 12 round-shaped fruits, wearing polka dots designed clothes, scattering coins around the house, etc. during New Yearโ€™s Eve?

ANSWER: Because these activities falls under SUPERSTITION, a false belief under the guise of religious faith that makes a person fear a retaliation either on his person, or work, or property, or loved one if not followed. The Catholic Church condemns this as an affront to divine providence and the sovereignty of God over the whole creation.

Catechism of the Catholic Church #2111: SUPERSTITION is the deviation of religious feeling and of the practices this feeling imposes. It can even affect the worship we offer the true God, e.g., when one attributes an importance in some way magical to certain practices otherwise lawful or necessary. To attribute the efficacy of prayers or of sacramental signs to their mere external performance, apart from the interior dispositions that they demand, is to fall into superstition.
