Dedication of the Lateran Basilica (c.324)

— The apse of the Lateran Basilica in Rome.

The Lateran Basilica was built by the Emperor Constantine on the Lateran Hill in Rome in about 324. The feast of its dedication has been celebrated in Rome on this date since the twelfth century. In honour of the basilica, “the mother and head of all the churches of the City and the World,” the feast has been extended to the whole Roman Rite as a sign of unity and love towards the See of Peter, which, as St Ignatius of Antioch said in the second century, “presides over the whole assembly of charity.”

"Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders"

-From the song "Oceans"

Gospel
John 6:51–58
My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.

Jesus said to the Jewish crowds: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”
The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

St Antony of Padua (1195? - 1231)

— Apparition of the Child Jesus to Saint Anthony of Padua by Francisco de Zurbarán (1598-1664), oil on canvas, circa 1630. São Paulo Museum of Art Collection.

Saint Antony was first of all an Augustinian monk, but he was so impressed by the martyrdom of five Franciscans who had been spreading the faith in Morocco that he became a Franciscan friar himself, so that he could preach the gospel in Africa too. Illness obliged him to leave Morocco, and a storm then drove his ship to Sicily, so that he found himself taking part in the General Chapter of the Franciscans in 1221, where he met Saint Francis of Assisi himself. His preaching career then took him to northern Italy and southern France, then a stronghold of the Albigensian heresy. Later he returned to Italy, to Padua, where he was an outstanding preacher and the first Franciscan theologian. His sermons are full of gentleness, but he reproved the wicked with fearless severity – especially backsliding clergy and the oppressors of the weak.
His shrine is a centre of pilgrimage, and he is also the patron saint of the lost and found.

Prayers and intercessions

Let us adore Christ, who offered himself to the Father through the Holy Spirit to cleanse us from the works of death. Let us adore him and call upon him with sincere hearts:
– In your will is our peace, Lord.

From your generosity we have received the beginning of this day:
grant us also the beginning of new life.
– In your will is our peace, Lord.

You created all things, and now you provide for their growth:
may we always perceive your handiwork in creation.
– In your will is our peace, Lord.

With your own blood, you ratified the new and eternal covenant:
may we remain faithful to that covenant by following your precepts.
– In your will is our peace, Lord.

On the cross, blood and water flowed from your side:
may this saving stream wash away our sins and gladden the City of God.
– In your will is our peace, Lord.

Prayers and intercessions

Let us sing a song of praise to our Savior, who destroyed the power of death and made clear the path to life and immortality through the Gospel; and let us petition him in humble supplication:
– Strengthen your Church in faith and love.

You gave wonderful guidance to your Church through her holy and distinguished teachers,
may Christians rejoice always in the splendid legacy given to your Church.
– Strengthen your Church in faith and love.

When their holy pastors prayed to you, as Moses had done, you forgave the sins of the people,
through the intercession of these holy pastors continue to sanctify and purify your Church.
– Strengthen your Church in faith and love.

You anointed your holy ones in the midst of their brothers and called the Holy Spirit down upon them,
fill all the leaders of your people with the Holy Spirit.
– Strengthen your Church in faith and love.

You yourself are the sole possession of your holy pastors,
grant that those you have redeemed with your blood may remain always in you.
– Strengthen your Church in faith and love.

St Barnabas the Apostle

— St Barnabas healing the sick by Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) circa 1566. Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen.

Saint Barnabas was born in Cyprus. He was one of the early converts in Jerusalem and vouched for St Paul when he appeared before the elders there. He accompanied Paul on his first missionary journey and later went to Cyprus with his cousin John Mark (Mark the evangelist) to preach the gospel there. He was probably martyred at Salamis in Cyprus, some time before the year 61.
