HOMILY BITS | 21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“Jesus is indeed our almighty God, but never forget that He is also our brother who understands our struggles, and our friend who walks with us through them all.”
– Rev. Fr. Denise Carl Calling

In today’s Gospel (Matthew 16:13–20), Jesus asks His disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answers with faith, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” His response reminds us that knowing Jesus is more than simply knowing who He is—it is recognizing Him as the One we can truly trust and follow.

Fr. Carl reminds us that Jesus is not a distant God whom we can only turn to in prayer. He is also our brother who understands what we go through and our friend who stays with us through every struggle. When we feel lost, tired, or uncertain, we can always come to Him knowing that He understands and never leaves us alone.

Sometimes, we may not understand why certain things happen or where God is leading us. But like Peter, we are called to keep choosing faith, to trust even when we cannot see the whole picture. Our relationship with Jesus grows when we allow Him to walk with us not only in our joyful moments, but also in the difficult ones.

As we reflect on today’s Gospel, may we ask ourselves: Who is Jesus to me?

AUG 22 | Memorial, Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a title rooted in her unique role in God’s plan of salvation. As the Mother of Jesus Christ, the King, Mary is honored as Queen—not as a goddess or as equal to God, but as a humble servant who shares in the dignity of her Son and intercedes for His people.

The Church celebrates the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary on August 22, honoring her as the Mother of Christ and the spiritual mother of the faithful. Her queenship is a call to trust, humility, and faithful service to God.

AUG 16 | Feast of San Jacinto De Polonia

The saint Peter Metropolitan Cathedral Joins Tuguegarao City in celebration of the Feast of San Jacinto de Polonia.

As we commemorate the city’s culture and heritage, we also honor the life of our dear patron, whose life is a tapestry of faith, knowledge, and deep love for the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin.

With hearts full of faith and devotion, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, rejoicing in the mystery of Mary being taken body and soul into heavenly glory. In the light of her Assumption, her Magnificat (Luke 1:46–55) takes on a deeper meaning. Mary praises God for His greatness and rejoices in all that He has done for her. Her life reminds us that true greatness is not found in power or status, but in humility, faith, and a heart that trusts in God.

May Mary, our Mother and model of faith, teach us to trust God even when the path ahead is uncertain, to remain faithful in every season, and to humbly say “yes” to His will. May her Magnificat remind us to care for the lowly and the poor, to seek justice and compassion, and to place our hope in God rather than in wealth or power. May her Assumption strengthen our faith and remind us that our journey ultimately leads us home to God.

FEAST | THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD

Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus is transfigured before Peter, John, and James as He prays and Moses and Elijah appear with Him, and the Father’s voice declares, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”

The Transfiguration reveals Christ’s divine identity and prepares the disciples for His Passion. It reminds us to listen to Jesus, to trust Him through both moments of joy and trials, and keep our hope fixed on what’s to come.

Let us also remember in our prayers those who are most vulnerable, our first responders, and everyone working tirelessly to keep our communities safe.

MEMORIAL | THE DEDICATION OF THE BASILICA OF ST. MARY MAJOR

Today, the Church commemorates the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, the oldest and largest church in the West of Rome dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Rebuilt by Pope Sixtus III after the Council of Ephesus proclaimed Mary as the Mother of God in 431, this sacred basilica stands as a witness to the Church’s deep love and devotion to Our Lady.

May her example inspire us to live with humility, trust in God’s plan, and faithful obedience each day, so that our hearts may truly become a dwelling place for Christ.

Our Lady of Snows, pray for us.
