May 19, 2026 — Feast of Nuestra Señora de Guia 🙏
Known as Our Lady of Guidance, Nuestra Señora de Guia holds a special and historic place in the heart of Filipino Catholic faith. She is recognized as the oldest existing Marian image in the Philippines — a silent witness to centuries of Christianity, devotion, struggles, and hope in our nation.
The sacred image was discovered by the Spaniards led by Miguel López de Legazpi in 1571 in what is now Ermita, Manila. According to historical accounts, the image was found in a native settlement and was already being venerated by the people. This beautiful detail reminds us that even before churches were formally established in the country, God was already preparing the Filipino people through the loving presence of the Blessed Mother.
In 1578, Nuestra Señora de Guia was proclaimed the “Sworn Patroness of Manila,” becoming a guiding light for both travelers and faithful devotees. True to her title, she continues to guide countless souls — especially those facing uncertainty, difficult decisions, and journeys far from home.
For many Filipinos today, devotion to Our Lady of Guidance has become deeply connected with prayer for safe travels, new opportunities, and protection abroad. Because the shrine stands near the US Embassy in Manila, many visa applicants come to seek her intercession, entrusting their dreams, anxieties, and future into her maternal care. Over the years, countless devotees have shared testimonies of answered prayers and unexpected blessings through her intercession.
She is also lovingly honored as the patroness of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). In every Filipino leaving home to work in another country, we see the silent sacrifices made out of love for family. Through the guidance of the Blessed Mother, many find strength amid loneliness, protection amid danger, and hope amid homesickness. She reminds every OFW that no distance can separate them from God’s love and a mother’s prayers.
The Canonical Coronation of the image on December 30, 1955, led by Archbishop Egidio Vagnozzi, affirmed the deep devotion of the Filipino people to Our Lady. Yet beyond titles, honors, and history, the true beauty of Nuestra Señora de Guia lies in her enduring message:
Mary always leads us to Jesus.
In a world filled with confusion, fear, and uncertainty, may Our Lady of Guidance continue to lead our nation, our families, and our hearts closer to Christ. May she guide the youth searching for direction, comfort those carrying burdens, and protect every Filipino wherever they may be in the world.
Nuestra Señora de Guia, guide us always and pray for us. ✨
