GOD IS ONE
A. THERE IS ONLY ONE TRUE GOD
Scriptural References:
Deuteronomy 6:4 "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord"
Isaiah 44:6 "I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God... is there any God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any"
Isaiah 45:5 "I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me"
James 2:19 "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble."
1 Timothy 2:5 "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
There are over fifty passages of Scripture that teach that God is one, and that there is no other. No other truth of Scripture receives more prominence than that God is one God. A multiplication of gods is a contradiction; there can be but one Supreme Being, one God. Such a Being cannot be multiplied or pluralized. There can be but one, ultimate, all-inclusive God.
The Oneness of God was the special truth that was committed to Israel to preserve among the nations of the earth. This was the great revelation of Himself that God gave to Abraham and which was passed down to the entire nation of Israel as a sacred trust. The Oneness of God is the great truth and message of the Old Testament. The Jews sought to stone Jesus because He claimed to Deity and said, "For a work they stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God" (John 10:33). The truth taught in the Old Testament is never contradicted in the New Testament, but rather fulfilled.
B. THE ONENESS OF GOD IS A NUMERICAL ONENESS
Scriptural References:
Isaiah 43:3 "For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel,"
Lesson Two
thy Saviour*
Isaiah 43:11, 13...
The churches that hold to "Oneness" as related to the Godhead teach that if God is not one Person only, then He is not the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 43:11). This is incorrect, for God claims to have many personalities. In the New Testament, we have the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. These are not three gods, but one God. The Son is not the second person in a Trinity, but is the absolute personality of God manifest in the flesh. The Holy Spirit is the personality of God operating in the world today.
C. GOD KNOWS ALL THINGS
Scriptural References:
Isaiah 44:8 "Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any."
God possesses all knowledge. Nothing is hidden from Him. Nothing takes place that He does not know. God knows all things, past, present and future.
