DECEMBER 29 IS THE FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY

O BELOVED HOLY CHILD JESUS, Who by Your surpassing virtues and the example of Your home life hallowed the household in which You choose to live while on earth, mercifully look down upon this family, whose members, humbly prostrate before You, implore Your protection. Remember that we are bound and consecrated to You by a special devotion. Protect us in Your mercy, deliver us from danger, help us in our necessities, and impart to us strength to persevere always in the imitation of Your Holy Family, so that, by serving You and loving You faithfully during this mortal life, we may at length give You eternal praise in heaven.

IMMACULATE VIRGIN MARY, we implore Your assistance, knowing that Your divine Son will hearken to Your petition. Keep us always in the mantle of your maternal Love and protection.

BLESSED PATRIARCH, ST. JOSEPH, help us with Your powerful patronage, and place our petitions in Mary's hands, that she may offer them to our Lord JESUS CHRIST! Amen.

HAVE A BLESSED WEEKEND WITH THE HOLY FAMILY!

At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
~Lk 1:39-45

Our current Gospel imparts two lessons to us:

1) The first person to recognize Jesus as a person was an UNBORN CHILD. May this remind us, teach us to celebrate all life, for every single life is truly a precious gift from God. May we all be responsible stewards of such gift.

"Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being." (CCC 2258)

2) In order to see and feel the presence of God in our lives, we must become like children. May we never forget the child in us.

"And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them 3 and said, 'Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.'" (Matthew 18:2-4)

We are about to enter the season of Advent. And one of the most popular symbols used during this season the Advent wreath. The Advent wreath is a symbol of the season, with a candle lit each of the four Sundays leading up to, and on Christmas Day. The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent, and one candle is lit each Sunday. Three of the candles are purple because the color violet is a liturgical color that signifies a time of prayer, penance, and sacrifice.

• FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT—HOPE
The first candle, which is purple, symbolizes hope. It is sometimes called the “Prophecy Candle” in remembrance of the prophets, especially Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. It represents the expectation felt in anticipation of the coming Messiah.

• SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT—PEACE
The second candle, also purple, represents Peace. It is called the “Bethlehem Candle” as a reminder of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem.

• THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT—JOY

The third candle is pink and symbolizes joy. It is called the “Shepherd’s Candle,” and is pink because rose is a liturgical color for joy. The third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday and is meant to remind us of the joy that the world experienced at the birth of Jesus, as well as the joy that the faithful have reached the midpoint of Advent.

• FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT—LOVE
On the fourth week of Advent, we light the final purple candle to mark the final week of prayer and penance as we wait for the birth of our Savior. This final candle, the “Angel’s Candle,” symbolizes Love. It reminds us that God is love.

•WHITE CANDLE

Sometimes a white candle is placed in the middle of the wreath; this is a beautiful modern adaptation. The white candle is lit on Christmas Eve. This candle is called the “Christ Candle” and represents the life of Christ. The color white is for purity—because Christ is our sinless, pure Savior.

Using an Advent Wreath is an excellent way to prepare your mind and heart for Christmas.

As we progress through the spiritual journey of Advent, the second Sunday traditionally symbolizes the virtue of Peace. The second purple candle that is lit on this day is known as the "Bethlehem Candle." Reflecting on the journey of Mary and St. Joseph to Bethlehem during the weeks leading up to the first Christmas is a good way to remain in a spirit of humble reflection and penance.
