TODAYโ€™s GMRC | Inside the Church, Chat with God, Not with your Textmates

Before Holy Mass begins, the church is not simply a waiting area; it is a meeting place with God.

Many of us arrive early, but instead of preparing our hearts, we immediately open our phones, check messages, scroll through updates, or chat with others. Yet the few quiet minutes before Mass are precious moments of grace.

Imagine this: the King of the universe is already present in the church, waiting for you. Before listening to God speak through His Word, why not first speak to Him from your heart?

Tell Him: โ€œLord, thank You.โ€ โ€œLord, I am tired.โ€ โ€œLord, help my family.โ€ โ€œLord, I offer You this day.โ€

A short prayer before Mass can transform the way we participate in the Eucharist. Sacred Scripture inspires us: โ€œBe still and know that I am Godโ€ (Psalm 46:10).

Before speaking to the world, speak first to God. Before checking your messages, check your heart. And before the Holy Mass begins, spend a few moments chatting with the One who loves you most.

HOMILY | Monday of the 6th Week of Easter
Gospel: John 15:26โ€“16:4a

In the Gospel, Jesus speaks about the Holy Spirit. He calls Him the Spirit of Truth.

That title is very meaningful for us today because we are living in a time when truth is often confused, distorted, and attacked. Many people no longer know whom to believe. Social media is full of noise, accusations, fake news, and disinformation. Lies spread quickly, while truth struggles to be heard.

And because of this, many hearts are becoming angry, divided, and confused.

That is why the words of Jesus today are very important: โ€œThe Spirit of Truth will guide you.โ€

The Holy Spirit is not the spirit of hatred. The Holy Spirit is not the spirit of blind fanaticism. The Holy Spirit is not the spirit of manipulation or deception. The Holy Spirit leads people toward truth, humility, wisdom, justice, and peace.

Today, I would like to speak in a special way to our lawmakers, especially those entrusted with making important decisions for our nation during this difficult time.

Dear members of Congress, your responsibility is very heavy. The decisions you make affect not only politics, but also the moral direction of our country. As you reflect on the impeachment issue before you, I humbly ask you: please pray deeply to the Holy Spirit.

Do not decide only according to political pressure. Do not decide only according to public popularity. Do not decide only according to personal ambition or fear.

Instead, ask: โ€œWhat is true?โ€
โ€œWhat is just?โ€ โ€œWhat is good for the Filipino people?โ€ โ€œWhat decision can I defend before God and before my conscience?โ€

Sometimes, the most difficult thing is not discovering the truth. The most difficult thing is remaining faithful to the truth when there is pressure all around us.

Remember: your vote is not only recorded in history. It is also seen by God.

And to all Filipinos, todayโ€™s Gospel is also a reminder for us.

We must pray more for our country. We must pray more for wisdom and discernment. We must be careful not to become instruments of lies, hatred, or division.

Not everything we read online is true. Not every loud voice speaks with wisdom. And not every viral message carries honesty.

Before we share information, let us verify. Before we judge, let us reflect. Before we speak harshly, let us pray first.

Because when truth disappears, trust also disappears. And when trust disappears, unity becomes difficult.

My dear brothers and sisters, our nation does not only need intelligent leaders. Our nation needs men and women guided by conscience and by the Holy Spirit.

So today, let us pray not only for our politicians, but for all Filipinos.

May the Holy Spirit enlighten our minds when we are confused. May He soften our hearts when we become angry. May He strengthen our conscience when we are tempted to choose convenience over truth.

And may the Spirit of Truth continue to guide our nation toward what is right, just, and pleasing to God.

Come, Holy Spirit. Guide our leaders.
Guide our people. Guide the Philippines.
Amen.

A Pastoral Guide for Lawmakers on the Question of Impeachment

Public service is not only a political duty; it is also a moral responsibility before God and the people. When a Catholic lawmaker is asked to vote on an impeachment process, the decision should never be treated lightly or reduced to mere political strategy, personal loyalty, or partisan interest. It is a serious matter that touches on truth, justice, accountability, and the common good.

A Catholic public servant must therefore approach such a decision with a prayerfully formed conscience.

The first question should not be: โ€œWill this help my political future?โ€ but rather: โ€œWhat is true, just, and beneficial for the nation?โ€ If there is sufficient basis or probable cause under the law, allowing the constitutional process to proceed does not automatically mean condemning a person as guilty. Rather, it may simply mean allowing the truth to be examined properly, fairly, and transparently.

At the same time, public officials must resist the temptation to act out of anger, blind loyalty, fear, pressure, or personal ambition. Decisions that affect the nation must be guided not by political convenience but by moral integrity.

That is why prayer is essential. A Catholic lawmaker must consult God sincerely and ask for the grace of wisdom, humility, and courage. Conscience is not merely personal opinion or emotion. In the Christian understanding, conscience must be formed by truth, prayer, moral principles, and honest discernment.

It is also good to seek counsel from wise and upright people: constitutional experts, persons of integrity, trusted spiritual advisers, and even the sentiments of constituents. Yet consultation should never mean surrendering oneโ€™s conscience to political patrons, pressure groups, or the emotions of the crowd. Leadership sometimes requires the courage to stand for what is right even when it is difficult or unpopular.

Sacred Scripture reminds us: "What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?โ€ (Mark 8:36)

In the end, every Catholic lawmaker must decide according to truth, justice, the Constitution, the common good, and a conscience formed before God.

For one day, every public servant will answer not only before the people or political parties, but before the Lord Himself, who sees the intentions of every heart.

May God guide all our leaders with wisdom, courage, humility, and love for the Filipino people.
