17 May | Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord
The Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, commemorating the moment when Jesus Christ ascended into heaven forty days after His Resurrection. Before ascending to the Father, Christ entrusted His disciples with the mission to proclaim the Gospel to all nations, promising that He would remain with His Church always. The Ascension marks not the absence of Christ, but His glorification and continued presence through the Church, the sacraments, and the Holy Spirit.
Traditionally, the Ascension is observed on the Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter, exactly forty days after Easter Sunday, reflecting the timeline recorded in Sacred Scripture (Acts 1:3). However, in many countriesโincluding the Philippines and several other episcopal conferences: the celebration is transferred to the following Sunday so that more of the faithful may participate fully in this important solemnity. This transfer was permitted by the Holy See for pastoral reasons, allowing the mystery of the Ascension to be celebrated more widely within the Sunday liturgy.
The Ascension reminds the faithful that Christ, seated at the right hand of the Father, continues to guide His Church and intercede for humanity. It also directs our hearts toward heaven, encouraging Christians to live with hope and to continue the mission entrusted by the Lord: to bear witness to the Gospel in every corner of the world.
As the Church celebrates this glorious mystery, the faithful await the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, remaining united in prayer with the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostles, just as the early Church did after the Lord ascended into heaven.
