Ouija Boards and the Danger of Seeking Contact With Spirits
Many people think a Ouija board is just a harmless game. Others try the Charlie Charlie Challenge, spirit-calling games, pendulums, automatic writing, ghost communication apps, or other practices that claim to contact unseen spirits. They may seem like entertainment or harmless curiosity, but from a Catholic perspective, they are not.
The First Commandment calls us to seek God alone. Any attempt to communicate with spirits apart from God can open us to spiritual deception. Evil spirits can imitate and deceive, making these practices spiritually dangerous.
Many exorcists have shared that seemingly innocent occult games, including Ouija boards, have sometimes been the beginning of serious spiritual problems for those who repeatedly engage in them.
The Church encourages us to avoid:
* Ouija boards
* The Charlie Charlie Challenge
* Spirit-calling games
* Séances
* Automatic writing
* Pendulums and dowsing
* Apps or games that claim to communicate with spirits
* Any occult practice that seeks hidden knowledge or supernatural power apart from God
If you have taken part in these practices, do not be afraid. God’s mercy is greater than any sin.
Instead:
1. Renounce the occult.
2. Make a good Confession.
3. Receive the Holy Eucharist frequently.
4. Pray daily, especially the Holy Rosary.
5. Remove and destroy occult objects.
6. If unusual spiritual disturbances continue, seek guidance from your parish priest.
Our goal is never to seek hidden spirits, but to seek Jesus Christ, who is “the way, the truth, and the life”. True peace and protection are found through prayer, the sacraments, and a life of grace.
A note for parents: Many children today are exposed to occult games online or through friends. Talk to them about why the Church teaches us to avoid these practices and encourage them to seek God alone.
