Catherine, a virgin from Siena born to devout parents, received the Dominican habit worn by the Sisters of Penance. She practiced strict abstinence and lived a life of remarkable austerity. While staying in Pisa on a Sunday, she received the Eucharist and fell into an ecstasy. She saw the crucified Lord approaching in a great light, with five rays descending from His wounds toward the same locations on her own body. Understanding this mystery, she prayed that the wounds would remain invisible. The color of the rays immediately changed from blood-red to a brilliant, pure light that touched her hands, feet, and heart. Even though no blood was visible, her pain was so intense that she believed she would have died if God had not lessened it. Her knowledge was divinely inspired rather than learned. She traveled to Pope Gregory XI in Avignon and revealed that she knew, through divine revelation, of his secret vow to return to Romeโ€”a vow known only to God. Because of her, the Pope returned to occupy his See in Rome. Around the age of thirty-three, she passed away to meet her Bridegroom, and Pope Pius II canonized her among the holy virgins.

Grant, we beseech thee, O Almighty God, that we which do keep the birthday of thy blessed Virgin Katharine, and do year by year renew her memorial with solemn gladness in thy presence, may likewise be conformed to the pattern of her saintly walk with thee.

St. Paul of the Cross was born in Ovada, Liguria. As soon as he reached the age of reason, he was filled with an intense love for the crucified Jesus Christ. Driven by a desire for martyrdom, he joined the army being formed in Venice to fight the Turks. However, once Godโ€™s will was revealed to him, he refused both an honorable marriage and an inheritance from his uncle. He received a coarse tunic as a religious habit from his bishop and, though not yet a priest, served the Lord by preaching His word. In Rome, out of obedience to Pope Benedict XIII, he was ordained a priest. He then withdrew to the solitude of Monte Argentario, where the Blessed Virgin had previously invited him to go. She had also shown him a black habit decorated with the symbols of her Son's Passion. There, he founded a new religious congregation whose members vow to promote the memory of the Lord's Passion; he also established a congregation for nuns to meditate continually on this mystery. Renowned for his preaching, virtues, and spiritual gifts, he died in Rome in 1775. Pope Pius IX beatified him and later enrolled him among the saints.

Lord Jesus Christ, Who didst gift thine holy servant Paul with great love that he might preach the mystery of thy cross, and hast been pleased that through him a new family should grow up in thy Church, grant unto us at his prayers that upon earth we may so call thy sufferings to mind as worthily to gain the fruit thereof in heaven.

Soter, who was from Fondi in Campania, succeeded the holy martyr Anicetus. He established the rule that nuns were not permitted to touch the sacred vessels or altar linens, nor were they to handle incense during Church services. He also decreed that everyone should receive Holy Communion on Holy Thursday, with the exception of those barred due to serious sin. He was martyred during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and was buried in the cemetery that later became known as the Catacombs of St. Callixtus.

Caius was a Dalmatian and a relative of Emperor Diocletian. He established the specific hierarchy of Church offices that a person must hold before being ordained a bishop: first, Porter; second, Reader; third, Exorcist; fourth, Acolyte; fifth, Subdeacon; sixth, Deacon; and seventh, Priest. To escape Diocletianโ€™s persecutions of Christians, Caius hid in a cave for a time. However, after eight years, both he and his brother Gabinus were martyred. He was also buried in the Cemetery of Callistus.

King Hermenegild, son of the Visigoth King Leovigild, converted from the A***n heresy to the Catholic faith through the preaching of Leander, the Bishop of Seville, who is also one of my closest friends. His father, an A***n, first tried to bribe him with promises and then tried to intimidate him with threats to get him to return to his former beliefs. However, when Hermenegild insisted that he could never abandon the true faith now that he had found it, his father became enraged. He stripped him of his kingdom and all his possessions, then locked him away under heavy guard with his neck and hands in chains.

In prison, the young King Hermenegild began to lose interest in earthly power and instead focused on reaching the kingdom of heaven. Lying there bound and dressed in sackcloth, he prayed to Almighty God for strength.

When Easter arrived, his father deceptively sent an A***n bishop to him in the middle of the night. The plan was for Hermenegild to receive an A***n-consecrated Communion from the bishop to regain his fatherโ€™s favor. But, as a man devoted to God, Hermenegild gave the bishop the rebuke he deserved and indignantly refused the offer. When the bishop returned with the news, Hermenegild's father was so furious that he immediately sent servants to kill him. They murdered him right there in his prison cell as he stood firm in his faith.

At that time, the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and she saw the stone taken away from the tomb. She ran therefore and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and they went to the tomb. The two were running together, and the other disciple ran on before, faster than Peter, and came first to the tomb. And stooping down he saw the linen cloths lying there, yet he did not enter. Simon Peter therefore came following him, and he went into the tomb, and saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief which had been about his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded in a place by itself. Then the other disciple also went in, who had come first to the tomb. And he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.

Dearly beloved brothers and sisters, the passage of the Holy Gospel that has just been read to you is very simple on the surface, which is its historical meaning; but the mystical meaning, which lies beneath, requires us to search a little deeper. Mary Magdalene came to the tomb while it was still dark. The historical sense tells us the time of day; the mystical sense tells us the state of understanding of the one who was searching. Mary Magdalene sought Him by whom all things were made, and whom she had seen die in the flesh; she sought Him, I say, in the grave, and when she did not find Him, she believed He had been stolen. Yes, it was still dark when she came to the tomb. Then she ran and told the disciples, but those who had loved Him mostโ€”namely Peter and Johnโ€”outran the others.

So they both ran together, but John outran Peter and reached the tomb first, yet he did not take it upon himself to go in first. Then Peter came following him and went in. What, my brothers and sisters, did the racing of these Apostles signify? Can we believe that the description given by the deepest of the Evangelists is without a mystical interpretation? Not at all. John would never have told how he outran Peter and yet did not enter the tomb if he did not believe that his hesitation veiled some mystery. What does John signify but the Synagogue? Or Peter, but the Church?

You should not find it strange that the older Apostle represents the Church and the younger represents the Synagogue; for although the Synagogue was the first to worship God, the multitude of Gentiles in the world is older than the Synagogue, as Paul witnesses when he says: "The spiritual was not first, but the natural." By Peter, then, who was the elder, is signified the Church of the Gentiles; and by John, who was the younger, the Synagogue of the Jews. They both run together, for from the time of her birth until nowโ€”and so it will be until the endโ€”the Church of the Gentiles has run a parallel and in many ways a common road with the Synagogue, though not with equal understanding. The Synagogue came first to the tomb, but she has not yet entered in; for, though she has received the commandments of the law and has heard the Prophets speak of the Incarnation and Passion of the Lord, she will not believe in Him who died for her.
