Jesus is depicted genuflecting under the weight of the Cross that bore during his Passion. The Black Nazarene arrived in Manila on May 31, 1606. The statue was initially brought to the first Recollect Church in what is now the Rizal Park (Luneta Park). In 1608, it was transferred to abigger church dedicated to San Nicolas de Tolentino in Intramuros. Then, it was transferred in 1787 by then Archbishop of Manila, Basilio Sancho de Santa Junta y Rufina, to the church in Quiapo - the name Black Nazarene of Quiapo. In Quiapo church, the image survived the great fires that destroyed the Quiapo church in 1791 and 1929. It also withstood the great earthquakes of 1645 and 1863 and the destructive bombing of Manila in 1945 during World War II.

Feast of Holy Rosary

The Feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary is celebrated on October 7th. According to historical accounts, this feast originated from a naval victory at Lepanto in 1571, where European Christendom defeated the Turkish invasion. Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, leading to the celebration of the Feast of “Our Lady of Victory”.

Over time, the feast was extended to the universal Church by Pope Clement XI in 1716, and later fixed on October 7th by Saint Pius X in 1913. The development of the rosary as a devotional practice has a long history, dating back to the imitation of the 150 Psalms with 150 Our Fathers.

What is Holy Rosary?
The Rosary is a Scripture-based prayer. It begins with the Apostles' Creed, which summarizes the great mysteries of the Catholic faith. The Our Father, which introduces each mystery, is from the Gospels. The first part of the Hail Mary is the angel's words announcing Christ's birth and Elizabeth's greeting to Mary.

What is the purpose of the mystery of the Rosary?
The mysteries of the Rosary invite us to reflect on many profound moments in the lives of Jesus and Mary. If we approach the mysteries with open minds and hearts, we can discover beautiful insights and applications in our own lives.

The Catholic church celebrates the Feast of the Archangels – Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. The word “angel,” or angelos in Greek, means “messenger.” Angels are therefore messengers of God, sent by Him to help us on the path to salvation. In this case, we could say that the archangels are like super-messengers of God, who are entrusted with particularly important missions. Notice that each of their names ends in “el,” a Hebrew ending referring to “God.” Michael – or Mikha’el in Hebrew – means “Who is like God?” Raphael means “God heals,” and Gabriel – Gabri’el in Hebrew – means “God is my strength.”

St Andrew of Crete (650-740)
Bishop

“Today the Virgin is born,
tended and formed
and prepared for her role as Mother of God,
who is the universal King of the ages.
… Therefore, let all creation sing and dance
and unite to make worthy contribution
to the celebration of this day.
… Let everything, mundane things
and those above, join in festive celebration.
Today this created world is raised
to the dignity of a holy place
for Him who made all things.
The creature is newly prepared
to be a divine dwelling place for the Creator.”

This feast originated in Jerusalem before the fifth century as the “Falling-Asleep of the Mother of God.” It was adopted in Rome in the mid-seventh century and was renamed the “Assumption” in the next century. It celebrates Mary’s passing over, body and soul, from this world into the glory of her risen Son.

The transfiguration is a preview of the future, when the Son of Man will come in glory to consummate his kingdom. But this future kingdom can only come through his death and resurrection, which is why Jesus warns the three disciples to “tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead”
