When Trauma Hits: How We Can Minister to Someone Experiencing Trauma

This is an example of how we can respond when a person has experienced deep trauma, especially from abuse.

When trauma hits, the person may feel overwhelmed, afraid, or unsafe. Our first response should be to help them feel safe, calm, and supported.

1. Reassure the person that they are safe.
Say something simple like:

“I’m here with you. You’re not alone. You are safe right now.”

Avoid pressuring them to explain everything immediately. Your calm presence can already communicate safety.

2. Encourage slow and gentle breathing.
You can calmly say:

“Let’s take a slow breath together.”

Gentle breathing can help the person slow down and become more aware of the present moment. Don't force them to breathe in a particular way if it makes them uncomfortable.

3. The power of comforting presence.
For someone who is close to you such as your child, friend, or relative a comforting embrace may help them feel supported if they are comfortable with physical touch.

If you are not someone they are close to, don't assume that a hug is appropriate. Give them space and ask permission before any physical contact. When appropriate, having a trusted same-gender adult, older person, parent, guardian, or other safe support person present may provide additional comfort.

The goal is not to immediately fix the trauma.
The goal is to communicate:

“You are safe. You are not alone. I am here with you.”

Sometimes, a safe presence is the first step toward healing.

Forgiveness should never be used to silence someone who is hurting. Submission should never mean tolerating abuse. And protecting the church should never come at the expense of protecting the wounded.

Youth Connect Stand

We believe that when someone is hurting, we should not simply ask, “Ano ang religious advice?”

We should ask:

Who is the right person to help?

A trusted person.
A safe community.
A qualified professional counselor or mental health professional who can provide ethical, practical, and Christ-centered care when appropriate.

Our churches, homes, and schools should become safe spaces for the broken.

Never silence the unspoken hurt.

Be the safe space. ❤️

And especially for pastors and leaders: stay teachable.

The world is changing. The challenges faced by Gen Z and Gen Alpha are different, and some approaches used in the past may need to be revisited, improved, or complemented by professional knowledge.

Our approach may change, but our foundation remains Christ.

We can continue to be grounded in Christ while being open to new learning, evidence, professional standards, and better ways of caring for people.

Because being Christ-centered does not mean we stop learning.

We grow. We listen. We learn. We care.

And above all, we make sure that the wounded do not have to suffer in silence.

YCM X Paglago.
45 to 50 students join today and we talk about the importance of sound mind in the world today that offers too many options.

By having the right standards and values, we can live a meaningful life when our lives are aligned with the Only Truth—Christ Alone.
