Jonah was a prophet whom God commanded to preach to the people of Nineveh so they could repent from their sins (Jonah 1:1โ2). Instead of obeying, Jonah ran away from God's calling and boarded a ship to Tarshish (Jonah 1:3). God sent a great storm, and Jonah was thrown into the sea, where a great fish swallowed him. He stayed there for three days and three nights and prayed to God in repentance (Jonah 1:17; 2:1โ2).
God gave Jonah a second chance, and this time he obeyed. He preached to Nineveh, and the people repented. Because of their sincere change of heart, God showed them mercy and spared the city (Jonah 3:5โ10). Although Jonah became upset that God forgave them, God reminded him that His compassion and mercy are for everyone, not just for those we think deserve it (Jonah 4:10โ11).
We can never run from God's purpose for our lives. Even when we fail, God offers us another chance if we sincerely repent. Just as God forgave Nineveh, we are also called to extend grace, compassion, and forgiveness to others.
