The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant
1. God’s Mercy Is Great and Undeserved
• The first servant’s debt was impossible to repay.
• This pictures our sin debt before God—far beyond what we can repay on our own.
• God, in His mercy, forgives us freely when we repent.
“Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.” (v.27)
⸻
2. Forgiven People Must Forgive Others
• The forgiven servant refused to forgive a much smaller debt.
• This shows how inconsistent and ungrateful it is to receive mercy but refuse to give it.
“Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?” (v.33)
⸻
3. Unforgiveness Has Serious Consequences
• The servant lost the mercy he had received.
• Unforgiveness leads to bo***ge, bitterness, and discipline.
“So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.” (v.35)
⸻
4. Forgiveness Must Come from the Heart
• God is not looking for outward forgiveness only, but genuine, heartfelt forgiveness.
• True forgiveness reflects a heart changed by grace.
⸻
Practical Applications
• Remember how much God has forgiven you.
• Choose forgiveness even when it is hard.
• Release anger, resentment, and the desire for revenge.
• Forgive not because others deserve it, but because God has forgiven you.
