In a world that often equates happiness with wealth, success, and comfort, Jesus reminds us through the Beatitudes that true joy is found in humility, mercy, and love. It is not about having moreโitโs about being more.
One time, I was scrolling through my Facebook account and I saw a video of an old man crying while approaching the priest at the altar during the Holy Mass because he had learned that his 20-year-old grandson had died earlier. The priest then paused for a while and comforted the man. For me, it was a manifestation of Godโs loveโ a comfort that a man needs as he mourns the loss of his grandson. It is not just an expression of natural love but a Divine love felt in the moment of suffering.
Sometimes, we take things for granted, and we donโt realize that there are many people in need of what we have. We forget how to be grateful, and we keep on asking for more. But the Beatitudes of Jesus tell us that it is not about having more, but about having a heart that trusts and depends on God. To be poor in spirit is to recognize our need for God. To be merciful is to reflect His compassion. To be a peacemaker is to bring heavenโs harmony into our broken world. These arenโt just idealsโtheyโre invitations to live differently, to live deeply.
Today, let us choose to embody the Beatitudes. Letโs be gentle in our strength, hopeful in our trials, and generous in our love. Because when we do, we not only draw closer to heavenโwe make heaven visible here on earth.
