Today, with all gladness, the church commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the birth of the Catholic Church in 33 A.D. According to the New Testament account in the Acts of the Apostles, this event took place fifty days after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, during the Jewish feast of Pentecost, when many people from different nations were gathered in Jerusalem.
On that day in Jerusalem, the apostles, along with the Blessed Virgin Mary, were gathered in prayer when a mighty wind filled the house, and tongues of fire appeared over them, signifying the presence of the Holy Spirit. They were filled with divine power and began to speak in different languages, enabling them to proclaim the Gospel to all nations. This moment marked the beginning of the Catholic Churchโs mission, when the apostles were transformed from fearful followers into bold missionaries of Christ.
Pentecost is called the โbirthday of the Churchโ (33 A.D.) because it marks the moment when the Church officially began its public life and mission in the world (with Jesus Christ as the founder). Through the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, Jesusโ promise was fulfilled, guiding, strengthening, and sanctifying the apostles as they began to baptize, teach, and spread the Christian faith from Jerusalem to the entire world.
