NO NEED FOR GOOD WORKS? JUST FAITH ALONE? (EPHESIANS 2:8-9)

One of the Bible passages most commonly quoted by non-Catholics as saying that we are saved by Faith Alone is Ephesians 2:8–9.

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."(Ephesians 2:8-10).

Notice the verb that was used in verse 8, “For it is by grace you have been saved”…. is in the past participle. If you are going to read the whole chapter of Ephesians chapter 2 then you would really understand the truth, that this is referring to the first coming of Christ. The Ephesians 2:8 is talking about crucifixion of Jesus on the cross. "Destroying in his own flesh the wall - the hatred - which separated us. He abolished the Law with its commands and precepts. He made peace in uniting the two peoples in him, creating out of the two one New Man. He destroyed hatred and reconciled us both to God through the cross, making the two one body."(Ephesians 2:15-16) The people cannot save themselves just by obeying the law (see: Galatians 2:11-16) so the Lord Jesus Christ had to die on the cross so that the gentiles will be brought closer to God. (Ephesians 2: 11-16).

ARE GOOD WORKS NOT NECESSARY FOR SALVATION?

Here’s the executive summary:
- Ephesians 2:8 doesn’t say anything about faith alone.
- Ephesians 2:9 does not mean that good works aren’t required.

Clearly good works are required, because according to Ephesians 2:10, that’s what we’re created for.
Ephesians 2:8-10 has been called the most concise summary of Pauline Theology in the New Testament terms such as "gift," "faith," "works," and "boast"are central to St. Paul's , message. The opposition between faith and works is especially well known. However, in comparing this text to St. Paul's one of the dichotomy in earlier works can detect a significant difference. In Galatians 2:11-16, this language is linked to St. Paul's struggle to ensure that Gentiles can enter the Church without adopting the "WORKS OF THE LAW" that traditionally separated Jew from Gentile such as male circumcision and food laws.

We must remember that Apostle Paul will not contradict his own writings since it was he who wrote Ephesians 2:8-10.
Also, according to Apostle Paul:
" I do not claim that I have already succeeded or have already become perfect. I keep striving to win the prize for which Christ Jesus has already won me to himself."(Philippians 3:12)
Since he can still be scorned if he does not persevere and loyal till the very end.

"I harden my body with blows and bring it under complete control, to keep myself from being disqualified after having called others to the contest."(1 Corinthians 9:27)
What did Jesus say?
"But whoever holds out to the end will be saved."(Mark 13:13)

IS FAITH ALONE ENOUGH?

"Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples;"(John 8:31)
This proves "Faith Alone" is not enough!
If Christ taught "Faith Alone", why does He need to give Jews conditions to abide by His words when they already believed in Him?

If "Faith Alone" suffices, why do you need more?

Apostle Peter said that it is necessary to add since faith alone is not enough.
"Because of this, make every effort to add integrity to your faith; and to integrity add knowledge; to knowledge add self-control; to self-control add endurance; to endurance add godliness; to godliness add Christian affection; and to Christian affection add love. If you have these qualities and they are increasing, it demonstrates that your knowledge about our Lord Jesus Christ is living and productive."(2 Peter 1:5-8)

If "Faith Alone" is enough, why do we need "Hope" and “Love"?

If "Faith" suffices, why is love greater than faith?

"So these three things remain: faith, hope, and love. But the best one of these is love."(1 Corinthians 13:13)

HOW WILL GOD JUDGE US ON JUDGMENT DAY?

This is what Christ said:

"When the Son of Man comes as King and all the angels with him, he will sit on his royal throne, and the people of all the nations will be gathered before him. Then he will divide them into two groups, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the righteous people at his right and the others at his left. Then the King will say to the people on his right, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father! Come and possess the kingdom which has been prepared for you ever since the creation of the world. I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me a drink; I was a stranger and you received me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me.’ The righteous will then answer him, ‘When, Lord, did we ever see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink? When did we ever see you a stranger and welcome you in our homes, or naked and clothe you? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these followers of mine, you did it for me!’"(Matthew 25:31-40)

The question is: How will those who inherit the Kingdom of God be saved? Feeding the hungry, giving water to the thirsty, giving clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and helping those who are homeless are all good works.

DID YOU KNOW?

THE CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF ORLANDO, FLORIDA INCLUDES THE MOON

It might sound strange, but in addition to encompassing nine counties and hundreds of cities, the Diocese of Orlando, Florida also has jurisdiction over an otherworldly object: the Moon. Why might you ask? The answer involves an obscure rule from 1917 and the Apollo 11 space mission.

On June 18th, 1968 the Catholic Diocese of Orlando, Florida was established. It would encompass much of the greater central Florida area, along with Cape Canaveral (We’ll get back to that later). William Donald Borders was ordained the first Bishop of Orlando. One year later, Bishop Borders would also become the first Bishop of the Moon.

The Apollo 11 space mission began with the launch from Cape Canaveral on July 16, 1969. The mission fulfilled the national goal proposed by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 of “landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth, before this decade is out.” However, when Apollo 11 made its famous flight from Cape Canaveral to ultimately fulfill that goal, they inadvertently made Bishop Borders the first Bishop of the Moon thanks to an obscure rule from the 1917 Code of Canon Law in effect at the time.

In 1969 following the Apollo 11 launch, Bishop Borders made an ad limina visit to the Vatican for an audience with Pope Blessed Paul VI. During their meeting, Bishop Borders nonchalantly observed: “You know, Holy Father, I am the bishop of the Moon.” Paul VI was perplexed at his declaration, until Borders explained to Paul VI that under the 1917 Code of Canon law, he was the de facto ordinary of a “newly discovered territory.”

The obscure rule stated that any newly discovered territory falls under the bishopric where the discovering expedition had departed, or more aptly, launched. The Apollo 11 mission launched from Cape Canaveral, which is under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Orlando, thus installing Borders as the first Bishop of the Moon.

If Borders claim was true, his diocese would encompass over fourteen and half million square miles. Father John Giel, chancellor for Canonical Affairs for the Diocese of Orlando, says that ultimately jurisdiction in the Code of Canon Law “means nothing if there is no one to have jurisdiction over.”

“Since we have yet to find any life on the moon. The story only emphasizes Bishop Border’s good and humorous nature that allowed him to be such a good first bishop for central Florida.”

👉 Nganong wala niya nakita ang mga Iglesia ni Cristo, Saksi ni Jehovah, sa impyerno? Dapat nakita niya tanang mga relihiyon ug sekta nga wala nagsimba ni Ginoong JesuCristo!
